This is okay at best. Alcohol dominates taste and smell to the point that it's difficult to discern more subtle flavors typical in a porter. As such, this beer is way overpriced and disappointing. But I imagine you could get hammered drinking a six pack. Will not be buying this one again.

Procured from a local Vons, while searching for a new stout to try. An IP is close enough.

L: Pours a little thin, but very dark. Charcoal black with amber edges. Lightly carbonated, only a half centimeter of head rose from a moderate pour, but the lacing is widely arched and elegant, and a cinnamon-tan ring lingers on the glass.

S: Mmm... faint roast coffee, milk chocolate, and caramel laced with tendrils of sour lemon and cherry that cling to the nose and linger, a little bit of floral character flaring-up on the finish along with the roast. Hoppy for a porter. Some may find the level of sourness off-putting. Personally, I like the sour (although most porters do fine with much less).

T: Yum. Roast (as it should be) is center stage throughout with the chocolate and caramel sweetening the middle, then pear, plum, lime and grapefruit pull it into a sour finish. It's rather tough to distinguish the fruity character of the hops with all that roast coffee. It almost makes it seem pointless to make such a hoppy porter at all, as most people may not notice, and those who do may even find it conflicting. But I digress.

F: Feels as thin as it looks, but it's clean and has a refreshing level of dryness, so B+.

O: A very good porter. Complex, and though not as well-balanced as some, its heart is in the right place.

* This review is based off the nitro draught version
L - Deep black with a foamy, creamy light tan head with a good amount of lacing- obviously the nitro helps a lot with the look of this beer
S- very earthy, with deep malt and oak aromas but the smell isn't overpowering
T - Bold. Very earthy with a lot of hop flavor. A good amount of malt. There's also a nice bittersweet chocolate flavor in the mid palate. Maybe a slight amount of coffee flavor. Oak is present throughout the taste and adds a nice complexity. Some notes of alcohol but nothing unpleseant.
F - Perfect but again this is most likely due to the nitro. Fully body with minimal carbonation but incredibly smooth and creamy
O - This is an incredible imperial porter. Nice and bold with a strong earth and hop profile with a nice amount of malt and bittersweet chocolate to balance out the earth/hop bitterness. Obviously the nitro contributed a nice amount of depth to the overall feel and look of the beer.
- Of Note, I've had the non-nitro version of this beer and overall I'd rate it similarly - maybe 0.25 lower on the look and feel of the beer in each category respectively, but overall each version is a very, very good porter.

Bottle to snifter.

LOOK: dark black, beige head. Above average head, but fades to lacing.

AROMA: barley like a dry stout; hops, oak, pine. Bit of a clash.

TASTE: bitter malt, acidic coffee, almost a touch of vinegar. Touch of molasses and chocolate.

FEEL: bubbly, dry,

Doesn't really do it for me.

Comparison of 4 porters: 1. Kane Morning Bell; 2. Ballast Point Victory at Sea; 3. Evil Twin Lil B; 4. Flying Dog Gonzo.
