The Cyclone Series’ first foray into barrel aged beers is nothing short of unique. With our rum distillery in the same building that we make our beer in, it only made sense we would choose to age a beer in rum, not whisky or bourbon, barrels. After over a year of testing and experimenting, we created an inky black porter to carefully age in our Thomas Tew Rum barrels. After just the right amount of aging, the resulting beer is a bold and roasted porter balanced with oak, butter, spice, and rum notes from the barrel aging process.

Poured into a mug, the appearance was a dark amber/brown color with a finger’s worth of quickly dissipating semi-foamy head. Lace was sliding. The aroma had some milk chocolate, roast, marshmallow and alcohol. The flavor was sweet mainly through the prior mentioned aromas, roastiness was somewhat there, but super faint. Aftertaste was pretty boozy. Finish was boozy and sticky. The palate was between light and medium bodied with not much sessionability about it - that booziness seems to hit bit more than expected. Carbonation felt fine. Overall, that marshmallow in this combined with the booziness which the more I think about it, the more it seemed excessive.

Dark brown in color with a tall off-white head. A terrible nose on this. Sour as can be with lots of lemon, acidic and acrid roast, and metal. A bit of char in there too. The flavor is pretty much the same story. Metallic and sour with tons of roast and char. No barrel character, or really much good porter flavor either.

Dark caramel brown with the faintest of red tint shining through. Thin light caramel head with faint retention.
Rum and oak chips come through in the nose. Caramel malt and a slight metallic element underpin the rum. Almost smells like a rum and coke.
Unfortunately, the metallic note carries over into the flavor. Big notes of rum with raisin and fig underneath. The metal adds a sharp bite in the finish that distracts from the smooth porter this should be. Maybe the bottle wasn't stored well and oxidized some. Maybe not. Other flavors are very nice, though. There's a light burnt caramel flavor here too.
Feel is about right for the style, but could be a bit richer with the rum taste.
I really wanted to like this one, but had a hard time overcoming that off flavor.

A-very dark brown with some chestnut highlights and about a fingers worth of creamy looking tan head
S-malts, hint of coffee, and maybe a hint of rum though it is hard to tell.
T-Very sour in general. Coffee like taste sneaks in as well as some malts, but in general the tart sourness takes away from the taste.
M-medium body, light to medium carbonation, mouth puckering
Overall not great. Had a promising look and smell but I just can't get past the sourness of the beer.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a US tumbler pint glass.
A: The beer is a deep reddish brown color, with a short off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.
S: The aroma contains a lot of rum up front along with coffee, roasted malts and a faint touch of hops.
T: The taste starts out sweet with flavors of rum, caramel and coffee. The malt character is hearty and there’s a bit of smokiness in the background. The hops presence is mild but complementary and brings some balance. The rum flavor reasserts itself after the other flavors dissipate. The after-taste is slightly sweet.
M: Smooth and crisp, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.
D: Very flavorful with a good complexity, goes down quite easily, not too filling, good kick, nice variation of style, it tastes a lot similar to the Rum-Chipped Porter that was put out as a one-off not that long ago, but this is a good porter to drink for a while if you want something a little different in the style.

A- Poured into an oversized snifter... starts with a weak head with little lacing. Beer is almost, but not quite black in color
S- Smells nice... has a sweet spicey aroma. Definitely notes of the rum, that mingle nicely with the aromas of a porter
T- Has a very burnt taste to start, with a some light malt sweetness coming through with notes of rum in the finish. It's actually groing on me a bit as I drink it, but I think that the burnt, toasted qualities are a bit over overpowering vs the malty sweetness and rum presence
M- Kind of thin, with light carbonation
O- Not horrible, but far from anything amazing. I think a well done rum barrel aged porter could be a great collaboration, but this wasn't it
CHEERS!

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into my Cigar City snifter. Bottle says it was bottled in September.
a - Pours a deep brown color with a small reddish tint, one to two inches of light tan head and moderate carbonation evident. No real head retention.
s - Smells of dark fruits, rum, wood, roasted malts, and chocolate. Some definite sweet fruity notes mixing with alcohol. Pretty good.
t - Taste again is sweet dark fruits and molasses, followed by rum and alcohol, roasted malts, light caramel, and light chocolate. Alcohol is more prominent than in the nose; a bit fo a step down.
m - Medium body and moderate carbonation. Pretty easy to drink.
o - Overall a decent porter worth trying once. Cool to seem them aging their porter in rum barrels, unfortunately I'm not the biggest rum fan. Wouldn't seek it out again but worth trying once.
