Poured into a glass mug, the appearance was a mild burnt dark orange to brown color with a small cap of a little white foamy head. Lace formed somewhat subtle in and around in some filmy glances.
The aroma had some sweet nuts, somewhat like pecans, with an adequate toasty to roasty character playing with some shortbread, pie crust and some earthy variables.
The flavor leaned towards a slight sweet maltiness but unselfishly allows those pecan-like/nutty tones roll in with enough dark toast and roastiness. Nicely blended aftertaste of nuts, dark toast, some earthiness, tree bark and a light bitter dark chocolate.
The mouthfeel was almost medium bodied but sat just a touch under with a good sessionability about it. Good carbonation and some smoothness. Slight touch of stickiness. Nice balanced finish of sweet to roasty/toastiness.
Overall, a nicely done English brown ale well worthy of coming back to.

I love a good brown ale. Drank late on a trip to Ellicottville, I recall a balanced body, medium to dark brown color, and aromas and flavors all over the spectrum. Sweet but not overly, thankfully. It also was nutty, bitter, breadlike, roasty, with good yeast flavor and very slight hopping. Light enough for a summer day, but never too light, this one comes recommended.

This brew was served on tap at ButaPub in Rochester, New York. It arrived in Bell’s pint glasses, showing a thinned brown, taupe coloring, with watery lightness around the edges of the rim. A soft, frilly one finger head of mocha colored bubbles topped the liquid, but this retained only briefly. No haze or sediment was noted, and carbonation appeared to be moderate. The aroma gave notes of cold brassy, envelope adhesives, nail polish remover, sugary sweet cloying brown and caramel malts, red grape skins, sarsaparilla rootiness, watered coffee malt roast, plastic phenols, medical gauze, green twigs, and brown sugar simple syrup. The taste followed with equal simplicity, but with a renewed sense of robustness, carrying loads of lightly smoked brown and black malts, granular brown sugar sweetness, empty sugar packets, farm road dustiness, chalked mallow dustiness, ultrafiltered water (going beyond to the point of tasting chemically), wax paper, crushed vitamin c tablets, warming hazelnut, the lightest peppery booziness, and Band-Aid phenols. The body was light to touch, and the carbonation was as well. Slurp, smack, cream, froth, and pop were all light, and only peripherally contributory. The mouth was left coated with a stained, steely film. The abv was appropriate, and drinkability was fine.

Overall, this is your simple and easy brown ale. It’s only a stretch up the thruway, so we feel safe enough calling this a “local” brew. For that, it is approachable, and versatile. This time of year, when the seasons truly begin to blend, you start looking for brews that are going to do you just as well, regardless of the time of day you walk into the bar. If it’s still a blazing hot afternoon, but you want something a bit darker, it is light enough to appease. If, several hours later, you’re ready to walk home through a brisker evening, it gives you enough sturdiness and warmth to see you on your way. Nothing through the profile is especially novel, but it ticks enough boxes to be pleasant enough all around.

Toasty, Crust, Nutty, Level

Very smooth, this Brown Ale smacks of nutty toasted malt. Clean, dry grassiness with some subtle balancing of hop bitterness and flavor make it quite the quaff. Medium bodied, we get loaf of bread on the palate, suggestions of unsweetened chocolate and brown bread as well. The brewers certainly nailed the style, although it would be difficult to pick this one out in a blind tasting when up against its counterparts.
