The past few weeks have seen a reduction of the bottle backlog here at Chez Woody at the expense of The CANQuest (tm). It has also been at the expense of my beloved AIPAs and DIPAs in favor of flavors & styles that I generally eschew. Here we have just such a style & from a CAN! Will wonders never cease?
From the CAN: "The Northwest's Original German-Style Craft Biers"; "A refreshing brew touched by a gentle malt sweetness, Whitling Pig Hefeweizen is a bright reward for days spent under the sun. Crisp yet easygoing, Whistling Pig is unfiltered. Its classically cloudy appearance characterizes the best German wheat biers. That a hefe this authentic is born in the great Pacific Northwest makes Whistling Pig Hefeweizen all the more delightful."; "Whistle pigs are actually marmots. Small and furry, these high-country critters sometimes communicate with an ear-piercing whistle that's not soon forgotten. Marmots abound around Leavenworth. They seem especially at home north of town at Whistling Pig Meadow. To get there, ride up Trail 1417. Then, kick back, slip your feet into Whistling Pig Creek, and listen ..."
I listened to the Crack! just before beginning an inverted Glug and the heck with Whistling Pigs! I got two fingers of dense, rocky, tawny head for my trouble and as it began to fall, it left a load of sticky lacing in its wake. Who is going to clean up this mess? Color was a hazy Golden-Amber (SRM = > 5, < 7) with loads of floaties. Once more, the Gelt Gang took a wide pass. The nose was oddly biscuity, almost like a golden ale. Mouthfeel was medium to full. It was really sedated in terms of its taste. It was almost unobtrusive and that is not good for the style. It had a slight lemony flavor and as someone else remarked, it would be a great summertime beer, but as a Hefeweizen, it was sucking hind quarter. The finish was equally bland, lifeless and uninspiring. Oh well. At least I have another spent CAN for Jeff Lebo.

draught
Keep in mind, I've had this twice and only on tap. These ratings, not to be arrogant, are way too low, unless they are from older bottles. Very thick, fine bubbled and sustained, off white head. Medium dark golden orange, nearly opaque appearance. Subtle candied fruit aroma. Toasted wheat malt with maybe, the slightest cardamom to the taste, without sweetness. Medium mouthfeel with a good, gradually trailing finish. Trust me, if fresh on tap, this is really yummy.

I've never understood why the fish brewery also doubles into this Leavenworth thing. Bad to worse branding.
This pours cloudy and yellow. 1/3" white head, average retention. Nothing alarming here. Aroma wasn't a big fat of clove, so that is good. But it also didn't really smell of anything resembling a beer, much less a hefeweizen. Maybe a little bit of honey kissed grain, but that is about it.
Taste starts out sweeter than almost any hefeweizen. No yeast bubblegum, clove, some sweetness and wheat. A little bit of sweet lemon like candy approach. They need to do something to this to give it more of a body, less sweetness, something to dry it out. Might have actually been brewed with oranges/rind. Hint more than desired bitterness that does not seem hop derived at all. This is just one of those lesser wheat beers made for people who like blue moon, but I'll be honest: Blue Moon is better than this.

A bland, grainy wheat ale badged as a hefeweizen. Quite disappointing - no yeast, and the feel is actually unpleasant, like slightly oily water. Not something I’ll drink again, and I may not even finish this one.

Backlog. 12 oz bottle. Pours an orangish hazy gold color with a medium-sized head, good lacing. Tastes sweet, wheaty, a little on the thin side with the body. Tastes more American Hefe than German Hefe, but there are some Bavarian notes here, more so than many American Hefes. Not great, not bad, definitely drinkable, but nothing impressive. Pretty standard.

on tap at Anthony's, served in a shaker. This was labelled as a Hefe by the restaurant, but I don't see how that could be... it has none of the typical markers. Anyway, poured a hazy golden peach without much of a head or lacing. Nose is fairly nondescript, a little cream of wheat and a hint of pulpy orange juice...this comes out more fully in the taste, but it is fairly one-note and just not anything very interesting. Body is medium and carbonation seems a little on the low side...there isn't any kind of distinct finish. Wet and decently refreshing, but that's about it.

12oz can left in my locker at work by my friend and co-worker Shannon as a birthday present. Years ago, when Fish Brewing's Leavenworth line were draft-only, I might have had this, but I can't remember. Closest thing to a date is found on the bottom of the can, which reads, "259 2016."
Poured into a Chuckanut Brewing glass that sorta resembles a Stange, this was a cloudy dark golden amber color, with very tiny bits of sediment visible when peered at closely while holding the glass up to light. Big, rocky off-white head that left "beer neglige " style lace behind. Said head is easily agitated back into existence with a twirl of the glass.
Slightly sour, apple-like nose to this, at odds with the style.
Slightly sour and earthy taste at the beginning changes to a mildly acidic apple juice flavor for the rest of the ride. Very mild, fruity sweetness at the swallow.
The body is somewhere between light and medium, with a dull, watery mouthfeel.
Probably past it's prime, which may not have been much of a prime to begin with. I appreciate the gift of free beer from my friend, but I don't think I'll be having this again.

This was a huge disappointment. It was so sour, I thought I had purchased a cider. It smelled like Miller, and the taste reminded me of yet another cheap 'beer'- Busch. Unfortunately, I only had the choice of a 6-pack and I took the plunge that I immediately regretted once I cracked open the can. I know this sounds extremely harsh, but I hated it enough to create an account just to rate it poorly.
