Notes: Ebel's Weiss beer is a very traditional German Hefeweizen that is naturally unfiltered. It has wonderful malt sweetness and a soft aroma of clove, vanilla, and banana. This deep golden colored weiss will make you think you are in Bavaria.

12 oz bottle, poured into a tulip glass at approximately 40 degrees F.

Appearance: Pours a bright and sunny straw gold, mildly cloudy beneath a fluffy white head.

Smell: Fruit and spice drifting above a ripe wheat field, redolent with notes of banana and clove. This is one of the first US "hefeweizens" I've smelled that has given me hope that I'm actually about to taste a traditional hefe.

Taste: Tradition confirmed. This beer billows with banana and bubblegum esters, atop a tastefully understated mix of clove and coriander. While nothing particularly stands out, that's not exactly a bad thing - this actually drinks like a hefeweizen.

Mouthfeel: Light while bordering on creamy, this is a quaffable brew!

Overall: I am quite pleased to have found another US version of a hefeweizen that is not a pale wheat ale with a misleading title. Will definitely repeat.

Served in a Devil's Backbone weizen glass.

So what does Cain drink? No matter, this brew pours a cloudy pale straw topped by a finger of white micro-froth. The nose comprises lemon zest, wheat, coriander, orange peel, and fragrant flowers. The taste runs down the same road, but the wheat and (now slightly weaker) coriander seem to mute everything else to a fair degree. A hint of either cardamom or black pepper (I honestly can't tell this time) sneaks in the back door and linger in the rear foyer for a bit. The body is pretty light, with a light carbonation and a slightly grainy feel. Overall a nice bit o' hefe, nothing too special, but good enough as is and more than drinkable.

Thanks to GDBEERMAN for the bottle

Poured from a 12 oz bottle, best by 9/04/10

A - Pour is reminiscent of a dull, cloudy orange juice, with very little head and minimal retention; no lacing to speak of.

S - Nose is on the lighter side with clove predominantly, with some hints of banana and bubble gum.

T&M - What stands out the most to be is a lack of carbonation. This beer is lacking the "crispness" that I was looking for for the style, I was hoping that it would be made up with a bit of a tart edge in the flavor, but it wasn't.

Clove notes are dominant, with the banana and bubble gum taking a bit of a back seat. I was looking for more phenolic flavors. The yeast is certainly present, along with a bit of softness, presumably from wheat.

D - All around decent, but lacking in several areas very important to a hefeweizen. On the brighter sides, lower ABV and rather easy to imbibe.

Enjoyed in a shaker pint at Bryant Lake Bowl in Minneapolis.

Pale, cloudy sunflower yellow, topped with one finger of creamy off-white foam that quickly becomes a silky yet fairly thick cap. Some smooth mountains of lace.

Yowza. Tons of banana and clove in the nose, backed by a sourish tang. Almost salty, like soy. Coriander as well.

The flavor begins with bananas, pears and apples with caramel. Upon the swallow, a smooth flavor of creamy French vanilla ice cream waltzes in. It's weird, but not bad.

Soft yet thin light body. Carbonation is light yet pokey, and the fizz is moderate. Sparkly, clean finish.

Strange. I like the vanilla ice cream flavors that roll in, but wish this hef had more traditional flavors too.

A - Looks pretty nice with a 1/4 inch of slightly sticky head. Color is a hazy bright yellow.

S - Smells a bit spicier than typical offering so it might be more clove. A nice bit of banana, yeast, and wheat are easily detected.

T - I get a strong wheat taste and banana with just a slight touch of spicy clove. I really like the fruity yeast they used not as filling as some examples of the style. Sweet finish.

M - Light to medium as expected for the style.

Overall again it seems that availability makes this one suffer since I ordered it from new york (halftime beverages) but a very good offering if I ever see it come to PA I would pick up a six pack.

Poured from a long neck brown bottle into a standard pint glass.

Appearance: Hazy golden color with a thick creamy white foam head that dissipated slowly and left a cloudy white peak. Looks like good Hefeweizen should. Don't forget to swirl the yeast into the beer when pouring to get the most of the flavors.

Smell: That good Hefeweizen yeast profile of banana, clove and bubblegum with a sweet wheaty profile underneath.

Taste: A very good American interpretation of a German Hefe. Reminds of many of the Hefe's I had while traveling around Germany years ago...and that's quite a compliment. Sweet and wheaty with a good yeast that provides mild phenols and flavors of banana, bubblegum, lemons and clove.

Mouth feel: Medium-bodied and slippery on the tongue. Medium carbonation.

Drinkability: Another good one from Chicago's Two Brothers Brewing (I love their Cane & Ebel Rye beer). This is a very straight forward American interpretation of a good German Hefeweizen, and I appreciate that. I like Hefe's and I expect a simple deliciousness to them, and this one is a very good example of that. Will definitely buy more for the summer.

Wow. Banana. Banana from top to bottom. In the nose, in the mouth. There's a little bit of clove-spiciness in the mouth, but not enough to offset the strong banana.

While the beer is in the spirit of a German hefe, I really wish it could be better balanced.

I had this as part of a sampler at the brew pub...A light honey gold not much retention or lacing...The aroma is mostly clove with a hint of banana, the clove is really nice....The taste starts off as sweet banana but then you are attacked by a harsh wood taste. A hefe should stay away from beer. Its an interesting concept but either the reality of the taste or execution is not there. Not easy to drink.

Maybe and this is a lean maybe, its worth trying to have a woody hefe.

Pretty tasty . . . Some decent hefe characteristics and some not so decent. Glad I tried it.
