Picked this up a few weeks back in Totowa, having never had this before. It looked interesting and a good alternative to the heavier Stouts and Porters that fill up the shelves this time of the year and I was really surprised with how rich this was without being too strong or overtly heavy. This was so tasty that it put Ellicottville on the map for me and would easily be worth getting again should it still be in stock next time I make a run!

This had a dark brown pour to it with a full, tan head that had a lot more carbonation then the beer itself did. This looked rich and tasted even richer as the aroma was that of dark chocolate, some powder, and sour cherries lacking in any sweetness or artificiality. Certainly a chocolate bomb from start to finish with a nice warming feel to it and a bit of chocolate and mild, earthy hop bitterness in the back. There was a hint of syrup in the aftertaste too as this left a coating on my mouth, although that wasn't a detraction at all. Nice and full, this never turned into the Russian Imperial Stout that I was expecting.

That's because the alcohol was just at the right amount and this never looked, poured, or felt like "motor oil". A great Stout that calls for a new style to be created, as this is the epitome of what a "Chocolate Stout" should be. Sensual and ever-so-slightly warming, this was a beer that calls for a Nitro pour because due to the silky consistency of it. Fun stuff that could be enjoyed year-round!

This poured lovely and with a good head of tan foam that lasted. The nose is lush with fudgey chocolate and some roast. the scent of cherries is an earthy sweet scent that is not terribly loud but it is there. Drinks smooth and rich with lots of chocolate and not so much cherry on the palate. Again that cherry is the deep earthy sweetness int he beer. tastes a lot like a liquid tootsie roll. Finishes full and smooth like a milkshake. The body in this beer alone plus the chocolate is the reason why people drink a stout.

I tried this on tap at Peachtree Family Restaurant

The appearance is okay -black opaque but no head retention with faint brown hue at the base of the glass. The smell is fruity with slight dark cherry and slight roasted aroma. The feel is tangy with lots of cherry acidity up front with mild roast and semi-sweet body with light feel for the style.

The taste is more cherry than chocolate with slight cocoa flavor after the dark cherry quality recedes a little bit sweet in the taste with mild roasted character and semi-dry as it finishes with subtle alcohol. Overall I thought this was okay and nothing to detract from this except perhaps it could use more roast character and lacks head retention -worth a try.

Sampling a 12 oz bottle at cellar temp and poured into a snifter.
The beer pours a dark cola brown with fizzy tan head of only 1 cm that fades very quickly to nothing but a little wispy island that is gone almost as fast.
Aroma is some sweet chocolate and a bit of roasted malt, dont really get any cherries here.
Booze is covered on the nose too.
First sip is a velvety smooth body with very fine and tingly carbonation. Body is actually a little thinner than I anticipated from the label and description.
Flavor is sweet chocolate, like chocolate milk taste and hints of roasted malt. I do get some sweet cherry notes that remind me of a cherry cordial candy.
The booze is not present here either and makes for a very enjoyable and drinkable beer.
The body could be a little thicker but otherwise this is a winner.
