BOTTLE: Purchased at a Whole Paycheck in NYC. 1 pint .9 fl oz format. Brown glass. Orange pry-off crown cap. Ornate classy label.

"American sour ale brewed with real cherries."

HEAD: Pink colour. Soft and frothy. Robust. Retention is excellent - ~10 minutes. Leaves no lacing as it recedes.

BODY: Clear dull red colour. No yeast/lees visible within.

It's a nice appearance for an American sour/wild ale, but isn't as eye-catching as its Belgian brethren in terms of sour ales. Certainly appealing in a general sense, and the pink head helps set it apart.

AROMA: Cherry skin, faint must, vanilla/vanillin, pleasant sour cherry, and mild bacterial sourness (maybe a 3/10 in terms of intensity).

I can't discern if this was barrel aged or stainless...which is kind of a bad thing if barrel aging was indeed done. The faint vanillin seems to indicate wood, but I can't be sure.

To style, there are no overt hoppy notes. I detect no overt booze or off-notes.

Suggests a straightforward sour ale with wanting bacterial complexity but a pleasant flavour. I'm eager for the first sip.

TASTE & TEXTURE: Smacky lactobacillus acidity sets off the bacterial sourness nicely, hitting a moderate but tolerable sourness (~5/10 in terms of intensity) set off nicely by supportive acetic notes. Unlike many American sour/wild ales out there, I'm getting more than just straight lactobacillus...I think acetobacter?

Mild vanillin tones even out the brew, letting the sour cherry and cherry skin flavours shine. Fruited sours are often some of the best sours, and this strives to run with the big dogs, but lacks the depth of flavour and expressiveness necessary to attain its goals. Still, it boasts plenty of complexity to appease discerning drinkers, and in spite of its lack of overt oak tones (I think this was aged in stainless steel, to its detriment), it's a nice well-balanced brew with plenty of flavour.

Flavour duration is moderately high. Flavour intensity is appropriately moderate.

Not oily, gushed, hot, boozy, astringent, harsh, or scratchy, but it is a bit rough and could be softer. Has a nice smacky twang on the palate, with an apt medium body and an even albeit high carbonation.

A little coarse. Wet. Somewhat refreshing. Doesn't accentuate specific flavours or elevate the beer as a whole, but it's approachable and enjoyable mouthfeel-wise.

OVERALL: Two Brothers is after a classic premise - the cherry fruited sour ale - and they deliver with this balanced expression of the style. Adequately sour yet not puckering or crazy acidic, with a mouthfeel that suits the taste well enough. Surprisingly tasty stuff from a brewery I'm not well acquainted with, and definitely a beer I'm glad I bought once. $11.99 per bottle is a little steep for me to consider a second purchase, but prices don't affect my rating. I'll have to pay attention to Two Brothers' future sour ales...there's real potential here.

16.9oz bottle poured into a Boulevard Tank 7 tulip. Look is a deep, clear amber that turns a bright red when held to light. No head to speak of (even with a fairly hard pour), zero lacing or legs, and a small amount of carbonation bubbles can be seen making their way to the top.

Smell is the distinct and almost exact essence of cherry cheesecake with a graham cracker crust. Phenomenal smelling brew, and really unique. As the beer warms a bit of wine-like funk (is that a thing?) starts to creep in.

Taste is pure sour cherries up front, then a slightly syrupy transition to a funky middle and then a somewhat dry finish, although there is a bit of sticky cherry turnover filling that sticks around just briefly.

The mouthfeel is slick and has fairly low carbonation for the style (there are still enough bubbles to keep things interesting).

This is the first sour I've had from Two Brothers and it did not disappoint. Not on the level of something like Rodenbach's Alexander, but this is more than solid in the world of cherry sours and is worth seeking out. I'm hoping to see more wild ales from Two Brothers moving forward.

I've had two of these now. The first, when freshly released, wasn't too impressive. The second, a couple of months old is much better. It lacked the acidity at first.

Ruby pour with a light pink head. The foam sticks around for several minutes.

Tart cherry aroma. Slightly musty with some oaky vanilla. A little red wine as it warms.

The flavor is moderately tart cherry. Rather complex. Light vinegar or more complex acidity than just straight lacto. I really enjoy it. A little funky. This is balanced well.

Slick mouthfeel, with acceptable carbonation. Not as high as some other sours. Long finish. Tart cherry fades into more sweet and funky notes.

Overall, I really like this. I don't know if it was the age that improved this or if the first sample just was an anomaly or bad night for me. Excellent tartness level. Enough to make this beer pop without being overwhelming or overpowering. I'll be picking this up again if I can. Really enjoyed.

Beautiful, deep ruby red translucent appearance. Delicate head leaves sudsy lacing. Tart cherry aroma and flavor. Moderate tartness. Well carbonated with a semi dry finish.

I'm not used to seeing Two Brothers in bottle format, so this beer caught my eye when I spied it on the shelf at a local bottle shop. I'm a big fan of wild ales and cherries so I gave it a chance and I'm glad I did. It looks amazing with a deep red color and nice clarity and the taste was really solid; almost like drinking cherry pie. For me, this was up there with some of the big time cherry sours and hopefully they'll do more adventures into sours as I thoroughly enjoyed this. If you see this on your shelf, don't sleep on it.
