Dry, but with a creamy touch of Thai Palm Sugar and the spicy tang of Rye, all balanced by loads of the wackiest new Hops we could lay our hands on. Yep, it’s an Orignal. And that’s no Sin.

Best by 7/11/14 so a little past expiration, which I will take into account when scoring.
Appearance: Very dark rust color and pretty much opaque due to the darkness but red when held up to the light. Poured a one-finger off-white head that has quickly dissipated, leaving thick lacing.
Aroma: Caramelized orange, barleywine-esque. Sweet but not too sweet.
Taste: The very first thing I noticed is the incredible balance. The label states "a hopped up red rye ale" so I was expecting a lot of bitterness combined with a peppery flavor from the rye. However, the flavor, while robust, is much more restrained than the hops and rye would suggest. Cane and Ebel starts with a nice bouquet of caramel malt and a stone fruit flavor that may be a result of the addition of palm sugar. A moderate hop bitterness develops about mid-way through. The finish is quite smooth with a malt sweetness creeping in and then the peppery rye comes through in the aftertaste where it lingers. Sort of an orchestra of flavors all coming in at just the right times. 68 IBUs almost seems like an overstatement but at 7% ABV it may be that the malt is covering up a lot of the bitterness.
Mouthfeel: Just above medium in body but never too heavy. About average carbonation for the style and decently smooth. Good drinkability but unfortunately not a session option.
Final Thoughts: Really pleasantly surprised by this one. Picked it up for a buck, which was a very good deal. I'm typically not a rye beer fan but Two Brothers Brewing Co definitely knows how to work their malt bill to strike a great balance. Would I drink it again? Yes.

Old school mini whale for me. Rye IPA
Brunt amber, no haze, billowing beige head leaving pretty lacing on the glass. Nice bite from the rye and high IBUs - working together. Slight fruitiness. Lingering taste but clean. Full bodied.

Had this for the first time when I was in Wisconsin attending Marquette.
I would have thought this would have been classified as a belgian something, just has that BSDA meets rye kind of vibe.
Anyhoo, chestnut brown with some dark red running to the edges. 1/4" off white leaning beige colored head. Aroma was so much belgian strong dark ale, had the yeasty dark fruit notes, brown sugar, nuttiness and a fortified red wine like presence to it.
Taste, what they hey!? A Summit like onion and garlic influence, the big Simcoe bitterness. Where are we going with this? The beer takes on a everything but the kitchen sink approach. They hopped a bdsa yeast beer like an ipa. WTH? And we haven't even mentioned the rye aspect of it, which I thought to be a little obscured with all the schizophrenic like qualities of this beer otherwise. I mean, all in all, I didn't hate the beer. No doubt there is a lot going on. I dunno if it warrants its high marks here, but it does do something unique to say the least.

Rye beer is one of my favorites and this one checks about all the boxes. Great taste, thick creamy head, undeniably great color. The mapping on the sides of the glass reminds you of what you have put down your throat already in anticipation of more.

Purchased a Two Brothers variety case at Costco primarily for this beer as it is probably my favorite style. Poured from a bottle with a BEST BY date of 6/23/20 into a tulip. A beautiful dark amber color and thin cream-colored head was pretty spectacular. Nice balanced aroma and taste of light citrus and sweet toasty malt. Rye bitterness is pronounced and delightful. Mouthfeel can best be described as smooth, not too thin, not syrupy, and light on carbonation. Would love to try a fresher bottle (or a draft!) of this beer. Rye beers seem hard to find on a regular basis, so I was happy to get these.

I purchased a 6 pack of this on a trip to Chicago in 2016. I'm a big fan of rye IPAs and I found this to be an outstanding sample of the style, with the rye spice perfectly augmenting the hoppiness of the IPA.

Appearance: Pours a dark copper-brown color that is opaque. Nice strong, sticky, and heavy head that lingers.
Aroma: Strong aromas of American hops. Some citrus and some tropical aromas. Has a slightly toasted bread, toffee and caramel sweetness to the nose as well.
Flavor: Strong dank hop flavors of melon and earth. This is followed by a heavy darker malt sweetness of sweet caramel, toffee, and some cherry. There is a good amount of bitterness to balance out the sweetness, but not all the way. Ultimately it finishes more sweet than bitter. A slight rye spiciness, but I think it is definitely overshadowed by the bittering hops. The alcohol is apparent.
Feel: Slightly heavier and sticky with the malt profile. Good carbonation though. Finishes moderately bitter like an IPA, but ultimately a stronger malt profile wins out on the end to finish sweet and malty.
Overall: Quite a delicious rye beer. Aggressively hopped and drinks similar to an IPA or rye-IPA, but packs a stronger malt profile that characterizes this beer. The rye is overshadowed by the hops. I think it could use slightly less hops to showcase the rye flavor. Drinks like a rye-IPA. Stronger darker malts remind me of a barleywine, but definitely fits the rye-IPA profile. Similar to an IPA, but darker and more malt-focused.

12oz bottle bb 07/07/19 poured into a Spiegelau IPA glass at fridge temp 7% ABV 68 IBU. The beer pours bright dark amber in color with sticky khaki colored head. The head recedes slowly to a thick cap leaving very nice lacing. The aroma is faint with rye spice, pine and vague fruit. The taste is semisweet caramel rye, with some chocolate and pine showing up at the end. The finish is medium bitter and dry. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with average carbonation. Overall, very good. I really like this style and this is a nicely done example.

Best rye I've had in a long time. We'll balanced between spicy rye notes, slightly sweet malt backbone fully supported by the sugar addition. Delicious!
