I don't know, I guess about 65, maybe 70 miles and hour. It hadn't rained in a few hours best as I could tell but the roads were still wet. Nearly 5 AM, I was making great time, a little more than a half hour to go. Moving down the Merritt Parkway, roughly 8 miles from the New York line, I came over a rise and there was a fallen tree running clear across the road at windshield height. I was up on it, there wasn't going to be any stopping here, all I could do was brace and go through it. Jed, sleeping, says I let out a "Hold on!!" or "Oh shit" or something, he opened his eyes and slunched down in his seat, as we came crashing through and out the other side. Jed had to say, "Pull over, pull over" a couple of times before I could process it and do so. Standing on the side of Merritt Parkway at 5 AM with a flashlight, looking at my front end to make sure I still had a front end, I heard a "boom" and 3 hispanic guys in an SUV with a shattered windshield that had apparently just followed my path pulled up, stopped and asked,
"You okay, you need any help?"
"No, I think we're good, thanks".
"Did you see the tree!?!" (It's funny if you say it with the correct accent and inflection).

I digress. Dave's bachelor party at Mohegan Sun just 10 hours before. An hour's wait on a table for dinner would set me off hunting out the brewpub that's here somewhere. Normally, I could sniff out a brewpub with great ease but I had to put forth some effort as the casino sights and sounds had me off my game. Found it. It's at one end of a large room where they keep the most degenerate of gambling types; horse races, dog races, and Jai Alai. A crescent shaped marble topped bar with betting machines dug into it seats a dozen +, and similar adjacent bar counters surrounding a large faux tree scaling to the ceiling. The bar back is mirrored panels above tiered booze and etched logo windows looking on 2 small copper fermenters above at the end of the bar.

2 towers of 6 apiece separated across the bar. I could see the guest taps (Sam Adams Octo, Killians, Bud & Coors Light) but I had to ask 4 times "What do you make here?" to get the skinny on all 3 of the beers that they brew. The bartender just didn't know what they made and had on. They let us try samples of their wares; The Thundermoon Lager, Sachem's Ale, and Mohegan (Matahga) Lager. Not a lot of flavor to any of them really, but the Mohegan (Matahga) Lager was light and sweet, clearly the best of the lot of 'em. I settled on a Sam Octo. I had been warned that the beer was "green" (whatever that means) and that I'd be better off going to some BBQ joint with a decent bottled selection located elsewhere, somewhere, anywhere in the casino but here, but I did not heed said warning.

In retrospect, if the beers had been better, I would've had a few more after dinner, and, uh, well, my reaction time facing down that tree a few hours later might not have been all it was. I think this brewpub saved my life.

* As noted before, this is now the Thomas Hooker Brew Pub located in the race book.

Biggest score here besides the line of Hooker beers (including Chocolate Truffle Stout) is that if you are playing the video poker the beer is free! I like that deal. Otherwise its a dead area, but it is a rare place to get real beer.

*This is a review for the recently re-opened brew pub at Mohegan Sun Casino. It re-opened April 2014.

The Brew-pub at Mohegan Sun features all Thomas Hooker Brewing Company beers. It's like a satellite brewery. It is located at the bar in the race book. They had some rare Hooker brews, that I thought were pretty decent. They also carry your run-of-the-mill crap macro-brewery beers as well.

Judging by the reviews I've read about this place there's not too many horrible things left to say that haven't already been said. Still I feel the need to express my horror and disgust for this" pub." Perhaps via my confession, I shall be absolved.

The atmosphere is lugubrious. You walk through the doors and the casino noise dies and it's so quiet and desolate you can hear a pin drop. I think I heard my heart sink. It actually made me sad to walk in and that's before I even got to the bar.

The bartender ignored me for 5 minutes (there was only one other person at the bar mind you) before coming over so I could inquire about the beer. While it was obvious she didn't know beer I like the fact that she did try. She told me the Peeping Frog ESB "was described as a cross between a cream ale and an IPA, whatever that means." I don't know what that means either so my curiosity was piqued enough to try it. It wasn't good. In fact it was downright depressing.

By the way, the guest taps are Coors light, Bud light, and Bud.

This is the brewpub equivalent of Sam Adam's Triple Bock. I came to this pub with low expectations but a stubborn belief that through a positive outlook and nothing to lose it wouldn't be that bad. I feel a part of my beer geek died here.

Dropped by the Race Book Brewpub on Monday night while spending some time at the casino. The race book itself is pretty big, showcasing a ton of T.V.'s for all of the horse and dog races. The bar itself is straightforward and has 6 draft beers available. You can see a couple of small brewery tanks if you look to the right top corner of the bar.

Beers on draft included the Peeping Frog Ale, Sachem's Ale, Mohegan Lager, Budweiser, Bud Light and Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale. I sampled all three of their beers and was honestly not impressed. Some tasted flat, some had off-notes, some were unbalanced and some just simply didn't taste good. The brews were not horrible, but you would think they would have some better beers available.

The bartender was cool enough to give me a good 6 oz sample for each beer to help me decide. I ended up going with the SN Celebration Ale, which was tasty and probably one of the best beers you’ll find at Mohegan Sun (I did notice the Pale Ale on tap at some of the other bars there too).

The best part is that the drinks were free, which was pretty awesome. If you are betting at all, you will get free drinks. So, I bet a couple of horse races (actually won $10 on my second game) and left the slips on the table and the drinks were flowin'.

All in all, probably worth checking out if you are at Mohegan Sun and looking to check out something new. Don't go in there expecting much. It's a lively place due to the gambling vibe and the extravagance of Mohegan Sun, but not a brewery destination at all.

Just visited this place for the second time over Memorial Day weekend '08 and it really hasn't improved at all. Its still one of the worst brewpubs I have ever been to..

Atmosphere is all right considering that you are in this giant casino and it can get absolutely slammed with people so this is an okay escape from the chaos outside if its really jammed with people in the rest of the casino.

I tried 2 of their house beers--The Sachem ale and the Mohegan lager. Both were pretty lousy with diacetyl coming through fairly evidently in both. The Sachem ale I had to send back but I was able to finish the Mohegan lager as it wasnt quite as buttery. One redeemeing thing about this bar is they do have guest beers and they had Sierra Nevada pale ale and Sam Adams regular and seasonal. I had a SNPA and it was tasty.

The bartenders were nice and the service was better than average, although it wasnt busy at all when I was in here. Prices dont apply as we were playing video poker and the beers were free. I am not sure if they offer food in here--we didnt have any regardless. Overall, lousy house beers with some passable craft offerings in the guest taps and a good place to escape away from the crowds if its really packed in the rest of the casino.

I was so excited to go to the brew pub at Mohegan Sun, just to try it. I ended up severely disappointed. I'll sum it up: angry bartender, dirty draft lines, charged for samples I didn't ask for. But they did have Sierra Nevada Celebration available!

The Brew Pub at Mohegan Sun is tucked away in the Race Book room, which is where everyone bets on horse racing and stuff. It is smoky as hell in there. The whole casino is pretty smoky, but this is really bad. My wife couldn't even handle being in there.

Before I get to quality, I must describe the service. There were like 50 people in the race book room, and two servers and one bartender. The bartender was insanely hurried and downright miserable. The servers weren't much more happy.

After standing there for a few minutes, the bartender finally asked me what she could get for me. I asked her, "what can you tell me about these beers you guys make here?" I just wanted to know what style each beer was in. She just walked away. The a few minutes later poured me a sample each of the lager, pale ale, and seasonal ale. I thought, "cool - samples". Then she put a bill for $3 in front of me. It's not that three dollars is so much money, but I didn't ask for samples, I asked for information. She should have at least told me what was going on, like "I can pour you a sample of each one for three bucks."

Now, the quality. These samples tasted like acidic piss. The draft lines were probably covered with more organic material than the insides of a septic tank. Clearly, even though they have these great beers made on premise (and even Sierra Nevada Celebration), everyone in the racebook still just orders BudMillerCoors. This was confirmed by my plentiful observations of other orders made while I waited to be noticed.

Sadly, I could tell that the beers were really good, behind the sour character. I was ready to buy a glass of the seasonal, hoping that the funk from the sample would have been rinsed away. Then I saw I was charged for the samples and then realized that even though I was still standing there with my money ready to order, I had been bumped to be the back of the line. Rather than wait around for another several minutes for my second dose of disdain, and then suffer through the smokiness, I decided it was best to go home.

I visited the afternoon before boxing at Mohegan Sun Casino. This bar is set in the corner of the racebook. 6 beers on tap: Heineken, Bud Lite, Killians, SN Celebration, Peeping Frog Ale, Mohegan Lager.

I liked the atmosphere because I like betting on horse races. Money goes a lot farther here than it does at the table games because there are no minimum bets. What I did not like were the smokiness and the crowds.

The beers were served in 12 oz glasses. I do not know what the cost ($4 maybe?) because I was betting on the simulcast races and drinking for free. I had a Peeping frog, which was marginally drinkable...pretty flavorless but not altogether unpleasant. I also had a SN Celebration, which was nice to see on tap. After these two beers, I decided to stick with cocktails, which, unsurprisingly, were poorly prepared, but I digress.

Overall, it is nice to have something available other than the typical suspects at the casino. If you're into racing, it is a pleasant way to kill a couple hours. As a beer destination, this does not even remotely register on my radar...two beers, one of which was decidedly mediocre, are not the makings for a worthwhile brewpub.

Worst brewpub ever. That's if you can even call it a brewpub. Seems like they put in some tanks and make a couple of beers just so they can say they have a brewpub in the casino. No attempt at making something drinkable at all. Only two house taps along with the usual Bud, Coors, and Heineken taps. When I inquired about the beer, the bartender who could barely speak English, could not describe anything about the beer, but could only recite the names of the beer. But she did give a sample of each which turned out to be more than I could drink. The lighter of the two beers was an overly sweet lager which tasted like candy and the "darker" beer was slightly amberish lager that was also overly sweet with hot alcohol flavors. Not worth the time to seek the place out even if you are 100 yards away. The brewer must be embarrassed to work there.

Abslolutely horid. This is a bar with a "brew bar" theme in the Mohgan Sun Casino. It is tied in with the horse race betting. They had 2 of their own beers on tap and about five others with only the Sam Winter was of any interest. In front of each stool was a video poker screen built into the bar with hardly any room to place your beer. The only entertainment in the area was horse racing; there were a couple of TVs above the bar, but so high that the angle to watch was really painful on the neck. I tried one of their personal selections, and when the barteneder brought the glass half-filled with foam I asked her to top it off but she refused and walked away. I drank it, tried another and tried to talk to the other bartender about what I was drinking but she just stared at me. I feel bad for the brewer, my gut tells me he does not get adequate support for his craft. Later on we went to the Irish bar in the casino, I'd suggest going there.

This is a brewpub? Difficult to find and shoved in a very small corner area. It seems like an afterthought. It's one long bar of about 30 seats with video poker built right into the bar. People are not coming here for the beer, and these are not your craftbrew brethren. It's really just a bar attached to the race book, and they happen to have a few of their own beers, which no one is drinking. The smokey atmosphere detracts, as does the shouting from the gamblers at the video screens as their horse or their dog misses the finish line. I don't see any brewing tanks, and there are only two micros on tap, with nothing on a menu or board that says anything about them. I tried the Cold Moon, which was okay. This is not a place to seek out, and you might even consider skipping it if you're in the casino, unless you can't find the beers anywhere else and you really want to try them.

Very unique to say the least - the brewpub was a small video poker bar attached to the race book. Now I like to gamble and have a good beer, but this was not location to do it in. A small dark bar area with the word "Brewpub" on the wall above the bar to remind me of where I was. Every bar stool taken, with few drinking the local offerings. Bartender was busy, so no time to chat. I figured I would try the Mahtaga Lager, and it was medicore. Color was a nice bronze with no head. Light carbination, malty, but not overly flavorful. It reminded me of an Oktoberfest. After standing around watching the numerous simulcasts, one beer was all I could have. There are other bars at Mohegan Sun that offer the house beers, but you can't get them at any gaming tables. Try some of the restaurants because they have a decent micro selection (Bubba's and Summer Shack).

Good god, this means I have to admit that I've been there.

OK, so I've written a few reviews where I've sort of whined and said, "eeeennnhh, wouldn't it be great if there was a brewpub in every kind of town, for every situation?" Hopefully, this place is not going to &^%$ it up for everybody, considering how many people new to the art of brewing with attention to quality and detail probably pass through Mohegan Sun. i hope they won't think THIS is a brewpub.

I find casinos depressing, but the fact that someone wants to serve fresh brew in one envigorating. It's too bad that this place doesn't respect what it has. Gaudy lights so you cannot tell what color your beer is. (I took a picture of my beer sitting atop a bartop gambling screen. The beer appears vibrant kelly green.) Serving glasses in the freezer, for that nice "ice in the head" occassion.

I took pity on the server, because he was obviously of native American descent and he's got some of the tackiest people glad-handing him. He clearly didn't want to be there. Efficient, though. Got that glass right in front of me pronto. After walking a mile across the parking lot, I needed a cold one. Pity that was all I got.

A journey to Mohegan for me included a stop at the brewpub, whcih is now called the Bow & Arrow Brewpub. My experience there suffered greatly because of a bartender with total apathy towards the brews brewed on premises. When I asked about the beers they brewed, he told me that it wasn't good and I'd be better off with a Sam Adams or Bud (among other excuses: "the lines to the storage tanks are long and the beer goes bad"--- well how about clearing the lines of the bad beer!). However, I persevered and was able to get a sampler out of him. Unfortunately, he probably never heard of a sampler and just gave me about 3 ounces of beer in a few small juice glasses t. The beer, which I had to drink under his watchful eye (one beer at a time) was not that bad but wasn't anything to write home about either. With a lot better attitude from the bartender and a little more effort from the brewmaster, this place could turn out a beer that they can sell and that people would buy over those "other" beers.

This one gets a poor score on atmosphere simply because it is in a casino. It's in the race betting room and there are video machines built into the bar. They had some sports on tv. I'm not a gambling man so the brewpub was right up my alley. 3 decent original beers on tap along with Sam's summer and 2 macro unmentionables. Nice guy slinging the beers but couldn't tell me much other than "dark ale, light ale, dark lager." Passed the time ok here, but the beer is not exciting or varied enough to be worth another trip to the dreaded Mohegan Sun.
