Notes / Commercial Description:
After 13 years of brewing excellence, we deemed it time to produce a year round IPA style. Because a well made, well balanced IPA is a work of art, we took our time with this one and added our own local spin onto it. First we needed a substantial malt backbone to not only create the 6.5% abv, but to compliment later lupulin additions. Heavy doses of Munich Malt and Cara malt help to add body, mouthfeel and a touch of sweetness. Canadian wheat malt also lends to the great foam and head retention. 5 different hops are added at 7 different times in this brew, and the majority of the massive, complicated, but delightful hop profile is derived from Columbus and Cascade hops from the kettle boil (bittering, flavor, and aroma additions). The real icing on this masterpiece, however, comes from literally searching the near and far: Brewmaster Derek Luke married Annie Sherman, a Kiwi citizen in late 2011, visiting New Zealand for their honeymoon. Upon return, Derek came back raving of the legendary Motueka hop. Craving to satiate the “near and far desire”, this hop is added in conjunction with Chinook hops grown right here in RI from Ocean State Hop farms during the lengthy dry hopping process. The result: A fantastic IPA 100% produced locally with local hops, yet worldly in its own right!

Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a beige/orange color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of caramel malts. Taste is caramel malts, some pine, herbal notes, very little bitterness. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is an alright beer, but lacking in punch. Drinks more like an English IPA than an American one.

From 12oz bottle without a notch to indicate "freshest before date." Pours a clear amber/copper color with little foam. A subdued malty nose and the palate is similar. Seems more malt-driven than hops-driven for an IPA. A solid brew.

COASTAL EXTREME NEWPORT STORM IPA 11/28/16

Another from the latest beer shipment. Even though this brewery is in a state nexdoor to mine, I can't recall seeing any of their products in my state.

Poured from the 12 oz. bottle into a Lawson's stemmed tulip.

a: Clear amber/copper with a finger thick white head which receded to thin surface foam and dense lacing.

s: Light pine resin

t: Follows the nose over a bready malt base with a moderate hop bite. Dry to bitter finish. Later some pleasant spice notes develop.

m; Medium, good body and heavy carbonation tingle.

o; A good substantial pale ale, drinkable and flavorful. Actually improves as it warms.

I'm not a huge IPA drinker, this is really an IPA focused on the malts rather than the hops, if you don't like to be kicked in the teeth with bitterness this is the IPA for you-- tastes good. Awesome creamy finish.

This is a more balanced IPA with caramel malts stepping up around the juicy citrus (gets a little tangerine like) before the bitter finish rushes in. Perfectly nice.

I purchased this from Weis Beer Café in Mechanicsburg, enjoyed chilled in a glass.

The color is cloudy amber with thick off white head with fine bead and thick lace sticks. The smell is malty with a light yeast fruitiness and slight herbal aroma from the hops. The feel is malty up front with medium high carbonation and light bitterness mid palate with mostly dry finish.

The taste is lightly bitter at first with slight diacetyl flavor and piney hops w/ a slight yeast fruitiness more to the middle with stone fruit quality and gently grassy hop taste with finish on the dry side. I consider this a standard IPA, not great..it has a sort of English influence with yeast prominent in the flavor.

Pours a golden amber color. Aroma is Hoppy with malty notes. Flavor has bitter hops up front with a malty bread like finish. Drinks pretty clean but overall its a pretty middle of the road IPA.
