Finally emptied this bottle after a long slumber... a 10 year old locally brewed Wheatwine is a rare experience indeed. Review from written notes.

Into a small snifter, this vintage Bare Tree poured a glowing jewel-tone orange. Some suspended sediment was visible, a thin ring of white foam settled around the edge, not much foam when poured, though a swirl brought to life a ghostly skim across the surface. The bottle did foam slightly when opened but didn't gush at all.

Honey, sauteed apple slices, pears (a signature of the Bare Tree yeast character), very mead-like. The label lists hefeweizen and scottish ale yeast for this particular vintage. Slight cellar must and minor oxidation, but it wasn't a distraction.

Taste is very much the same, apples and pears in honey. Feel is mellow and clean with no residual sweetness left in the aftertaste. Again reminiscent of mead in feel and taste. Extremely mellow after 10 years, and easy to drink, though a touch low in carbonation. Surprisingly the '01 was one of the better years, up there with '06 as one of the top vintages.

Poured from a green glass 750ml bottle into a North Coast snifter. Thanks to Joe, Matt, Wil, Justin, Jay, Aaron, and Alex for the assist! Honorable mention goes out to Skiba!

A: Poured deep carmel brown with a thin, off-white wafer of foam on top. A few spots of lace were left behind.

S: Extremely fragrant...in a good way! A nose full of caramel/toffee, ripe red apple, sweet pear, vanilla, and mild spices.

T: See above. Caramel, that's not overbearing in the least, with fantastic notes of fresh orchard fruit, vanilla, earthy wheat, mild alcohol, and a shake or two of spice.

M: Big and sweet fruit/caramel that gets sorted out by a slight alcohol astringency, dry grains, and an earthy nuttiness.

D: Superb! We were very impressed by how well this beer aged after 10 years in the bottle. Thanks Matt for caring for this while you had it and a big thank you for sharing this with us!

For a minute I thought Delilah’s was slipping.

Me: I’ll take the 98 Fantome Winter.
Bartender: We’re out.
Me: The summer then.
Bartender: We’re out.
Me: The Hiver, any vintage, or the Black Ghost 01, or…anything from Fantome.
Bartender: We’re out of all of it.
Me: Some other aged saison then.
Bartender: We’re all out.
Me: Just let me look in your fridge…and then there it was, one bottle of 01 Bare Tree mixed in with an assortment of younger vintages. How much is this one, I asked.
Bartender: I don’t know…how about $15?
Me: God bless Delilah’s!

Leaps and bounds better then the younger Bare Trees. Pours into a small taster glass a light brown with a surprising amount of carbonation and froth. Aroma of caramel, vanilla, oak, earth, toffee and just a touch of hops, more then I was expecting from a 6 year old bottle. Taste is rich with powerful and slightly boozy malts, mostly caramel flavor. Vanilla adds some needed character to the middle and the beer finishes with a strong, dry peppery quality that balances the alcohol sugars well. Small amounts of wet, boozey fruits, plums perhaps are tasted too. As stated, a very balanced and enjoyable mouthfeel. Mellow, warming, and coating. Drinkable but in sips, not gulps.

(Served in an American pint glass)

A- This aged beer pours a deep hazy caramel brown body with a nice thin tan head. There is lots of sediment stirred as the tiny bubbles of carbonation rise to the surface.

S- The smell of caramel, toffee and some hints of fruit are followed by a faint peppery spice. As it warms the smell of oak and vanilla really start to come through.

T-This beer has a nice softness from the wheat but the caramel taste is very bold. The taste of oak, pears, vanilla are very smooth with a faint peppery spice with a hint of bitterness finish the beer.

M- The mouthfeel is medium-light with a fizz to it.

D- This beer may have lost some of the gentle qualities in age but it has a great complex flavor that has many wonderful characteristics.

Wow. Either this thing ages really well or I was having an off day when I reviewed the 2002 bottle. Dark copper color with a thick beige head that lasted pretty well. Thin and quick lacing. Huge aroma of wheat, malt, vanilla and oak. Rich, smooth body, with a complex blend of flavors. Wheat, sweet fruit, caramel and malt have nice interplay. Alcohol is hard to detect but a peppery aftertaste of it does come through periodically. The finish is round and wheaty, with the oak character asserting itself. Add to that I was really feeling the alcohol by the end of this bottle. A great beer.
