A-black with a big tan head. I didn't realize this would be a black IPA!

S-very faint scent of spices and hops. Not much here.

T-comes in with a surprisingly bitter flavor of herbs and pumpernickel. Of course I would never pick up pumpernickel if not for the name. If this was a blind tasting, I would've never guessed this to be so black. After-taste of hop resins and herbs.

M-creamy light carbonation with a dry finish

O-it's an okay beer, an okay IPA. I really don't recommend this at all. It's a fun thought to brew a beer based on pumpernickel, and I don't know what I expected but this was just bland overall. Not terrible, but there's always something better to order

Pours a very dark brown color. There is an off white mocha foam. Smells hoppy and bready, but little indication of pumpernickel. In the taste, very doughy and bready as well as bitter. Notes of chocolate and dough are apparent in the taste. Mild bitter from the hops with notes of graefruit, and the doughy flavor from the pumpernickel is quite nice. Medium bodied feel with roasted malt, sweet dough and hop flavor holding on to the finish. Overall, this an enjoyable beer, try it if you see it.

The beer comes quite dark, black, but with a bit of light coming through in the light.

The aroma has herbal, earthy, spicy character. Not a big aroma on this.

The flavor has a bit of spice, rye, a good amount chocolate with the malt, and then it ends with a herbal, woody bitterness.

It’s nice to see a beer that isn’t trying to just be an IPA that is black in color. It has a good rye character along with more earthy hop tons to get that pumpernickel theme going instead of citrus hops.

A good example of the style.

I had this on tap at McGrath's served chilled in a standard pint.

The color is black without any light escaping and sandstone head with fine bead. The smell is slightly peppery with some dark grain in the nose and mild sweetness with gentle fruity yeast ester. The feel is very nicely balanced with some mild sweetness and nice amount of bitterness with a semi-dry finish.

I like the slight bready taste fromthe dark malt with a gentle toasted and mild caramel which leads to the hop flavor which has a slight citrus edge with some good yeast flavor rounding out the tasted with mild alcohol. I was pleased to be able to try this and it is a pretty decent example of the style.

Poured from a 32 oz. growler filled last night into a NB snifter.

A - Big two-and-a-half finger head sets up right on the pour. Head is khaki brown and made of loose bubbles that dissipate quickly, leaving a thing ring of lace around the glass and little islands of big bubbles on the the surface. Held to a full-spectrum light, beer is black, with hints of dark chocolate brown at the very bottom edge of the glass. It's solidly opaque.

S - The nose is all about the hops. Piney resin punches in first followed by grapefruit-citrus, which takes over and dominates. As it warms in the glass, dark, moist (but not coffee roasted) malts start to appear in the nose. Approaching room temp, chocolate nibs appear and the hops turn the volume down a tad.

T - At first, dark, dense bread with touches of 50% chocolate, or a chocolate biscuit-cookie. Taste flips to the hops on the back end and finish, where the grapefruit alternates with a rustic, woody bitterness and a touch of tar/resin. Late in the finish, the hops give way to caraway and light rye, and finally, a touch of milk chocolate. No hint of alcohol; ABV is well-hidden.

M - Light carbonation to start, but predominately smooth and creamy. Gets a little chewy as it warms. Medium-light body. Hops and malts stand apart rather than being integrated. Finish lingers from the hops and echos for awhile.

O - This tastes to me like a slightly chocolate-based porter that's been dry-hopped. Beer is definitely hop-forward, which isn't the style I reach for when I'm not exploring. The most interesting part for me in tasting this is actually in the finish, where the malts that give it its name turn up when the hops finally fade - that's where the two sides of the beer finally seem to come together. I think this would pair well with something like mole enchiladas.

C'mon Flying Dog!? With clever and sometimes adolescent brand names, you suddenly lack imagination with this opportunistic ale? You have Doggie Style, UnderDog, In-Heat, and Pearl Necklace; yet here, you give me the stalwart "Pumpernickle IPA" You may be loosing your touch.

But the exploratory ale pours with a mid-brown hue, and with garnet highlights that escape its translucent haze. Semi-stern in its ivory froth, its moderate retention yields broken lace behind as the beer falls.

Porter-ish in its aroma; its dry grain and wood scent is coupled with mild notes of coffee ground, earthen spice, and hints of toast and cocoa. Nutty and piney- the aromas culminate in a melange of all things grain and hop.

Grainy-sweet to taste, the beer is partly malty and seasoned with burnt sugar, toast, walnut and coffee. Diffused hop flavors are spicy and taste of pine, grass, and stem to finish. Earthy rye and caraway seeds entice the aftertaste, just as the taste of iron closes the ale with a great deal of assertion.

Light zesty carbonation and grain coerce the palate with an arid creaminess that lifts the sweetness and delivers on spice: Light whole wheat astringency and peppery bite ensure an earthy bitterness and dry warmth to close its palate sensations.

Although they bore me with their name, the recipe forumulation and brewing execution is precise, aggressive and focused on delivering on the beery version of pumpernickel rye bread. Even the hops seem right at home in this recipe.

Very interesting offering from an old favorite brewery. Had on tap during Pittsburgh craft beer week.

Deep, dark brown with a reddish tinge. The just barely off white head leaves a decent lacing. The smell is surprisingly subdued. The rye/pumpernickel seemingly overpowers whatever hoppiness there may be. Style-defying, and intriguing.

There is a slightly odd, grainy sweetness underlying both the taste and aroma. Not sure I'm a fan. This sweetness dominates the front of the taste, and is actually a little off putting. The finish evolves in a very interesting way, however... The spiciness of rye comes out and is complimented by a dry, noble hop flavor. Spicy and surprisingly pumpernickel-like.

While I'm glad I tried this beer, and it's uniqueness and craftmanship is undeniable, the sweet flavor I'm getting will prevent me from going for another pint any time soon. Great one-off beer, though.

Part of a 10oz. 3-fer

A: Opaque but actually a very dark red, which you can only see through peering at the bottom of the glass when it is held up to the light.

S: It's as if the pumpernickel cancels out the hop smell. It is a very neutral smell with a light hop scent. You really have to try hard to discern a smell. The pumpernickel comes across as rye, but those two smells are quite close in my opinion.

T: It was quite bland. The hops are subdued and almost completely altered by the pumpernickel flavors. This applies to the aftertaste as well. It is almost like a weak, peaty whiskey. Even through letting it warm up it just makes it more astringent at the end when you swallow it.

M: Lightly crisp. A smooth even that is felt mainly on the tongue.

O: I am not a big fan of this but I also don't like pumpernickel bread. Pumpernickel should be kept far away from hops, or so it seems according to this beer. However, monthly experiments like this aren't always gonna be big hits.

A - Medium brown that looks closer to a brown ale than an ipa or black ipa.

S - Notes of rye/grain malts with floral hops thats arent overpowering.

T - a very interesting take on an ipa. Big bready and grain notes up front with the hop bitterness an pine on the back end. I like it a lot. They took a chance and it is a different, but solid offering.

M - drinks very easy and has no alcohol presence. Medium to full bodied. A pleasant drinking experience.

O - would drink again. A solid offering, but not ground breaking. Worth a try if you can get it.
