The Barbie Doll of bondes, just perfect and classic. Blonde colour with very good creamy head. Clean aroma yeast. Yeasty, not too yeasty, spice in the background peppery cinammon, great drink with food, easy drinking. Good medium plus mouthfeel.

A: The beer is very hazy dark golden yellow in color and has a light amount of carbonation with lots of large yeast particles floating in suspension. It poured with a finger high bright white head that quickly faded away but mostly left a thin layer of bubbles covering the surface.
S: There are moderate aromas of apples and yeast in the nose along with notes of bready malts.
T: Like the smell, the taste is a bit fruity with flavors of apples yet the yeast really stands out and contributes a mild amount of spiciness.
M: It feels medium-bodied on the palate and a bit prickly on the palate with a low to moderate amount of carbonation.
D: The beer is easy to drink and the alcohol is well hidden from the taste. If you don't like yeast, don't pour out the entire bottle into your glass!

Bottle: Poured a hazy blonde color ale with a huge head with great retention. Aroma is a mix of wheat with some sweetness also quite apparent. Taste is very sweet at first and wheat can also be noticed afterward. There seems to be some spices even though the label mentioned that no spices were used during brewing, Not the best tripel I had the chance of drinking but still a pretty good example of the style.

Appearnace: Pours a cloudy deep yellow body with a dense, off-white head. Even with a careful pour, I still got a whole horde of yeasty chunks in my glass. I suppose that's what I get for buying such a tiny bottle.

Smell: A flower-filled, bready nose full of secondary fruity notes, mainly pears, white grapes, and lemon peel. Maybe some notes of soft, creamy cheese as well. Soft caramel notes appear after the beer has had a chance to warm up.

Taste: Light sugary sweetness mingled with soft wheat, over-rippened pears, herbaceous hops, and some mild flavors of clove and white pepper. Hints of caramel comes and goes. A touch of alcohol curaçao and a pinch of sea salt are thrown across the floral, mildly bitter finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Well carbonated. Powdery texture.

Drinkability: One of the more enjoyable tripels I've had to date!

More orange than amber, with a huge amount of large, proteinaceous floaters that I tried, unsuccessfully, to keep out of the glass. With a 'best by' date of end 2007 I wouldn't have expected the beer to look this scary. The head is great, however. Rich, creamy, rocky and sticky, it resembles very lightly toasted marshmallow and leaves fantastic looking lace. Minus the junk, the appearance score would be a 4.5 easily.

The aroma is enjoyable. I'd rather continue to sniff than drink that wispy crap that's floating through the glass. The beer smells like an especially fruity, yeasty tripel. Buttered, spiced apples, peaches and pears greet my nose with each sniff. Very Belgian and very nice.

Blonde is good beer despite its chunky nature. Actually, I'm not even able to appreciate the proteins, so all is well. It sure isn't subtle, that's for damn sure. It tastes young, thanks to the somewhat harsh, still bombastic alcohol. If I'd waited any longer, though, it might have been a solid mass of protein and would have been unpourable. The 'best by' date makes me think that it's at least several years old.

There's no doubt about it, I would have guessed Belgian tripel in a blind taste test. Each sip results in a burst of unripe pears macerated in young, still raw, pear brandy. The clove and white pepper spiciness is pretty hot as well, but that might be due to the alcohol more than anything else. Hard to believe 7.5%. It drinks at least two percentage points higher.

The taste score is a moving target, but I'll settle on 'good'. Be aware, though, that this is a boldly flavored, unsubtle, ripsnorter of a BSPA that lacks the refinement of the world's best versions. In fact, it would probably be great when paired with all sorts of food. It wouldn't back down from even the spiciest BBQ or the most pungent curry.

The body/mouthfeel is firmer than it is full or creamy and is exactly what this beer needs. It holds its structure through the long finish and is even a bit slick on the back end. As well, it's no more carbonated than most Belgian beer. That is, it's lively without being manic.

I know that the clumps of proteinaceous crap are only cosmetic, but visuals matter. Even though I can't detect them while drinking, I'm still put off by the thought of ingesting them each time I tip up the glass. Brasserie Des Rocs Blonde is a good version of the BSPA style, but is far from a great one. Drinking it is turning out to be a wild ride that I won't be all that sorry to see come to an end.

Poured into a St. Bernardus goblet ( every fine ale deserves a fine chalice! ), this blonde is a thick, hazy orange, with gigantic head on her, puffy, off-white, leaving copious lace behind. Beautiful.

Aroma is uplifting yeast, spice, and lemon zest...a bit tart and sharp, but a so thrilling, nonetheless, as it truly stands out.

Enters the palate meekly, but well-armed. It's a soft and lovely thing, with a transcendent character that can't easily be pegged. It's just a little beyond what you'd expect. Mild, maybe, but packed with spice and citrus fruit, it's a flavorful treat.
Forward mouthfeel, benifitted from the lush carbonation, this delightful blonde is anything but light, and swims merrily in the mouth, yeast contributing largely to the powerful presence on the palate.
I mean, it's just yummy, that's what I'm trying to say!

Truly, I don't think these guys can make anything ordinary.

This would be a nice dessert beer, a nightcap if you're not into a big bruiser like a barleywine or imperial stout. Or, it could be a dinner choice, but only if you have time to relect with every taste, to fall back in your chair and revel at the very wow of it.

12/01/05- Purchased at Bottleworks in Seattle, WA.

Presentation- 11.2oz bottle with a date stamp on the label. Poured into my Duvel tulip.

Appearance- Lighter orange colored cloudy pour. Off white large head with average lace.

Smell- Typical wit style characteristics. Corriander, peppery spices and citrus fruits.

Taste- Not as flavorful as was hoping, but still keeps you interested. Lemon and orange peel hit you first followed by a bit of corriander. Not a whole bunch of spices as I noted in the nose.

Mouthfeel- Tart and sweet at the same time with a larger carbonation level.

Drinkability- Perfectly fine brew. Not tops for my style, but a pretty nice one.

Had a small bottle at the Farmhouse in Emmaus, PA. Like all des Rocs beers, this one is full of floaties. Still, there's a wonderfully creamy white head to top this drink off. The aroma is a bit plain, but there are appropriate sweet bready malt with a hint of Belgian spice. The runs deeper with subtle vanilla and sugar cookie notes and herbal orange peel behind behind more ordinary, but no less delicious, pale pastry-like Belgian malt and yeast profile. Very easy to drink and a classic Belgian blonde.

Appearance: pours a clear yellowisg orange color with some yeast sediment floating, even though it was carefully poured. 1/2" head and plenty of carbonation bubbles are seen rising quickly. Some spotty lacing develops.

Smell: lemon citrus, grass, and yeast.

Taste: biscuit, lemon zest, oranges, hints of coriander, and a mild bitterness. The malt levels are mellower than expected.

Mouthfeel: light-medium in body. Crisp throughout. Aftertaste is short with the lemon and yeast tones, and is a bit refreshing.

Drinkability: nicely drinkable, and the alcohol is not noticeable. Worth a try.

Had this on-tap at the Brick Store Pub relatively recently. 1st time I've seen this one on-tap anywhere. Pours a hazy golden with a decent head and some lacing. Smells grainy and fresh- a very notable aroma of clean hay dominates. The taste is similar, very grainy, some light clove notes, and lots more fresh hay on the finish. The mouthfeel is extremely grainy an almost porridge like impression at first followed by a quick lightnning up. Somewhat strange beer, really conveys the sensation of drinking a lightly spicy Belgian pale while riding in a hay wagon.

A: Murky orange pour with lots of yeast residue in the liquid. A really tall white, but sadly; fluffy airy head that dissipates after a while into rather nice lacings.

S: Alcohol up front, obvious but also shy. Rich floral hops; fruits. Both dried dark but also ripe citric ones; oranges and lemons. Apples and mango as well. Malty sweetness, rather rich for this style. Spices.

T: Nettles dominates almost everything else and not in a nice way. Dry and sharp. Sourness. Yeast and spices. Some fruit, but way in the back; apples and oranges.

M: Long aftertaste, sour and bitter. Body is medium and carbonation the same. Warmth from alcohol.

O: Sadly the taste was a bit off; unbalanced and sharp. Otherwise this is not bad.

Pours a two finger white head that fades to a ring leaving some lace. Cloudy amber color with a ton of chunky bits. Medium carbonation and medium bodied. Slight hoppy nose. Starts malty and smooth, hops become noticeable but are balanced with the malts, sharper than some Belgian blondes but still good. $3.90 for a 330ml bottle from Liquid Solutions Tigard, Or. Label has: best before end of 2007.

Bottle from Eulogy in Philadelphia, PA.

Pours a clear golden color with a thin white head and huge chunks of yeast floating around. Very crisp with hints of apple and pear but the chunks of yeast were noticebale in the mouthful. Disappointing offering from a very good brewery.

750ml bottle poured into a tulip glass. Pours a golden orange color with some yeasties floating around and a large creamy white head with excellent retention and lacing. The aroma is deliciously fruity (apples and pears) and yeasty as well. There is also a slightly buttery malt presence in the nose as well as must and spicy hops. The taste is slightly tart with must, spices, yeast and a pleasant maltiness that is finished with some spicy hops. Mouthfeel is light with a good amount of carbonation. Overall, this is a delightfully satisfying brew from a simply phenomenal brewery. Recommended.

750ml bottle purchased as a single somewhere in NoVA, either WF/Vienna, WF/Annadale, Norm's, or Rick's. Black foil, and huge amount of floaties settled near the bottom. Best before end of 2007.

Poured into a Rapscallion glass, formed a 2" off-white head above the brass-hued brew. Some of the gelatinous bits made it into the glass, but what can you do? Head continues to grow, snowconing a bit, with reasonable lacing, foamy bits here and there. Aroma is effervescent, with some light spicing over the pale malt sweetness. Taste is similar to the nose, with the spicing melding well with the rest of the brew, not overstated at all. Mouthfeel is bubbly over the tongue, just the right amount, and drinkability is excellent. A 7.5%abv thirst quencher of sorts.

Like the three finger head in my Goose Island tulip glass. Good carbonation and sunshine color. The only thing that brought down an almost perfect performance was the crazy yeast flakes that were abundant in this brew throughiout the whole 750 ml's of this bottle. At first I thought it was ice from maybe sitting in my fridge for too long. Not the case, straight up yeast sediment that decided to stir at this moment I guess. The aroma is a light fruit and alcohol. Pretty muted from a Belgian Brewery of this prestige. The taste seems very m,uted and subtle with the usual fruits and spices I've come to expect and enjoy from this brewery. Touches of honeydew and cantaloupe and anise and fennel. The light palate was hindered greatly by the alcohol with the feeling of sediment on each and every sip of this beer. Didn't drink with as much exuberance as expected.

No matter how you slice it, this is not a pretty beer. I'm familiar with the loose sediment/protein issues that exist with this brewery's beers, so I let my bottle sit undisturbed in the fridge for 3 weeks before opening. I poured very carefully to try to avoid the sediment, but this was futile since the act of opening the bottle (and releasing CO2) was enough to get things moving. Other than the chunks of protein floating in my glass, I guess it looked alright -- clear orange/amber with a thin cap of fine beige bubbles. It smelled nice though, cooked apples and pears with an alcohol edge, bready and yeasty, slightly spicy. Sugary flavour up front, giving way to bready malts and light fruitiness -- not as developed as the aroma, but still decent. Bitterness was low and alcohol was well hidden. Slightly spicy in the finish, sort of like cinnamon. Carbonation was low, medium bodied, a bit sticky, faint warmth. Even with the poor appearance, I still liked this beer. Just close your eyes and drink -- that's the best way to enjoy this one.

Dark golden beer with shades of orange. Thick white crop of snow white head. Retention is way cool dude. Real earthy aroma. Herbal and musty. Yeasty. Nice hearty aroma. Great flavor. Solid base of pilsner/belgian based malts. Peppery hop accents (saaz??). Maybe lemon pepper. Nice fruit/melon tones. Dry finish. Alcohol is ghostly. The structure of this beer reminds me of a well put together saison. It's very refreshing and tasty. Slight spritz of carbonation on the tongue. Almost medium bodied. Very, very good.

I poured this from an 11.2oz bottle into a Watou chalice. It had a sticker stating best before the end of 2008. So why does it have so much floating yeastie particles in it, really large mis-shaped globs which look like loogies in my beer. Honestly I hate this appearance, I've seen these large particles in several other beers and it's really hard for me to stomache.

The arome is nice and Belgian-y, with hints of bread and esters which remind me of St. Bernardus Tripel. The taste is hard to rate, with the gelatinous crud floating around making me feel apprehensive with each sip. I guess it was OK flavor, but my cringing made it seem less tasty. Was this bottle subjected to improper treatment? I cannot try it again, I won't.

Bottle purchased from Green's on Buford in Atlanta.

Pours a hazy golden-orange color with a two-finger white head. The head recedes into a wispy layer on top leaving decent lacing.

Smells of sweet pilsner malts with good amounts of syrup-soaked pears. As it warms very light hints of leafy hop and bread-like aromas waft out.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Crisp pilsner malts with large amounts of light Belgian candi sugar kick things off. Hints of bready flavors work make an appearance shortly thereafter along with very light hints of indistinct spices. Midway through the sip solid amounts of overripe pear flavors work their way into things, carrying through to a crisp ending.

Mouthfeel is good. It's got a nice thickness with smooth carbonation.

Drinkability is also good. I had no problems finishing my glass and could have another.

Overall I thought this was a good beer for the style but nothing stood out as above average. An easy-drinking beer that's worth a shot. I found the bottle version to be sweeter but a bit more complex than the tap version.

Dark orange colour, compact foam.
The smell is floreal (fresh white flower), light.
Taste: hop (in somewhat, warm hop) and floreal, vanilla.
Hopped aftertaste, but not totally convincing.
Medium-light body.
Quite good beer, but a little anonimous, not characterized.
From Abbaye de Rocs, we wait something more.

Amber color with a thin head with short retention with lots of floating particles.
Nice sweet aroma with predominant notes of prunes, cinnamon, burnt caramel and coconut. It does smell like a Brazilian Manjar de coco (coconut pudding with caramel syrup with prunes) or even an apple strudel.
Similarly flavor of caramels, prunes, herbal hops, lots of cinnamon, red apples, flamed pears, candi sugar, wood and oxidized oranges.
Light to medium body with mild carbonation. Amazing how they hid the 7.5% abv.
Full or desert flavors and aroma. Much more complex than the regular Belgian blond, it is more like a bruin or Dubbel. Pretty decent.

Murky gold with a blizzard of yeasty chunks suspended inside. No head really made a presense after a vigorous pour into a goblet. Just some off-white bubbles closing in on making a froth but dwindles quickly only to gain a bit of stick around the collar. Not much lace either.

Aroma is as murky as the color. Musty basement, pale, dull pear, yellow raisin, and apple. Light, soft white cheese notes some areas.

Taste is nearly the same with a musty, dulled fruity thing taking the front and middle with over ripe pear and apricot. Some overwatery orange juice sits in there too. Lightly sugary, mainly mild and very dull across the flavor palate. Finishes with a slight grassy bite and some mixing white pepper, white cheese dryness, yeasty earthy must, and a nip of metalic tinge.

Feel is steady, softly smooth, clean, carbonated with a weakening medium body that has some thinning aspects to it.

Its not what I thought it would be knowing what des Rocs is capable of. I guess not every beer can be exceptionally good. This fell short unfortunately.

Appearance – This one is hazy and thick orange in color with some big floaties in the glass. The monster head did not show any signs of going down. As I drank the ale it left clumps of foam all over the glass.

Smell – The rich, yeasty aroma is kind of Witbierish. The yeasty malts are very aromatic though and the spicing is strong. What I really enjoyed about this nose were the hops. I don’t know much about Belgian hops, but this smell was incredible. Overall a very inviting nose that showed tremendous balance.

Taste – Oh, the pale flavors here are amazing. The hops are so smooth and so easy in the mouth it’s unbelievable. The yeasty malt is Even Steven with the hops, and the spices balance things out perfectly. I don’t know what a perfect BSPA tastes like in Belgium, but this is as good as I’ve had here in the US.

Mouthfeel – This medium-bodied ale has a great mouthfeel. It is so light and so fluffy in the cheeks it makes you feel like you’re dancing on air. You almost feel like if you spit out the ale it would just come out as a whiff of smoke and float away.

Drinkability – I don’t know that this was dead-on for the style, but man oh man did I enjoy drinking it.

Pours a pale orange color with a big foamy white head that settled into a puffy cap. The aroma is tart, with apple skin and lemon; some sweet candi sugar picked up as well. The taste is of a floral honey, some light banana, lemon/green apple tartness, and a little bit of a winey booze flavor. The brew has a moderate feel with semi soft carbonation, finishes slightly dry. A typical BSPA, nice flavors but nothing outstanding. Perhaps a bit too much winey/booze flavor/aroma
