22 oz. bottle, with no apparent bottled on date present. Retro release number 4 of 15. A remake of one of their beers from 2007, rebrewed in 2008. All I know is that this bottle has been on the shelf for a long while, the local store still has some, and I thought it was the time to try it.

Poured into a Duvel tulip glass.

A - The bottle basically exploded upon uncapping it, and I lost over half of the bottle, and the remains pours a dark dark murky peach color with like five plus fingers of giant foaming off-white head.

S - The smell has basically deteriorated from what this beer once was and all that now remains is earthy, yeasty green apple skin and some must. The aroma is still quite pleasant in my opinion, but this is definitely not what it should be like.

T - Taste isn't bad either, but it has still gone downhill indefinitely. Faded earthy herbal hop bitterness, and yeasty green apple. A long time in the bottle has turned this beer sour.

M - The feel is bitter and dry. Clean maltiness.

Overall, I am tempted to pick up another bottle to see if it gushes all over again, but I am also apprehensive. Either way, it is long past it's prime. One of my first major disappointments in reviewing a beer on BeerAdvocate.

(Served in a tulip glass)
A- This beer pours a touch of haze to a orange body with a slow big carbonation and a meringue of egg cream that sticks to the glass in cobwebs with each sip.

S- The citrus hops aroma has a faint jammy quality to them with a fresh floral grapefruit skins hops and an interesting watermelon rind note to them in the finish.

T- The citrus hops are a bit softer than the nose and a soft earthy spice to them takes on more of a grapefruit zest note as it opens up. There is a pale malt note that starts to grow underneath as the beer opens.

M- The medium mouthfeel has a gentle fizz and the 68% ABV is well hidden.

O- The nice fresh hops flavor makes this very sessionable with a wonderful depth to the hops in the nose but a bit less in the taste.

I like the Pillar Of Salt. It is a tasty beer. The beer pour a beautiful clear golden color with slight copper hue. The head is nice an thick and is lacing nicely. The smell is a little weak, but you can pick up fresh hops that provide a pine like effervescence. The taste starts with a good rye push, then the jobs kick in which give a good pine flavor with a subtle citrus kick. The mouthfeel is a good medium bodied ale with decent carbonation. Overall it is one of the better two bros comebacks!

Fizzes up out of the neck of the bottle with intensity. That combined with the not entirely common tart spiciness of the aroma made me think for a second it was infected. It wasn't. It's just not normal.

Pours dark. More gold than the name had led me to anticipate, but thankfully much more reasonably fizzy than the uncapping had led me to expect. Smells, like I said, crispy citrusy and spicy, and the combination between citrus and spice nodes is complex in a way that doesn't at first seem intentional. It's a little apothecarian, like an old timey tincture. Also a little like a straight up Belgian. The zippy rye is manifest, but if it wasn't mentioned in the beer's name I might have mistaken it for something else, because rye just isn't normally presented in this manner.

Tastes like it smells: different, but pretty good and well put together. White pepper starts things off, moving into sharp rye backed with pale, biscuity barley. This moves into a middle of lemon zest and orange rind and ends with a yeast profile that reminds me of Founder's' beers in a way I'm not quite learned enough to clearly explain.

This is part of the Retro Release series. Bringing back 15 beers from the past 15 years of operation. This is number 4 of 15.

A: Pours a slightly hazy amber/golden/orange color. A dense, two finger white head forms with excellent retention and lace. This is a looker.
S: The first thing that hits the nose is a perfume like floral aroma. Some fruity esters of apples and pears. Slightly slick and oily, but not bad. Peppery spice, bread and biscuit. Really enjoyable.
T: Follows the nose with a great floral, perfume like flavor. Zesty citrus and lemon. Other fruity esters that follow the nose. Peppery spice and biscuit from the rye. Maybe just a bit to slick and oily. A bit on the soapy side.
M/D: The body is on the lighter side of medium. Soft and fine carbonation. Smooth and creamy. Just a bit of soapy slickness, but not bad. Really easy and enjoyable to drink. The bomber will be gone in no time.

I love rye beers, and this is a good one. It is basically the opposite of the mega hopped Cane & Able, Founders Red Rye, or Hop Rod Rye. Much more delicate, and incredibly enjoyable. The soapiness almost becomes to much, but still something I highly recommend.
