Stopped by Detroit Beer Co. when passing through with a friend recently.

Detroit Beer Co. has that nice brewpub feel in which everywhere you look there are tv's, town/city significant pictures on the wall and a overall warm feeling. There were quite a few patrons at the bar and throughout, giving a general feel that this brew pub was a popular for the lunch/dinner crowd and a place to go after a long day at work.

I just tried two of the beers they had, the Detroit Dwarf and their oatmeal/sweet stout. Both which were quite smooth and had an excellent taste to them. I can see why they won a few awards for both.

Our service was good also. The waiter was interested in serving us and quite knowledgeable of their beer, describing each one to a T.

The selection of the styles of beer were pretty generic, having your typical stout, ipa, pale ale, lager and I believe a porter. They had just one seasonal on tap, but will be getting additional ones soon.

The food was excellent. I ended up having the Dagwood which was at a perfect portion and a very reasonable price. The menu was just about the same as Rochester Mills and Royal Oak brewing, but as I stated in those posts, had a nice selection for everyone.

Overall a nice place to go and reasonable in prices, with Pints being 4.25 and the food priced accordingly. I will return to Detroit Brew Co again and recommend it to everyone when in the area, or watching a Tigers game at comerica as it's not to far away.

Our group of 4 stopped here at mid-afternoon on a Sunday. The place was not very busy, so we sat at the bar and enjoyed chatting with the bartender. The pub is located in a storefront setting in downtown Detroit, and the interior has all of the appeal of a neighborhood bar. The brewing equipment is visible behind the bar as well as a viewable area of the lower level. A second floor overflow seating area is also available for crowded days. (This brewery's location is very convenient to Comerica Park and Ford Field for sports spectators.)

We ordered two sampler flights of all 10 of the beers that were available that day. Every one of them was brewed very well to style, and all of them also exceeded the typical characteristics for its style so that I gave an overall B grade to them. The standout was a specially-brewed beer for their 1,000th batch, a Triple Dwarf. The original Detroit Dwarf is an Alt style, so that a triple version is essentially a barleywine, and it was extremely tasty. I can recall visiting this pub when it was still young (10-15 years ago) and was not as impressed with the beers then like I was for this visit. Very well done DBC!

The pub offers a full food menu, but we had just eaten a meal elsewhere and were not hungry. The menu did look inviting. This brewpub is very worthy of a visit by anyone who is looking for good beer (and probably good food) in a nice environment. When in the area, we'd stop here again.

I was in this brewpub 5 years ago on a tour of the ruins of Detroit. The downtown (and all of Detroit) was so depressing that I should have had more than one beer... but I was more eager to get back to the hotel and out of town the next day.

Five years later, I am glad that Detroit is far better; though still struggling mightily and hopefully. (I was there for my fifth national Congress for a New Urbanism, a gathering of the tribe to celebrate the progress of different cities and, generally, yack-up the urbanist agenda.) And craft brewers are important in rejuvenating inner cities.

Detroit Beer was a true pioneer; opening in 2002 when Detroit was fast-approaching economic and fiscal death.

I Had a flight of their beers that I shared with colleagues and co-conspirators. I wrote two reviews. But the bottom-line is that craft beer is good for cities. For this conclusion, there is abundant proof and Detroit Beer is part of the proof.

Beers are mostly meh. I had a really decent rye IPA but historically the beers are not the attraction here. Interior is kind of boring, but overall location is killer so that improves vibe score. Service on most of my visits is good and food has always been excellent.

Small brewpub within close proximity to many downtown attractions. Has been there long before the craft beer popularity explosion and it shows. Brick and metal decor spotted with vintage beer signs and old photos of beer related nostaligia. The brew system is intertwined with the bar with a very Gotham City kind of feel. Unfortunately the beer is rather mediocre, but decent enough to pair with some grub before or after a ballgame. Not taking anything away from the Brewers, but given their great location, I wouldn't mind seeing an overhaul of beer recipes to get more asses in seats on days other than game days. Detroit's beer game is on the up, and these guys are definitely getting passed by.
