Pours a tan head over a nice amber liquid. A thick film is all that remains of it. Good lace, though.
Smell is hops. Period.
Taste is hops with really light malt and a bit of alcohol as well.
A bit rough. Medium bodied, medium effervescence. Some warming. Decent but could use a bit of nose and more taste.

Very clear orange hue with bright white head. lots of citrus and grapefruit on the nose. little thinner in body than most ipas but very brisk and carbonated. almost refreshing thin biscuit malt presence up front followed by tropical fruit and ends with a very dry and clean bitterness. bitterness is nice and big. flavors are layered in an odd way but otherwise its pretty straightforward for an ipa except for the mouthfeel. some odd flavors of lemongrass and herbs if you dig for them. tries to be complex but falls slightly short and is arranged in an odd matter. thins out on the swallow. different though. worth a try would. be a good summer ipa.

A - pale yellow
S - hops, malts, floral notes
T - alright, not really hoppy enough for me, has a really strong chemical taste to it
M - biting but not in a good way
D - Not too smooth

O - I'd never buy this again, however if a friend offered I'd drink it.

A - Amber/orange body with a thin white head that slowly fades away.

S - Some pine, caramel sweetness. Pretty mellow, wish this had more of a head to open up the flavors.

T - The bottle says 203FY10, so it is within its freshness period. However, I am rather disappointed. Sweet bready malts up front followed by a mellow hop bite. I'm not disappointed that the hop profile is weak or that the malt flavor dominates, I just don't think this beer (maybe this batch) was well put together.

M - Creamy body with some carbonation. Probably the best feature of the beer.

D - I really wanted to like this beer. Maybe I just got a bad batch, but as far as American IPAs go, this one will have to take a back seat to some of the other offerings in the greater Boston area.

12 oz. bottle poured into a mug.

Appearance: Pours a clear copper color with minimal visible carbonation. Big fluffy slightly off-white head leaves nice lacing.

Smell: A bit of citrus/hops, but I can hardly smell anything in it.

Taste: Some grain-like malts, hoppy citrus flavor, a bit of alcohol burn at the finish, and the aftertaste is a bitter flavor on the tongue that's not all too nice.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied with light tingly carbonation. Mostly smooth, but a tad rough at the finish.

Drinkability: A bit more alcohol in the taste than I'd like, but it isn't so bad.

A bit of a disappointment from Flying Dog! I've never been in awe of their beers, but never had one this lame. I think it could be consumed OK together with some food, and I'm fine finishing off the six-pack, but not worth getting again.

A: amber/red color with medium lasting head.

S: very unremarkable didnt smell like anything besides a tiny bit of hops.

T: fruity hoppy with HUGE flavor, i could see how some would like this beer, but not really for me at all. Long lasting flavor which is seemingly fruity with lasting bitterness

M: Medium body with light carbonation

D: there is no way i could drink even a whole bottle of it. For some reason it does not work for me. I like most everything from flying dog, but this is my least favorite of the sampler

12oz, nice label

pours dramatically and settles looking rather average.. orange and clear with a slight distorted thickness. foam once was great and breaks apart into huge air craters leaving some wacky lacing. smells like old high-alpha hops.. citrusey with a musty funk in the back. taste is disappointing.. rather stale and bitter like tree bark. fresh, fruity hop flavor is a real contrast to what's going on here otherwise, and adds something positive to the party. mouthfeel is still weak, light, and lacking carbonation. bitterness overwhelms sip after sip and prevents true enjoyment. the ingredients seem to be here, simply handled by inexperienced craftsmen. like some of their other beers but this one is not a winner.

Rich honey orange pour with lasting offwhite head. Smell is sweet grassy, soapy hops, bordering on some spices. More pale ale like, I thought, than an IPA, but with notes of clove, some hops and sweetness. Not one of my favorite IPAs by far, but drinkable. Wouldn't really recommend.

Paid $1.49 for a single...

The beer pours a pure amber base with a small white head, good rentention but minimal lacing effects. The aroma was a decent mix of hops, one would expect this from any IPA though.

The taste just didn't do it for me in any way, after the beer relased down the throat the taste was a blast of alcohol, thus leaving that as an aftertaste. Before this aftertaste, the IPA works, but that's it. Mouthfeel is just average, a little rough in the mouth and it isn't highly drinkabile, I wouldn't drink another at all.

Final Thought: This was disappointing, after the first drink I took I wish I would have chosen the Anchor Liberty to review instead... Not a good beer!

12oz bottle poured into a 16oz pint glass

A - Light in color for an ipa - a pale amber/copper color. Nice carbonation. Thin head but excellent retention. No opaqueness.

S - Lots of hops, which makes sense for the style. Definitely already feeling some sweet heat on the nose, but not totally out of balance. Pleasant, and not overbearing, but also not remarkable.

T - There's just not a lot going on with this beer. Overall it's a competent IPA, the hop flavor you want is there and I don't feel like it's overhopped. But there's very little balance, and the aftertaste is too bitter and alcohol-laden for me.

In a world of so many great American IPAs, this is difficult to recommend. It's not terrible, but more than anything else it's just boring.

Pours a nice light copper color with decent foam. The hop aroma is pretty strong from the get go, spicey and piney and a little sweet.
The taste is pretty disappointing. The hops dominate the palate and offer woody and sulfuric tastes that definately excercise my tastebuds, but its just too astringent despite the sweet malt that comes out in the finish.
Just can't do it.

This beer pours out a slight head that falls into a light head with a good lacing. It has a slightly cloudy golden brown color to it. Smell is hoppy and a little muggy, but still ok-must have an old bottle. The taste is just hoppy and I can't taste any other flavors at all.

For some reason this poured with an enormous head on it (I didn't think i shook up the bottle at all). Very mild smelling for an IPA, smells lightly of hops, that's about it. Taste is pretty unpleasant. Has a sour flavor that taste like hops and melted plastic. This is the worst IPA I have ever had, and this is the 10th different one I have tried. There are many better IPAS out there, and I wouldn't waste your money on this one.

Sampled on 6-27-07

Pours a clear amber color, with a nice bubbly head and big-time lacing.

Smell is all piney hops, with a good bit of sweet malt.

Taste is sweet at first, and then uber-bitter. The flavor is a pleasant fruity earthy combination, and then wow. It's all washed away by one of the most intensely bitter beers I've ever had.

Mouthfeel could be better, quite thin given the big hop flavors.

Drinkability is poor, this beer is a shock to your system. Overall, this beer has good flavors, but is brutally unbalanced. Not recommended.

Broadway brewing used to brew this beer for the Flying Dog brewpub but now the Flying Dog is brewing & bottling themselves but the taste is the same.
Pours a four finger white head that fades to a thin layer leaving some lace. Clear amber color. Light carbonation and medium bodied. Grapefruit hop nose. Flavor is balanced then goes to grapefruit with the expected lingering bitter finish of an IPA. $1.67 for a 12oz bottle from Capital Convenience Concord, NH.

Poured into a Maudite snifter from a 12 oz bottle

A: Big head and a pretty lucid brown, with plenty of carbonation and good lacing down the glass.

S; There’s a little pine, almost a hint of citrus, but really nothing given away on the nose. Very little of the usual suspect IPA aromas

T: The taste follows very close to the nose, with very little taste and a bitter slap in the face on the end. It doesn’t morph much as it moves over the palate.

F: It feels sticky and resinous, and runs easily over the tongue.

O: Overall, the beer wasn’t terribly pleasant simply because there wasn’t much to it. The nose was fairly empty, the taste was bitter with very little backing complexity for balance, but the beer was very nice to look at. I would rather pour and look than drink it. Not drain-pour, but, for me, a bit of a waste of time.

12 oz. bottle,

A: Pours a light amber with a medium fizzy white head. Solid retention, some big spotty lace.

S: Booze and melon rind, smells like a light Double Dog.

T: As with the nose, booze and melon rind. Light astringent hoppy flavours. Some minor malt character.

M: Medium-bodied, frothy carbonation, boozy and astringent.

O: A mediocre IPA is what it is. Awkward and disjointed, the ethanol takes over, making this feel a lot more alcoholic than it actually is.

Pours orange with a small head.

Hops noticable in the nose along with some grain.

Medium body, very weak hops presence for an IPA. Usual citrus flavors with a bit of dryness and bitterness, but flavors are really subdued. Finishes with grapefruit flavors.

I'm not necessarily a hop-head, but I do appreciate a good IPA, this is not one. Glad I just got a single, won't be buying again.

Purchased from Great Spirits, Huntsville, AL.

Pours a deep orange-amber color with a thick foamy off-white head. Very nice presentation, knocked up another notch by the really neat label design on the bottle. Whatever you say about Flying Dog, at least they know how to design a label. Head dissipates slowly during the life of the beer.

Smell is actually vaguely unpleasant, with a strong hop presence (to-style for an IPA) mixed with a vaguely "off" fruit profile. Smells like two very different flavors trying to outdo each other, and neither able to give in to the other in the slightest. Doesn't seem to be very well balanced at all, but it does tend to grow on you a bit as you drink it.

Taste is much the same, very, very hoppy beer mixed with very, very fruity taste notes. Seems to be way off-balance, even for an IPA, and it leaves a fairly discouraging aftertaste that's even worse than the beer itself. It's not really terrible, but it doesn't leave me wanting more.

Mouthfeel is fairly decent -- this one has a nice foaminess that I expect from a good IPA, and the carbonation isn't overdone, but it's fairly watery otherwise. Goes down smoothly enough, but nothing that makes me overly excited.

Overall drinkability is a 2.5 for me, as I think this is a beer that I can drink (I don't exactly actively dislike it), but I really wish I could have something else instead. I'll make it through this six-pack okay, but I'm unlikely to ever buy it again. I'll be sticking to the Bridgeport in the future.

I was pretty disappointed in this one. Amber colored with medium carbonation. Biscuity malt smell. Are there hops in this? Taste...yes there are hops, and they are very, very bitter (and not in a good way). This tastes more like an amber that has been mixed with an IPA. Very funky taste to me. No depth to smell or taste. Just funky, bitter malt with strong, strong alcohol. No floral, pine, grass....nothing. Very flat taste. I'm glad I only got a single. Would not buy again.

The colour is deep amber, the liquid clear. The two finger head is pale warm beige and compact. Some lacing occurs.

The smell is a bit chemical with alcohol and hints of solvents. Toffee and some buttery notes. Brown bread and a fruity bitterness that gives a somewhat tired impression.

The taste got a solid clean bitterness. Some roasted notes, some dried exotic fruits, and sour hints of banana peels. Alcohol and solvents plus a dense sweetness. The aftertaste is bitter with some overripe exotic fruits and hints of leather and wheat flour. The finish is bitter.

The carbonation is medium to strong, the smell bubbles fresh. The liquid is semi-smooth and a bit sticky.

Too much off-flavours and an air of tiredness; I didn’t really like this one.

No opinions on the labels or childish names for Flying Dog beers...

So, I did a "face off" between Snake Dog and the easily available (around here) Summit India. Summit's IPA represents the "post- modern blast of hops" India made in the US that I'm used to and like. As someone used to a rush of hop bitter/citrus, the Snake Dog was not there -- even almost heavy on the tongue and "floral" at the end (more like a mild Special Bitter, but not). As an IPA, Snake Dog is mid-pack and only OK to me...

At first, this looks like it's going to be good. Healthy looking patchy white creamy head atop a solid amber coloured beer. Aroma was light, with faint grain and a touch of floral citrus hop smell. Get to the taste, and I'm sort of lost. The body is almost too weak, thin. A rawness hints to its level of hopping. There's little malt sweetness (dextrin, faint buttery maple), but there's a dominant hodgepodge of hop flavours that can't decide what it is; very herbal, hoppy and slightly bitter with a watery lemon flavour. No balance to this brew at all. The hops really try, but its bark is worse than its bite. Finish is leafy in feel with an odd floral/herbal leftover.

Great label, not so great beer. I expected something a bit more agressive, proving that looks are deceiving.
