I have to say this is one of the best browns I have had hands down and Iam not even a huge fan of the style.Poured a deep brown with cirmson light showing thru the glass with a well retained almond colored 1/2 finger head,aromas are quite earthy with an underlyinh molasses note,flavors start out with just a light amount of sweetness like molasses and cocoa but a very big dry earthy raw nutty finish not subtle in its dry earthiness in the finish at all.A very food friendly brown ale not shy either in my opinion with its very dry in your face earthy finish,loved it.

Toasty, Crust, Nutty, Level

Very smooth, this Brown Ale smacks of nutty toasted malt. Clean, dry grassiness with some subtle balancing of hop bitterness and flavor make it quite the quaff. Medium bodied, we get loaf of bread on the palate, suggestions of unsweetened chocolate and brown bread as well. The brewers certainly nailed the style, although it would be difficult to pick this one out in a blind tasting when up against its counterparts.

Pours a medium to dark amber. Nice sticky off white head. Great nose of ripe oranges, mangos, barley and peppery spice. There's so much of a range in what brown ales can be, so it comes down to personal preference in declaring that "this is a nice brown ale," but this is exactly what I like my 'ideal' American brown ale to smell (my sample comes off much more like an American Brown Ale than a British-inspired version, given the ample, aromitc hop levels.) A fairly complex, layered aroma. Figs, grapefruits, and an almost licorice-like spice note. Nice medium body with a plentiful spiciness that is enhanced by the perfect level of carbonation, without ever growing too prickly on the palate. This is a nicely hopped brown ale as the hops bring both spice and citrusy notes, balancing the caramel and dark bread notes. Finishes with aromatic hoppy flourishes, moderate bitterness, impressions of plums and a nutty caramel quality. Overall, this beer is nicely fruited, but with a malty center and spicy edge.

12oz bottle at around cellar temp poured into pint glass. no freshness date. "brewed and bottled by the southern tier brewing company for the ellciottville brewing company" on the side of the bottle.

pours out a clear, deep brown color with reddish hughs in the light. big frothy slightly tan head with some decent lace and decent retention.

not a huge aroma, metallic malts mostly noticable. behind that i find some light chocolate, very lightly roasted/ toasted malts, caramel/ toffee, a decent hazlenut as it warms, and some light hops.

light semi watery mouthfeel. metallic lightly roasted malts, light chocolate, a bit of nuttiness, just a touch of spice and some decent hop bitterness. not much going on here.

as far as drinkability goes, its great and a cheap beer in the WNY region. just because this is one of my favorite local breweries keeps me coming back, if i never heard of this beer and had it, i prolly wouldnt recommend it.

Enjoyed this while I made my own brown ale from a Charlie Papazian recipe. Pours reddish brown with an off white head. Aroma is hops with a hint of chocolate. Medium mouthfeel and not too carbonated. Initial flavor is heavy on the hops which is surprising but then finishes with a nutty, coffee, chocolate which lingers. I enjoyed the subtlety of the main flavor but I suppose the hoppiness of the initial taste could be disappointing for some who are looking for a more traditional dark beer. This is the style of the brewery though as the Blueberry ale is a nice balanced flavor and not overpowering. This is a well crafted middle of the road beer that I would have again when I'm looking to have a few.

Ellicottville- Nut Brown

A- Deep dark amber brown with a small heavy lacing head.
S- Light hints of vanilla, toasted chocolate malt, oak, and charcoal.
T- Sweet toasted vanilla malt. Lightly burnt ash/ charcoal/ oak chips with creamy milk chocolate. Good thick maltiness.
M- Sweet and malty. Thick and sweet body with a dry lightly burnt ashy finish.

Overall- My favorite of the Ellicottville beers I've had. A good sessionable beer. Nice and smooth.

On tap at Mr. Goodbar's. Big brown sweetness with some spice. Not necessary but I just like to have a beer here. Reddish brown colour, only a whisp of head. Toated caramel, some burnt sugar. Medium mouthfeel, carbonation right there. Not greatly drinkable.

Pours a deep, copper-amber with 1/2" of thick, dense, foamy head that has good retention. The nose is faint caramel, nutty malt. The taste is light caramel malt but little else. The mouthfeel is light to medium bodied, smooth, and well carbonated.

In my opinion a fuller body and a heavier malt content would have gone a long way to improve this one. It was OK.

Pours clear brown with a couple fingers of fluffy beige head.

A biscuity smell with a peppery hop presence.

Mostly just a peppery hop taste as well.

The feel is complex, with several things going on. Initially, there is a sweetness, but it's drowned out by an earthy bitter finish, with the hops noticeable well into the swallow.

This ale gives good lacing. It has a nice feel and goes down pretty easy.

Picked up a single at the Party Source in Syracuse. Appears brown with no head. The aroma has a deep chocolate barley, not too bad. This beer opens with a great big dark toast flavor, but it all quickly fades leaving only a slight vegetable taste. Is this beer old? Probably not. Maybe over-attenuated in an effort to make this beer light? It's also a touch too sharp and crisp. This beer needs to mellow out a bit. Aside from that great roasted malt flavor, this beer really has some issues. I'd avoid it and if you're in NY, get Ithaca's Nut Brown instead.

A - a thick, syrupy and very flat brew pours from the bottle. Some carbonation rises to the top forming a small off white head. What does form sticks to the side of the glass

S - Sweet malt and syrupy. A bit of sour milk

T/M - slight nuttiness with a hint of smoke at the end. Sweet and smooth. A slight creaminess to the texture. Wet finish.

D - Goes down nicely. If it looked better it would be a top notch brew.

I am not a huge Nut Brown fan but this one is pretty darn good. I think this could be distributed on a larger level, but Ellicottville keeps it pretty local.

I would say this is a must with their blueberry beer when you visit the brewpub. I wish I could get this around my house and not have to make the trip tp NY for it.

A: Poured a translucent medium dark apple-amber with a 1 finger frumpy and frothy sandstone colored head that was moderately lasting. Afterwards a thin skim covering sits well on top for the remainder of the drink. Visible carbonation was medium at first and sporadic, before softening to a lazy and slow display.

S: The nose was rich with a deep dried caramel malting and a big roasted nuttiness (almonds). There was a big fresh milky chocolate nature when you took a deep inhale, while hints of dried bakers chocolate were present upon shorter sniffs. Light hints of earthy woody tones and dried vegetation are also present.

T: The flavor had a big whipped warm chocolate and fresh nuttiness first grabbing the taste buds. Some dried coffee beans and an earthy bitterness soon follows in the middle of the palate. The coffee beans become more dominant along with bittering chocolate as the drink progresses. The palate was malty with a touch of booziness (rum), and caramelized sugar sweetness along with warm apples, and licorice. The finish finds a good lacing of burnt coffee lingering about.

M: fizzy, creamy and whipped with a medium consistency. Warming, boozy with a nice creaminess.

D: A good example, a hearty nut brown with a warm roasted and boozy nature that is sure to please. Fulfilling at only two servings.

Only my second offering from this brewery but again I liked it.

A - Decent pour for a brown ale. It's brown and has a nice tan colored head with some slightly sticky lacing.

S - Wow that is pretty good. Brown malts, cashews and pecans covered in caramel.

T - I really like how they didn't load this beer with brown malt. This resulted in a very drinkable beer with slight cashews and walnuts and a smooth creamy sweet caramel finish.

M - Light to medium pretty on par with the style.

Overall if found again I would get it again. It's right up next to Samuel Smith's version and I liked the sweetness. Good beer.

Came with the Beer of the Month Club.

Pours clear reddish brown with a 1 finger creamy tan head, with decent lacing.

Smells of nut, sweet roasted malt, caramel, citrus, floral hops and yeast.

Tastes of sweet malt, roasted grains, caramel, lemon, orange peel, nut, brown sugar, syrup, floral hops, vanilla, biscuit, pepper and spices; the nut flavor makes a nice appearance up front but the hops dominate the finish and leave a spicy mix with the sweet malt and roasted grains, making for a dry bitter finish; overall it's a pretty tasty beer.

Mouthfeel is light, crisp and on the smooth side, with medium carbonation and medium body. Feels lighter than it actually is.

Even though this beer has some spicy and citrus zest, it's highly drinkable and quite enjoyable; it's a very good beer that's well balanced with a real nice combo of malts, hops and grains to give it body, flavor and drinking appeal.

A recent BOTMC arrival, let's give it a whirl. Popping the top yields an arid hoppy smell with hints of molasses and brown sugar. Pours to an orangeish root beer colour with a light tan head made up of medium sized bubbles. Taste is consistent with smell, good malt backbone, slightly roasted, well balanced with sme dry bitter hops. Carbonation seems slightly high but burns off fast. This brew has a distinct American twist to the bitterness as it is not quite as unpronounced as it would be in an actual English ale. There is some nutiness also as one would expect from the name, I detect hints of roasted macadamias and of course some roasted chestnuts. A tasty selection, BOTMC is improving its selections.

Pours ruby brown - on the light side - with a thin bubbly head that doesn't quite last the duration. Scant remnants of lacing stick.

The smell is of cocoa powder with some light toast.

The taste is of roast - slightly burnt with a metallic herbal bitterness (that masks maltiness). It has some cocoa, and a touch of alcohol. Something a bit raw about it. The cocoa is a bit too little, too late, and the toffee is barely perceptible. Didn't really catch "nut" character. A bit too bitter for the style.

It's too fizzy/gassy, though there is a body that approaches, if it doesn't quite hit, medium.

Not a fan of general thinness, lack of malt complexity and the overriding herbal/metallic bitterness here. Still, it drinks surprisingly well for a beer that I didn't quite enjoy.

12oz bottle purchased at either Party Source or Brilbeck's, Syracuse, NY.

Short fill bottle, just to bottom of neck. Poured into an imperial pint glass, formed a skim of tan froth over the clear brown brew. Uneven layer of swirliness lasts, with average lacing. Aroma is malty and nutty. Taste follows along, nutty sweet upfront, a bit tart in the middle, and a slight musty hops close. Mouthfeel is a bit undercarbonated, and drinkability is okay as well. Not something I'd go out of my way to get again.

This is a solid beer, definately above average. I've tried some, but not all of the beers by this brewery and this is my favorite. I'm not even really a "nut-brown" kind of guy, but this is really good. It should be noted that I had this beer at the new location in Fredonia, NY (also on BeerFly). Appears a nice sturdy brown, like a dark cabinet wood with an ample inch of light brown head, nice retention. Smell and taste are loaded with bitter burnt malts, a nutty character, some light molasses, and a nice backing of piney hops. Interesting combo. More bitter than most browns, though it also has some sweet chocolaty coffee characteristics. If you make it to the brewery I think this should probably be first on the list of things to try. Enjoy.

Reviewed from notes as I drank this a few weeks ago now. Got a 6 pack of this from a beverage store in Olean NY when I went to go visit my girlfriend there a few weeks ago. Poured into my pint glass. This beer pours a clear, deep dark red.brown color. Off white head an inch thick when poured, settles to a decent surface coating and nice ring lining the inside of the glass with good lacing. Aromas of sweet malty caramel and roasted nut, rounded out with a bit of spice (cinnamon perhaps?). The taste is pretty much the same nice roasted nut and malty caramel sweetness with a hint of chocolate and spice, rounded out with a touch of bittering hops at teh end. Good balance of flavors, the hops do tned to come out a bit more as the beer warms up a bit. Has a crisp, smooth, and frothy, medium to full bodied carbonation with moderate carbonation. Easy to drink in a good way. I really enjoyed this. The winning this beer does!
