Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a chalice. 2015 Bottle.

Appearance: Pours dark black with a moderate amount of bubbles. Solid finger of tan head that settles into a thin creamy layer.

Smell: A roasty and sweet dark malt driven aroma with a scent of peppemint, chocolate, and coffee. Big upfront scent of peppermint. Dark roasted barley malt with hints of chocolate, coffee, toast, smoke, biscuit, caramel, nuts, and yeast. Subtle hints of dried dark fruit and earthy hops. A pretty solid aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a roasty and sweet dark malt forward taste with notes of peppermint, chocolate, and coffee. Lots of upfront peppermint flavor that lingers. Dark roasted barley malt with notes of cocoa, coffee, smoke, toast, biscuit, nuts, caramel, and yeast. Light undertones of dark fruit. Also some light hop bitterness. A pretty nice taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Creamy, silky, and smooth.

Overall: A pretty nice twist on a Porter. Nice upfront peppermint flavor that doesn't bury the dark roast.

22 oz. bottle into a tulip glass

A - Beer pours an opaque black with a bit of red around the edges with a white head that is 1 finger in height. Head is well retained throughout an is a bit rocky by the time the glass is finished. Moderate carbonation clings to the edges of the glass. No visible rising carbonation due to the color of the beer. 4/5

S - Peppermint and dark chocolate absolutely dominate the aroma. Dark malt with earthy hops come out as undertones but this aroma is very simple and straightforward with massive minty chocolatiness. 3.75/5

T - Just like the aroma, peppermint and dark chocolate dominate the entire profile. No real transition from peppermint and chocolate to earthy and grassy hops. Dark cereal malt acts as an undertone. Hops are more of an undertone with the peppermint and chocolate leading straight into the back end bitterness. Lingering bitterness on the back end but bitterness does not linger for too long. 3.75/5

M - Medium carbonation burn and healthy dose of dryness throughout the entire profile. Heavy body despite the carbonation burn and dryness. Lingering dryness on the palate upon swallowing. 3.75/5

O - This beer really is just like eating a piece of peppermint bark, but without anywhere close to the amount of sweetness real peppermint bark actually has. Dryness is a minty dryness that lingers for quite some time. Enjoyable, but in small quantities for me, and as a dessert beer. 3.75/5

22 oz. bottle, 2015 vintage. Acquired the last bottle from the local beer shop.

Poured into a Duvel tulip snifter.

A - Blackish on the pour, opaque in the glass. Over a finger of frothy khaki-cream color head that leaves good spotty lacing.

S - Prominent aromas of peppermint / candy cane give way to notes of cream, chocolate, vanilla, oak wood.

T - Taste is the same - notes of chocolate, vanilla, cream, oak, wood, mustiness, with an overlaying peppermint bark spice. Milk chocolate becomes more pronounced as the beer warms.

M - Feel is smooth, crisp, & creamy. Lingering notes of chocolate & peppermint. Medium-full bodied with good carb.

Overall, a decent seasonal peppermint stout; definitely a nice holiday vintage. Would be interested in seeing how bottles of this stuff hold up for a year or so. A nice holiday offering.
