Bottled 11/2013.

Pours a hazy honey orange with a foamy khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Foamy streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, earth, and herbal hop aromas. Taste is much the same with earth and herbal hop flavors on the finish. There is a high amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a low level of carbonation with an almost flat mouthfeel. Overall, this is an average beer with lots of earthy and very bitter hop flavors that I don't care for too much.

Pours into a nonic a clear deep copper color with a nice looking sticky white head that leaves a full ring of lace as it settles slowly into a frothy mass. Not much hop presence for an IPA in the nose, mild leafy hops along with caramel/biscuit malt.If this was categorized as an APA it would get a high ranking from me but the hops just are not big enough all around here.Biscuit malts with caramel sweetness with a leafy almost minty like "herbal" hoppy finish. Not a horrible beer but the hop profile is lacking for the style.

Fish Brewing Co. "Hodgson's Bitter End IPA"
12 oz. brown glass bottle, "SPAWNED ON DATE: FEB"

Notes: Slight haze, probably from dry-hopping. Surprisingly good head retention and lacing. Pleasantly hoppy aroma backed by mineralish caramel malt. Floral, leafy, herbal, piney and citrusy. As usual the flavor follows suit with boldness all around: hops, malt, bitterness. Dry, bitter finish with lingering leafy, herbal, spicy and somewhat grassy hops. Befitting the Hodgson name, the caramel maltiness and yeast choice seem English in nature, and I wouldn't be surprised if there's a healthy dose of Kent Goldings in there as well. The piney, citrusy and spicy hops (or is that alcohol?) give it an American twist. As it warms it becomes much more rounded and balanced.

I am now committed to reducing, if not eradicating, my backlog of bottles. This one came out of the cooler at The Friendly Greek Bottle Shop.

From the bottle: "Spawned on Date Notched Above".

Ha! As a Piscean, I love fish jokes. As to the label, who is poor Hodgson? I would guess that he was a member of Her Royal Majesty's Navy, but to be cast off in a rowboat with only a quarter of a pint in his glass as barrels bob around him and his ship, aflame, sinks below the waves?!? A bitter end, indeed. As sailors, we used to postulate being cast or falling overboard, with or without life rafts and/or floatation devices. We all agreed - exhale as deeply as possible and float into Davy Jones' arms as the chances or survival and/or rescue are slim. Reference "All Is Lost" if you disbelieve.

This is MUCH more like it! Hodgson was not afraid of an aggro pour and directly following the pseudo-cascade, I had a dense finger of tawny head for my troubles. Color was a deep-amber (SRM = > 9, < 13) with NE-quality clarity. Nose smelled primarily of pine, but underlain with grapefruit and now, my mouth was watering. I raised a toast to Mr. Hodgson and took my initial draught in his memory. Mouthfeel was medium, but with a fair amount of effervescence. Taste was completely unbalanced in favor of very grapefruit-like citrus hops, but if you think that I am going to complain, you are out of your mind. Beautiful, sticky lacing began to appear in the glass as I continued to cogitate on Mr. Hodgson's fate. Finish began to evince a lightly caramel malt sweetness, but it was the hops that were front and center in this beer. This was a sailor's beer and if you don't like it, well, there's keelhauling for scallywags such as you!

Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a pretty orange/bronze color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is mild, some light malts. Taste is piney hops, minty, some malts, flavors seem to be just not meshing well. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a mediocre beer.

A - Copper amber color with small floaties and a thin, soapy white lacing.

S - Caramel malt, light citrus, and mild spice.

T - Caramel malt throughout with citrus and some herbal character. Moderate citrus on the back end which morphs into a moderate resiny citrus presence.

M - Medium body, very mild carbonation.

O - Very balanced up front with a building hop resin on the back end. Better yet, an IPA that comes from Washington State to the East Coast that's fresh and also date stamped on the label. Despite the score, I'd buy this again. Solid.
