Bleeding cherry juice dark red in color. There's a thin beige head which doesn't rest on top for too long but leaves many small dots of lace all over the glass which do stay for a long time.
The nose is filled with loads of rye and piney flare.
This one rocks the tongue with loads of rye that tingle the tongue. There's a slight bite from the alcohol but not enough to dissuade me from taking another sip. There's still a nice dry hoppy finish.
It's delicious to say the least. Many thanks to dhchatfield for this one.

On tap at Jealous Monk in CT. Nice dark orange color. Reasonable head. Great rye bite. Had with my sausage meal, great compliment. Love a good rye beer and this is one of the better I have had.

I went to a Two Brothers tasting at Mrs. Murphy & Sons Irish Bistro. The beers in the tasting were OK but I really enjoyed the hell out of C&E on-tap. I'm having a love affair with very hop forward brews that are made with Rye - just works for me. It reminds me that I have to get some Hop Rod Rye!
The nose is subtler than it could be. There is a great mix of dark fruit, some citrus and big malt backbone. I want more!
The appearance is a very handsome dark reddish brown at the top of the glass with a golden color toward the bottom. The head is so soft and creamy looking. Lacing is fantastic layers and icicles.
With a sip it's clear it's a winner. A fabulous beer. The hop is sweet mixed with caramel but there is also a good amount of grassy hop bite at the back of the palate too. As always with the rye, you get that lovely distinctive dryness that adds to a dry hop finish and makes it feel like a very quaffable brew.
The body is strangely creamy on the palate. It makes the beer feel more full bodied than it actually is. The hop and rye provide a nice refreshing dryness. It's a refreshing and satisfying medium bodies brew with a low/medium carbonation.
It's clearly not what it is when it is fresh on-tap but still a fantastic beer.

Reddish-mahogany in appearance, with more amber tones on the edges. About half a finger of off-white head. Good lacing and minor retention. Smells good. A musky, grainy earthiness mixed with roasted malt. Not overly pungent, but sufficiently aromatic. Quite a good brew. Initial hop bite that's semi-piney. That gives way to a full malt and rye middle that tactfully builds toward the end. Back end is sharp but creamy and allows the piney hop notes to re-emerge in the mouthfeel. A very flavorful brew that's not boastful. A solid take on the rye ale.

Review from BeerAdvocate Magazine Issue #49 (Feb 2011):
Cult classic comes at us throwing hops and rye. Dim mahogany topped with an off-white lacing, this looks like a serious beer. Aromas of spicy rye, orangey hops, toasted bready malt and fruity esters ... mouthwatering. Big malty body flexes with a creamy smoothness. Rye grips the taste buds as a hint of caramel caresses. Hops come off a little sharp to start, but the flavor kicks in with citrus rind and mild tobacco. Warming alcohol has no problem showing its 7 percent, warming and a little fruity. Truly epic drinking.

A - Deep amber, large frothy and sticky head, moderate carbonation, a bit hazy but translucent, immense lacing.
S - Lots of floral and citrus hops perfectly balanced by toasted and sweet caramel malt aromas.
T - As in most hoppy beers the hops hit first, just a lot of great hop flavor but it immediately followed by a definite rye sweetness and twang. Really great balance of citrus and floral hops by rye, toasted malt, dark caramel sweetness.
M - I thought with the palm sugar this may be a bit on the dry side, but not at all. Not a heavy beer but some really nice moderate body. There is a silkiness to it but the higher carbonation and alcohol at the end clean it up nicely. Ends with a nice citrus bitterness.
O - This is just a great beer. There is something to please a lot of people. Lots of hop flavor and a good bit of bitterness. Tons of malt flavor with the complexity of rye and some palm sugar which may not be tasted directly but it must add to the complexity of flavor which is great. Higher on the alcohol but not a huge beer. Fantastic rye beer.

Purchased from Ray's Liquors in Wauwatosa, WI. I found a "best by" date of 4/22/09 printed on the bottle. Shoot. Poured a very dark red body with no head, but a few swirls gave it a little cap. Aroma is of spicy and grassy hops. Full bodied and smooth, this beer has a big roasted caramel flavor with a little "bite" from the rye. Great peppery hop finish after each sip. Of course this is better fresh, but it was still as good as I remember the first time I tried it.

Pours from the 22oz bomber into my tulip glass a striking deep garnet hue with great clarity. A half inch of bone white foam leaves patches of sticky lace on my glass. Looking good! Aromas here instantly draw you in with a huge, vibrant melding of grapefruity, citric oil dripping hops combined with the most prominent spicy rye aroma I have ever come across in a beer. Sidelines of caramel sweetness, but the fresh dank green hops steal the show. Wow, this brew smells so damn good it's hard to put into words, you must try it for yourself!!
First sip brings a smooth, slightly dry bready carmalized maltiness upfront that has a big spicy kick of rye flavor. Bold citrusy, grapefruity resinous hops waste no time moving in and integrate seamlessly into the brew, creating a nice balance between sweet and bitter. Flows down with some more spiciness and a lip smackin hop cone finish. Tasty stuff.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a really nice creamy aspect that fills the mouth with each sip. Spot on carbonation makes this one disappear from my glass with the greatest of ease. Overall, the best brew I've had from Two Brothers thus far and a benchmark for the rye beer style. Read on the Two Bros website that this might become a regular in six packs...please, please, please let that be true as I for one will buy it all the time!

Received from Jay23 in Secret Bunny '07. I like rye beers and had been wanting to try this one for a while.
Tawny red body with a quarter inch of white head on top to start. Head reduced to a thin layer and initially left a ring of lace as it subsided.
Smell is strong with hops and graininess. Hops are a little floral and a little grapefruity citrus and even has a touch of pine in there. Some crystal malting comes out as well to add a touch of simple sugar sweetness that works in nicely with the rye graininess.
Nicely balanced beer here. Lots of grainy rye underneath with some biscuity breadiness. Citrus pith and pine resin round out the hops. Finish is dry with a lingering bitterness.
Mouthfeel is nice and crisp. Not full bodied, but not thin either, although the carbonation probably makes this feel lighter on the tongue. Finish is slightly dry and makes you want some more.
Awesome drinkability. I love rye beers. A dry finish, some bitter hops, and some prickly carbonation make a super drinkable beer in my opinion. I could drink this all the time. Makes me want to get a 6er of one of my fall back beers which happens to be a rye pale.

Pours a cloudy deep ruby with a sizable head. Aroma is sweet citrus hops with some spicyness. Grainy rye taste with bitter hops and roasty sweetness. The word that kept coming to mind was harsh. Just a little too harsh for my tastes. Otherwise it's a generlly good flavor and a decent drink, just maybe not quite as pleasing as Founder's offering.

Appearance- This BEER pours a murky brown/red color. The head starts out one finger thick, but ends up much less than that.
Smell- Cane and Ebel has an earthy, almost musty smell in the bottle. Once poured, I could pick up a pepper and caramel smell.
Taste- At first sip, I could taste a caramel/malt flavor. There is sweetness to this initial taste, but the earthy barley flavor keeps it from being overwhelming. Rye & sweetness gives way to a slight bitterness from hops.
Mouthfeel- slightly sticky... lingers on the tongue with bitterness and slight earthy tones
Overall- I am very happy with the way earthy rye and bitter hops dance in this ale. This unique ale really works!
