Notes: What brings us together, as brethren of good beer, is a bitterness that runs through our veins. What would typically make goosebumps rise and sends shivers up spines merely fuels our intense love of the craft. Cast away your fears, embrace the fire and join our flock.

The smell is what should be expected from a good IPA, piney with notes of citrus. In this case, blood orange dominates. Great smell that leads you to believe you are about to taste great beer.

The taste exceeds expectation. You are first hit with a blast of blood orange flavor. Toward the back end of the sip the pine flavor really becomes apparent. However, the blood orange remains at center stage. The after taste is, you guessed it, orange. I am very impressed that the blood orange flavor remains consistent throughout. Perhaps the most impressive part is that this orange flavor somehow manages to not overpower the integrity of it being an IPA.

I rarely ever say this, but this beer has reached an almost perfect balance. In my experience, flavors can often overpower the style of beer and vice versa. The fact that the blood orange flavor is this apparent and consistent and yet does not take away from the style makes this beer a true gem. I would highly reccomend this Flying Dog brew.

Flying Dog has a balance problem. Aside from their standard flagships, all their weird, seasonal, creative beers are either too intense or too mild. This is more the former, jumping on the juicy, citrusy IPA bandwagon with reckless abandon.
It pours crystal clear amber color with a decent head that doesn't stick around much.
The smell is...blood orange, and lots of it. The bitterness recalls more orange and grapefruit rinds, but the titular citrus is definitely there. The taste is more or less the same. Semisweet orange and grapefruit flavor at first with some slight candy sweetness in the middle, and then a citrusy orange-rind, bitter finish that sticks around for a while.
This would be tough to pair with food besides a fruit bowl or some tropical Caribbean fish dish, since the flavor is rather intense and would overpower anything else. For the love of god, don't drink this after brushing your teeth! So is it drinkable? Yes, very, but only if you're okay with your beer tasting literally like a fruit. I don't need to drink this again but I wouldn't pass if offered. In all honesty, it is successful in being what it wants to be but it feels more like a parody of the juicy IPA style than a rendition of it. It seems like this beer is laughing at Grapefruit Sculpin and Fresh Squeezed, but like Weird Al songs, it's a great tribute for fun but you wouldn't enjoy it casually for its own sake.

Personally I was very disappointed in this beer. The smell and the coloring looked great, the taste and after taste on the other hand was horrible. I tried 3 of these to make sure my impression was correct an it was

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, best before 4/11/2016. Pours fairly crystal clear orange/amber color with a 1-2 finger dense and fluffy off white head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a light amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of juicy blood orange, grapefruit, lemon zest, orange peel, peach, pineapple, mango, light pine, light caramel, toasted biscuit, and floral/grassy earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of juicy citrus/tropical hops, blood orange, and light-moderate bready malt notes; with good strength. Taste of juicy blood orange, grapefruit, lemon zest, orange peel, peach, pineapple, mango, pine, light caramel, toasted biscuit, and floral/grassy earthiness. Light-moderate pine/citrus rind bitterness; with lingering notes of blood orange, grapefruit, lemon/orange peel, peach, pineapple, mango, pine, toasted biscuit, and floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice complexity, robustness, and balance of juicy citrus/tropical hops, blood orange, and light-moderate bready malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light-moderate dryness from bitterness as well. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately sticky, and lightly creamy/bready balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice fruited IPA style. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of juicy citrus/tropical hops, blood orange, and light-moderate bready malt flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

If this was supposed to be an IPA, I'm surprised. I thought it was a fruit beer since the can didn't specify. Poured into a pint glass. Clear, straw color with a one finger head that doesn't leave any lacing. Nose of orange and light citrus hops. Taste is citrus and citrus hops with a subtle pine hop finish. After tasting it, I thought it was a lightly hopped fruit beer. Medium-light carbonation and light body with no aftertastes.
It doesn't seem like I had the same beer that other people did. So this is rated as a blood orange fruit beer for fairness.
