Poured into a standard pint glass a clear copper color with a thinner but well sustained white head that held pretty well.Caramel malts and mild earthy hops in the nose,as expected quite English in nature.Caramel/biscuit malt flavors dominate the palate with just a smattering of earthy and leafy hops in the finish.A good beer for what it is and it was quite food friendly.

Blackstone "Maris Otter"
12 oz. brown glass bottle, notched "BEST BEFORE DATE INDICATED" "J" (for July) "YEAR 15" " WEEK 3" = (3 and a half months to go so still fresh)
$1.50 @ Trader Joe's #664, Nashville, TN

When I saw the Maris Otter designation on the label I was a little skeptical. How much Maris Otter would they use? Will it just be a thin thread that's almost impossible to make out? Well, they've used enough, it smells of Maris Otter and tastes of Maris Otter. If you've never brewed with it before, this is the perfect example of what it is, so buy a bottle and you'll know what you're in for. But what is it? I'm not even sure I can describe the character of Maris Otter. It's a much richer malt than most. How the strain of barley and floor malting does that, I don't know, but it's very distinct. It's a little like Brettanomyces in my opinion, with an almost metallic edge and some earthiness and grassiness like wet straw. It's perfect for more basic English style ales because you don't need a lot of hops to liven the beer, or carbonation.

This was my first beer from Blackstone, and I'm impressed. Quite nice. Well worth trying.

Had this on tap at the Flying Saucer in Nashville.
A deep golden color, clear, with a short white head, good retention and lacing. The aroma is slightly sweet and malty. Hops present, but not as bold as other pale ales. The flavor well balanced, good blend of maltiness and hoppy bitterness. Well carbonated, good body, another good one.

Had this at Blackstone Restaurant tonight on tap. Was passing through and love trying the local beers. This caught my eye on the beer list, because as a home brewer, I love Maris Otter malt. Was expecting a little more of the Maris Otter character at first but what hit me was the hops.

A- very clear light amber color with a small white head.

S- very strong aroma of the east Kent Goldings hops, floral, grassy. Not much of a bready/toasty or carmel character coming through. Pretty hop dominate.

T- some hop bitterness in the up front and swallow. Smooth drinking, but some of flavor from malt not present as expected. As beer warmed up, some of the Maris Otter character started to come through.

M- medium body some drying, but not too much. Creaminess became more apparent ad beer warmed up.

O- very drinkable beer, just a little different than o was expecting from a Maris Otter dominated beer.

Appearance: Pours a copper/orange color, too thick of a white head with great lacing. The head is dissipating too rapidly and there is not enough carbonation in the beer.

Smell: Not much. Perhaps metal. Perhaps the slightest amount of skunk.

Taste: A mouth full of pocket change that's been skunked.

Mouthfeel: Watery, no carbonation.

This beer SUX. Please don't drink it. You could die of something nasty.

This is my first beer from this brewer. Picked it up in a mixed sixer from Cash Saver in Midtown Memphis. I do typically like English Pale Ales. Poured into a pint glass, pretty and typical of style hazy gold with a nice off white head that only lasted a few minutes.

Smells like an EPA earthy, nutty and nicely hopped (not by American standards). A little more leafy smell than I would prefer, but not bad.

Taste is immediate English style hops. Much like it smells with an emphasis on the bitter. Malt is there but nicely balanced. My only complaint is the nuttiness and earthy hops come together to almost a puckering effect. As it warms some of the malt reasserts itself to help the taste.

Mouth is medium bodied and just the right amount of carbonation. The bitter lingers on the tongue a little longer than I like, but this too is moderated after a little warming.

If I judged on the first sip I would not have been overly pleased, but taken over the course of the glass this is an enjoyable beer and good example of style. Now I am ready for the others in the mix.

Had this at the Repeal of Prohibition event in St Louis.

This was not what I was expecting. It had what I can best describe as a wine flavor but with a carmel and more malty taste. While it was sweet, it wasn't overwhelmingly so and had a nice hop character. Initially I thought I wasn't going to enjoy it but the more I tasted the better I thought it was.
