Blueberry Wheat BeerBlueberry Wheat Beer
Notes: A refreshing beer any time of the year! A light golden brew that starts out with Canadian 2 row barley, White wheat, and noble German Hops. Then we add just the right amount of blueberry to give a great flavor and aroma.

A great beer with a modest head and great grain flavor. Wheat beer usually are not head and this beer follows that general pattern. This is a great beer and should be sampled by anyone liking lighter beer.

One-finger head from the tap, clear, light gold color with a subtle blue hue, fresh blueberry smell, little lacing, light tasting wheat beer, somewhat watery mouthfeel and taste. I probably would never order one again.

Pours clear, gold in color with 1/4 inch head. Taste is blueberries and grain. Light bodied, moderate carbonation, and sweet. Nice middle of the road blueberry beer. Refreshing, but nothing I would rush out for.

Ellicottville Brewing Co. "Blueberry Wheat Ale"
12 fl. oz brown glass bottle, "BOTTLED ON 09/14/17 B235 11:00" and sampled on 04/08/18
$1.83 @ Cherry Hill Liquor, Wine & Beer (Wegmans), Cherry Hill, NJ

Notes via stream of consciousness: So this is a "malt beverage"? What makes it that? And it says "...brewed with blueberries" so does that mean there's nothing "artificial" about it? No extracts or "natural flavoring"? Hmmmm, I kind of doubt that, but whatever. It's just too golden to have had real blueberries in it, they turn it kind of pink, and the aroma is quite bright. I call bullshit, this is made with extract and no real blueberries - or, at the very least, just a few tossed in. Moving forward, it's somewhat hazy and yellow-gold beneath a short head of white - which has already dropped, so right off the bat the head retention isn't very good. There's no lacing either. The aroma is artificial in my opinion, and it's not like I don't have experience brewing these beers professionally. With that said, I don't mind it, but there's no real fruit there either. The flavor is sweetish with a straightforward golden/wheat malt and I wonder why it's labeled a "malt beverage". Are there not enough hops to call it a beer? That I can believe, but why would they not just lie about that as well if they're already going to lie about the blueberries? A TTB audit would show the lack of blueberries immediately but they'd have to dig around and do some math to find the missing amount of hops. Anyway, back on track, it sweet with golden malt, blueberry flavor, and no hop flavor. It's not that sweet though, and although the malt lingers in the finish it's far from cloying. The moderate carbonation helps with that a little bit, but for the most part it's soft and smooth with a medium body. At 4.8% ABV with this much residual body and sugar they're definitely going for that, mashing fairly high. Which also points to the use of flavorings. It would take a fair amount of real fruit to get the amount of flavor they've got here, and that has to be fermented out (or sterile filtered) or you get exploding bottles, and that would raise the ABV by a fair amount. With all of that aside, it still works. It's very much like so many other blueberry ales that have come and gone over the past 20 years or so. It's a pleasant and easy to drink beer for spring, summer, and warm fall days. I think there are better versions out there but I'd certainly buy this again. Worth trying.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a Dogfish Head tulip

L: Clear light golden pour with 2 fingers of fizzy white head. Falls fast... solid lacing.

S: Simple but fragrant... strong blueberry and fruit.

T/F: Light grains.. surprisingly crisp. Blueberry present with mild sweetness but not overpowering as expected from the smell. Not unpleasant which is a surprise as I don't usually care much for blueberry brews. Mild hopping for bitterness. Fizzy carbonation... clean... no off flavors. The finish is blueberry and grains.

O: A rather pleasant blueberry beer. Nothing all that special, but also not bad. One I'd revisit on a summer day. Light enough to drink a lot of it.

A: Light color w/one finger head. Very light lacing.
S: Blueberries upfront but not overpowered
T: Of course Blueberries, then some faint sweetness.
F: Very good carbonation and light feeling in the mouth.
O: For a fruit designated beer, it is what it is... Blueberry's. It does a good job for a refreshing mid Summer porch beer.

6 pack of 12 oz bottles purchased from the brewery. No age statement on the bottles or the packaging as far as I could tell.

L: Pours light gold with a quarter-inch of white head.

S: Blueberries...duh. Nothing else really going on but it's a pleasant smell nonetheless.

T: Malt sweetness with blueberry in the finish. Again pretty simple, not getting the complexities typical of a wheat beer which is a bit of a bummer. However the blueberry taste is very nice, it's not overpowering and it doesn't taste artificial.

F: Light body with a good amount of carbonation. Crisp, dry finish that offsets the blueberry sweetness.

O: Not really what I look for in a wheat beer but this is a well made, light and refreshing blueberry beer. I could see someone who is typically not a beer fan enjoying this. Try it on tap at the brewery where it's served with fresh blueberries.

Thin bodied, lacks the cloudiness I expected from a wheat beer. Not over powered by the blueberry flavor. Served with blueberries in the glass at the brewery, so that's cool. I usually hate fruit beers, but this one isn't bad.

ELLICOTTVILLE BLUEBERRY WHEAT 10/18/15

Purchased a bottle in a mixed six while on vacation in NY state, because it's not available in my state and my wife likes blueberry flavored anything. I split it with her and ended up drinking almost all of it when she passed after the first sip.

Bottled August 5th 2015. Poured from the 12 oz. bottle into a plastic cup (on travel and forgot glass).

a: Clear dark gold/amber with a finger and a half thick white head which receded to thick surface foam and dense lacing.

s: Virtually none, maybe slight light fruit.

t: Thick bready malt with a mild hop bite and a light blueberry aftertaste.

m: Medium great body and carbonation tingle.

o: A "meaty" wheat beer in which the tasty malt dominates the blueberry notes. May not satisfy those looking for a lot of fruit flavor (wife disliked it), but a quality and satisfying harvest grain brew.

Blueberry beers seem to be a dieing trend these days. A few years ago I could easily nab 7-10, and now I only spied 3. I savor blueberries during the summer and love picking berries along the trail to bake with. This beer has nothing artificially blueberry about it. It also has a strong, crackery wheat body giving it a very dry feel, which can overwhelm the natural sweetness of the blueberries. Speaking of which, the sweet berry flavor definitely seems to outpace the tart while some berry tannin funk lasts persists. The beer tastes like a superior AAL upfront with the kicker of blueberry. Approachable, squashable, and passable when you have a sudden hankering for blueberries and beer.

A refreshing crisp light wheat beer with a perfect hint of blueberry without the fake artificial blueberry taste. Pours a bit golden with a nice white head. Had at dinosaur BBQ served with a few fresh blueberries. Very refreshing wheat beer.

A: [4.50] Clear pale straw color. Very few bubbles in the glass. The head dissipated right away and left wisps of foam on the surface. The beer is 4.8% ABV and bottled on 11.03.14.

S: [3.25] I am not getting much blueberry on the nose. I get mostly wheat smells.

T: [3.50] The taste is really nice. A nice sweet wheat beer taste. Nice bready taste. then just a suggestion of blueberry. The blueberry is not dramatic or overpowering. Very subtle.

M: [3.75] The label says "Dry and Fruity" - I agree. Nice crisp dry finish. Nice carbonation level.

O: [3.50] This one has been rattling around for a while in the fridge. I have been passing it over for a while - but I was pleasantly surprised. It is a well made beer that doesn't try to over do it with the blueberry. This would be ideal out on a dock int he summer.

A: The beer is clear yellow in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a quarter finger high white head that quickly died down, leaving only a thin collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Strong aromas of blueberries are present in the nose. The smell was so strong that I could pick up the blueberries as soon as the cap was removed off the bottle.
T: Similar to the smell, the taste has lots of flavors of blueberries with hints of associated sweetness. Notes of wheat are noticeable in the finish.
M: It feels light-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is very easy to drink and has lots of nice aromas and flavors of blueberries that don't seem artificial – it's kind of like dipping into the blueberries at the bottom of a cup of yogurt before mixing them in. However, the strong dose of blueberries can make the taste seem a little one-dimensional.

Ellicottville Blueberry Wheat Ale

Aroma: Light bright crackery aroma up front. Light bread crust notes with low berry character. Fermentation character is clean and dry.

Appearance: Pale yellow slightly hazy pour with a low bright white head.

Flavor: Pleasant mix of blueberries with some crusty bread –like notes. It reminds me of taking a bite of blueberry pie! There is an underlying earthy bitterness to balance out the fruit and malt character. Finish is clean and dry. There is a slight sourdough aftertaste that is pleasant and adds depth of character.

Mouthfeel: Light bodied with high carbonation. A slight carbonic bite is noted. There is no alcohol heat or astringency detected.

Overall impression: A refreshing, clean fruit beer. There is enough base beer character to enjoy it with light fruit accents that keep things unique and interesting. Well done!

Light straw/golden in color with a slight haze, this beer produces a very slight head of foam that fizzes into nothing in minutes. The nose on this beer is fruit/berry- like with a sweet wheat malt backing.

This beer offers a mild flavor of wheat and blueberries. The blueberry flavor is moderate and it does taste natural, which is good. The wheat malt backbone isn’t very strong, but it’s sufficient and it keeps the blueberries in check. There is little in the way of hop character, but this is expected for a style such as this.

I have to admit this is a very refreshing beer and it makes a good summertime drinking option. I would prefer a little more body and a little nicer appearance, but this beer is still good for what it is. It’s the type of beer that will go over well with the shandy crowd and others who like their beer to taste a little sweeter and more approachable. Some added blueberries would actually improve this beer but it’s still pretty good on its own.

Appearance - Very light colored beer. Somewhat hazy with a very full white 1/2 inch head. Nice lacing.

Smell - First thing that strikes you is the strong fruity smell of blueberry. Then the malt and the hops aroma blends in well.

Taste - Very balanced with nice malt, citrusy hops and a very refreshing blueberry flavor - not artificial at all.

Mouthfeel - Light and refreshing to the pallet.

Overall this is a great summer sippin on the deck beer. At EBC, they serve with fresh blueberries in the beer, so we have taken to doing this at our home as well. This is really, the only fruit beer that I enjoy.

Serving type: Fresh on tap at EBC and bottle

Poured from bottle into a pint glass

Appearance – The beer pours a clear golden-yellow color with a two finger fluffy white head. The head fades relatively quickly leaving a lighter level of lace on the sides of the glass.

Smell – The aroma is heaviest of a blueberry nature mixed with some grainy wheat aromas. The blueberry is quite potent, but not overly sweet and has a nice almost drier smell as there are only lighter notes of a more caramel and sugary sweetness.

Taste – The taste begins with a flavor of a light wheat and blueberry flavor. The nose is heavier then the taste however, with the flavors being relatively subdued in comparison to the smell. The blueberry gives way with the wheat growing slightly stronger as the taste moved on from the beginning to the end. All the while a lighter sugary sweet taste that is upfront fades to the end with a slight bit of acidic and light bitter flavor comes to the tongue at the end of the taste leaving a dry blueberry wheat taste to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is very light and crisp with a carbonation level that is on the higher side. Both are quite nice for the blueberry and wheat flavors of the brew and make for a refreshing style brew.

Overall – This would be a nice beer for a hot summer day as it is light, fruity and refreshing. Other then on a warm day in summer however this is one I would not go to on any great occasion as it is a little lacing in the flavor department.

Pours a clean pale yellow color with a small white head. In the aroma, fresh blueberries all day. In the taste, fresh dry blueberries, almost like a blueberry muffin. A small bite and a medium to lighter bodied mouthfeel, with a note of dry blueberry skin in the aftertaste. Fresh blueberries and not sugary at all. Quite nice.

12 oz bottle courtesy of Cuzco pours a slightly hazed, light yellow color with a small cap of white head. Not much for retention or lacing.

Nose is very sweet, and I am guessing here, artificial blueberry aroma. This has to have some sort of extract in it...I am not one to hate on artificial flavors, so in this case it smells good, though a little like Fruity Pebbles.

Taste is not as sweet as the nose would indicate, but tastes like what I imagine an "essence of blueberry" would be. The malts are light and barely even qualify as grainy...maybe a light wheat tang. Not bad, but is a fairly forgettable fruit wheat beer.

A - Hazy yellow with a white one finger head that disappears as fast as it comes, no lacing at all.

S - Blueberries that have been soaking in water for a few hours, not saying the smell is bad its just not too good.

A - A very clear hazy yellow very light beer looking. Head is fairly decent at a half an inch that turns to a nice lace ring.

S - Hmmm smells kind of artificial but very sweet. A few sniffs later I can actually detect a good malt bill and some hops.

T - Tart and kind of acidic but very balanced. I get light blueberry taste then some decent citrus hops followed by a light malt flavor.

M - Light and bubbly it's not bad.

Overall one of the better fruit beers I have drank with constant fruit flavors, hops, and a bubbly bit of carbonation. Not bad at all.

I picked a six of these up when our ski bus stopped at a grocery store in Ellicottville. This was a great refreshing beer after a hard day of skiing and several stronger beers earlier in the day. It is a pretty subtle, well balanced taste that I think is mostly designed for easy drinking. The fruit taste is subtle, but so are the hops, malt and yeast tastes,so it works.

The appearance is that of a flat, light beer. A pale yellow.

But even though I usually prefer bolder tastes, this one gets a thumbs up for what it is. I think they met their goals admirably

Pours a clear, golden color with a lot of carbonation. A medium white head thins out very quickly, however the lacing throughout the drink is very good.
Smell has a slight bit of wheat, but an awesome amount of blueberry. The strong smell of blueberry smells so genuine and fresh that you would think you are actually smelling a bushel of blueberries. (Do blueberries come in bushels?)
Taste is good for a blueberry beer. There is a lot of blueberry taste and not much else on that. However, the blueberries do taste very authentic, like they use real blueberries.
Mouthfeel is really good for a blueberry beer. This is obviously a summer choice, so the fact that the beer has a very light feel and a crisp, refreshing bite makes the mouthfeel perfect for the season.
Drinkability is good. The genuine blueberry taste is strong at first, however it balances out with the wheat fairly nicely as you continue to drink. A great selection for a hot summer day on a patio in upstate New York!

Cuzco sent me two of these a while back... I drank one and couldn't bring myself to crack the other one... Here's why:

This looks and pours like a BMC adjunt lager. Clear gold and fizzy. There is a little yeast at the end that turns the glass slightly cloudy, but it is just barely so. Weak retention. No lacing.
Smells weak. Very bland. Some light notes of blueberries remind me of frozen blueberries. Just barely a hint of wheat...

Taste is extremely watery. The body is thin. Not really wheaty or blueberry, so it is a total failure in terms of living up to its name.

Overall, this is not much better than a BMC lager, and as a result, the only people I see being impressed by this are those people that are just crossing over to craft.

Ellicottville Blueberry Wheat Beer is a crystal clear, pale straw colored beer with a small white head that quickly fades to a thin white blotch. It has an aroma of blueberry bubblegum. Lemon and wheat tones lie underneath. It smells a little artificial, but it's ok. It's light bodied and metallic with a slightly gritty finish. There's not that much blueberry flavor, really. It almost seems a touch salty. There's a noticeable amount of green bitterness to it, especially at the finish. The bitterness hangs for a while after the swallow. It's quite light and doesn't have a lot of personality, but it could make for a pretty good lawn mower beer.
