Blueberry Wheat BeerBlueberry Wheat Beer
Notes: A refreshing beer any time of the year! A light golden brew that starts out with Canadian 2 row barley, White wheat, and noble German Hops. Then we add just the right amount of blueberry to give a great flavor and aroma.

One-finger head from the tap, clear, light gold color with a subtle blue hue, fresh blueberry smell, little lacing, light tasting wheat beer, somewhat watery mouthfeel and taste. I probably would never order one again.

A: Light color w/one finger head. Very light lacing.
S: Blueberries upfront but not overpowered
T: Of course Blueberries, then some faint sweetness.
F: Very good carbonation and light feeling in the mouth.
O: For a fruit designated beer, it is what it is... Blueberry's. It does a good job for a refreshing mid Summer porch beer.

Had this on tap at a local watering hole on special for a $1.50 so I took a stab and was pleasantly suprised.Poured a hazed straw with a well formed sticky white head, aromas were more wehat than blueberry but the blueberry was there but not overdone like many of the style are.A nice wheat base to this beer with fresh blueberries coming in to refresh in the a lingering finish. Now these beers are my thing but I could see myself drinking these in the summer.

Average gold color, almost no foam even upon initial pour.

Blueberry and grainy wheat aroma, cereal notes.

Flavor is slightly sour, has a fruit pectin quality and a blueberry skin note. Light body and mild carbonation make this an easy drinker.

A solid choice if you like blueberries and want a beer that isn't over the top with sweetness or fruit flavor.

On draught at Gallo’s Tap Room in Columbus. The beer is a clear bright yellow color with a thin white head that dissapears quickly. Spotty lacing. The aroma is wheat and blueberries. Light body with mild sweet blueberry, wheat and grain flavors. Flavor starts off alright but there is a definite off flavor of soap and metal here and there. The finish is sweet blueberry with a touch of hops. Slightly below average overall.

Ellicottville Brewing Co. "Blueberry Wheat Ale"
12 fl. oz brown glass bottle, "BOTTLED ON 09/14/17 B235 11:00" and sampled on 04/08/18
$1.83 @ Cherry Hill Liquor, Wine & Beer (Wegmans), Cherry Hill, NJ

Notes via stream of consciousness: So this is a "malt beverage"? What makes it that? And it says "...brewed with blueberries" so does that mean there's nothing "artificial" about it? No extracts or "natural flavoring"? Hmmmm, I kind of doubt that, but whatever. It's just too golden to have had real blueberries in it, they turn it kind of pink, and the aroma is quite bright. I call bullshit, this is made with extract and no real blueberries - or, at the very least, just a few tossed in. Moving forward, it's somewhat hazy and yellow-gold beneath a short head of white - which has already dropped, so right off the bat the head retention isn't very good. There's no lacing either. The aroma is artificial in my opinion, and it's not like I don't have experience brewing these beers professionally. With that said, I don't mind it, but there's no real fruit there either. The flavor is sweetish with a straightforward golden/wheat malt and I wonder why it's labeled a "malt beverage". Are there not enough hops to call it a beer? That I can believe, but why would they not just lie about that as well if they're already going to lie about the blueberries? A TTB audit would show the lack of blueberries immediately but they'd have to dig around and do some math to find the missing amount of hops. Anyway, back on track, it sweet with golden malt, blueberry flavor, and no hop flavor. It's not that sweet though, and although the malt lingers in the finish it's far from cloying. The moderate carbonation helps with that a little bit, but for the most part it's soft and smooth with a medium body. At 4.8% ABV with this much residual body and sugar they're definitely going for that, mashing fairly high. Which also points to the use of flavorings. It would take a fair amount of real fruit to get the amount of flavor they've got here, and that has to be fermented out (or sterile filtered) or you get exploding bottles, and that would raise the ABV by a fair amount. With all of that aside, it still works. It's very much like so many other blueberry ales that have come and gone over the past 20 years or so. It's a pleasant and easy to drink beer for spring, summer, and warm fall days. I think there are better versions out there but I'd certainly buy this again. Worth trying.

A very nice addition to the menu is this blueberry wheat from Ellicottville Brewery.
This brew was a very hazy golden with thin pinkish hilights with a limited head and carbonation.
The nose has a nice semi sour blueberry scent.
The taste is refreshing, well balanced ending to the hops from a light malt like start.
The body a medium/light.

Appearance: pours a clear golden yellow color with a short one finger head. Some mild lacing develops.

Smell: loads of blueberry with some softer wheat tones. Very pleasant for a fruit beer.

Taste: the blueberry flavor dominates here and drowns out any other flavors. Some soft grass and wheat tones are in the background and bitterness is very mild.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied. Crisp throughout with some dryness late. Aftertaste is focused on the blueberry flavors.

Drinkability: this beer is a bit unbalanced and more than one glass would be tough to handle in a session.

The beer pours a pale gold color with a thick frothy white head that quickly fades to lacing. The aroma is average. It has a light pale and wheat malt scent that is a bit dry and grainy. It also has a mild blueberry essence aroma. The taste is average as well. It has a light wheat malt flavor that goes down easy and finishes quite dry with a light blueberry finish. The mouthfeel is light with adequate carbonation. This is an easy drinking beer for those hot summer days, but that's it. There are many more fruit beers I'd rather have.

Bottle courtesy of Hogtownharry: Poured a light yellow color beer with a small pure white bubbly head with no retention or lacing. Aroma of blueberry syrup is pretty gross with some faint wheat also noticeable. Taste is totally gross with too much bad blueberry syrup (shouldn’t blueberry beer be blue instead of golden yellow?) and some weak wheat with a big watery finish. I am usually quite fond of fruit beer but I had to pour this one down the drain.

Ellicottville- Blueberry Wheat

A- Bright clear yellow with a small foamy white head. Soapy lacing.
S- Light sweet wheat with faint blueberries.
T- Sweet blueberries and sweet sugary wheat. Grassy hop bite.
M- Light and sweet. Fruity sweet body with sweet wheat and malt. Mild dry grassy hop finish.

Overall- Not bad for a fruity summer beer. 1's enough for me though.

Minimally hazy maize with a sparkling appearance due to a generous amount of carbonation. The pearl colored cap is currently filling more than half the glass after what I thought was a controlled pour. It's on the poofy, airy side, but still manages to leave a few clumps of suds behind.

The nose is classic for the 'blueberry wheat' style. I smelled lots of fresh berries on crown cracking and have been enjoying the aroma over the past several minutes, even though the glass is more than a foot away. Any blueberry beer that smells this much like bursting berries is okay by me.

I'm not so thrilled with the flavor. My first impression is that Blue Berry Wheat tastes like a fruit beer than was cut with tonic water and a dash of bitters. I like beer of this style to have a little sweetness to go along with the fruit. Absent that, it shouldn't be as bitter as your average 80 IBU IPA (without the hop flavor that makes the bitterness worthwhile).

The unfortunate thing is that there's a decent amount of good blueberry flavor trying to fight through the less than pleasant characteristics. I can't think of anything (other than hops) that would impart such a quinine-like bitterness, but something major needs to be changed before BBW can be considered average. Since Southern Tier is the contract brewer, I'd suggest having their guys tweak the recipe.

The mouthfeel is light (perhaps too much so) and is too bubbled. Maybe this was a bad batch, who knows? Things are settling down somewhat as I enter the bottom of the bottle, but the word 'fizzy' still applies.

Ellicottville Brewing Company Blue Berry Wheat falls well short of most similar offerings that I've had in the past. I would have thought that Southern Tier could work their usual magic, but there's nothing the least bit magical to be found in this bottle. I'd suggest passing this one by.

Poured a nice gold with a decent head. Clean aroma of wheat and a huge blast of blueberry. The blueberry flavor is pretty nice, and while it is certainly strong its not too strong as long your not a hater of sweet fruit beers. There is a nice wheat base to it. Mouthfeel is moderate to light.
Very drinkable and refreshing. One of the better fruit beers ive had.

Ellicottville Blueberry Wheat Ale

Aroma: Light bright crackery aroma up front. Light bread crust notes with low berry character. Fermentation character is clean and dry.

Appearance: Pale yellow slightly hazy pour with a low bright white head.

Flavor: Pleasant mix of blueberries with some crusty bread –like notes. It reminds me of taking a bite of blueberry pie! There is an underlying earthy bitterness to balance out the fruit and malt character. Finish is clean and dry. There is a slight sourdough aftertaste that is pleasant and adds depth of character.

Mouthfeel: Light bodied with high carbonation. A slight carbonic bite is noted. There is no alcohol heat or astringency detected.

Overall impression: A refreshing, clean fruit beer. There is enough base beer character to enjoy it with light fruit accents that keep things unique and interesting. Well done!

A - a nice golden straw color with ample bubbles rising to the surface adding to a nice white head.

S - berries are very much in the foreground in the aroma and not much else is discernible.

T- a nice surprise as the berries are there but the is much more evident including a nice malt backbone accompanied by some light hop traces.

M- very clean and carbonated; nice overall feel

D - on a hot summer day with an abundance of cold blueberry wheat; I could do some damage. every once in a while the berries seem to be a bit much but overall a very drinkable summer beer,

I picked this up at the Pit Stop in Nelsonville, OH.

Appearance: gold with a 3/4" white head that dissipates quickly; transparent
Smell: blueberries with a malty lager smell
Taste: blueberry mixed with a pale ale; little bit of banana flavor too
Mouthfeel: very thin :(
Drinkability: light and pleasant flavor so you could do two or three in a night

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a Dogfish Head tulip

L: Clear light golden pour with 2 fingers of fizzy white head. Falls fast... solid lacing.

S: Simple but fragrant... strong blueberry and fruit.

T/F: Light grains.. surprisingly crisp. Blueberry present with mild sweetness but not overpowering as expected from the smell. Not unpleasant which is a surprise as I don't usually care much for blueberry brews. Mild hopping for bitterness. Fizzy carbonation... clean... no off flavors. The finish is blueberry and grains.

O: A rather pleasant blueberry beer. Nothing all that special, but also not bad. One I'd revisit on a summer day. Light enough to drink a lot of it.

Picked this up on Ohio along with all the other beers on my HoF run last week. I never heard of this beer, or this brewery, and at $1.50 a bottle, I figured this was worth a shot. Thankfully, it was cheap, because a beer just doesn't get much more typical than this. Typical hue, smell, mouthfeel, and taste. Since it's winter, I'm used to darker brews with more filling during this time of the year, so this is quite a change for me!

As I said before, this is typical - a goldenrod hue, a bit of head, and no lacing to be seen. Carbonation is light and the taste is that of a pils with blueberry (obviously) with some straw and grass behind it for good measure. The backbone is malt, hence the reason why I feel like this is close to being a pils. Only a bit of sour bitterness can be felt in the aftertaste. This is relatively crisp and easyooing and if it was warm outside this week, I'm sure that this would be a fine beer to enjoy during a cookout and a ballgame on the radio.

I couldn't even feel the alcohol in this and to say that this is a session beer would be a gross overstatement. It would probably take quite a few of these in me before I could feel it, but that's alriight. Sometimes, ya need a beer that's not cheap nor complex. This is it and if I can find this when the warm weather returns, I'll give it another go.

Initial appearance for this was a little dissapointing. Rapidly dissipating head and very clear which I dislike in a wheat beer.

Smell was nice I found the blueberry in the background rather than the forefront like in othe fruit beers. I have to say my smell was off due to being quite stuffed up at the time.

Taste was interesting. Instead of being punched in the face with a blue berry taste you were greeted with a crisp slightly smoky taste with some nice hoppiness to it. I was very suprised and pleased to be able to taste the hops.

Mouthfeel was somewhat average. Not too watery like a macro but definitaly not what you would expect from craft beer.

Drinkability was excellent. I could have several of these at a sitting without getting tired of it. Like I said the blueberry didn't seem over the top which can hinder a fruit beers drinkability.

Pours hazed light golden with a white creamy head that thins. Strands of lacing stick.

The smell is of strong blueberries when the bottle opened. But, oddly enough, the blueberry is not as strong after the pour. Some breadiness gives it a bit of a blueberry pie aroma.

The taste of blueberries is not strong, but still dominates. Just a hint of tart. It does have an herbal bitterness that makes me wonder if they added more hops to make a firmer beer base, but it doesn't work so well, as it conflicts with the blueberry syrup character. There is a soapy character, as well, that I'm not fond of. It has a chalky dryness in the finish.

At first, I thought it had some creaminess, but as I drank more - second sip - the carbonation picked up to hit the fizzy level. Light bodied. All-in-all, though, about average for a light American fruit beer.

It's not too "artificial", as some others are, but it's still nothing I would desire again. The soapy character, though mild, did not help, and things seemed to conflict. Blueberry did repeat a bit after awhile. Different, but not too impressive.
