Tastes like liquid figs! Ok and with a touch of caramelized brown sugar and plum notes. :-P

A very good Belgian strong dark Ale, heavy and malt and hop, 12 Oz bottle poured into a duvel tulipe...

This is 9%ABV so this will knock me down quickly, very tasty and worth the price, it was fairly cheap for the quality anyway. Cheers!

I will make almost the same review as beerchitect. The bottle pissed me off. I lost more than half the bottle because it cascades out. Except that part it's a stellar beer. One of the best beer I ever tasted. It's complex but clear in the same time. A perfect winter beer with bitter orange, cinnamon. It smells like gingerbread and tastes like it but with a restrain sweetness. It's one of this beer that can be enjoyed as a great red wine. I'll have to go back to this one and prepare a glass under because of its messiness.

330ml bottle - nice to see some offerings from this Belgian brewer showing up here in Alberta.

This beer pours a clear, dark orange-brick brown colour, with two fingers of puffy, loosely foamy, and fizzy tan head, which leaves very little in the way of lace anywhere near the glass as it quickly blows off.

It smells of bready and doughy caramel malt, besotted raisins, thin brown sugar syrup, muddled earthy spices, a touch of testy Low Countries yeastiness, and some very tame leafy and floral noble hop bitters. The taste is semi-sweet, grainy and crackery caramel malt, some ephemeral biscuity toffee notes, tacky yeast, dark candi sugar, indistinct black orchard fruit, still hard to differentiate seasonal spices, and a mildly perfumed floral and herbal hoppiness.

The carbonation is fairly active in its robust frothiness, the body a decent medium weight, and sort of smooth, with the yeast taking things down a peg or two here. It finishes off-dry, just, as the brown sugar and malty essences struggle to keep their going concern, um, going.

Overall, this is one of the poorer versions of this heady style that I have yet come across - it seems kind of astringent, instead of fruity and velvety. Not bad, per se, but much more difficult to appreciate than I had imagined coming in, so approach with a healthy dose of awareness.
