Bottled on 5-4-17. DFH Tulip.

A: pours a clear dark amber or reddish copper that initially struggles to form a head, but gets up a nice single finger of beige foam that recedes to clumps of large bubbles. Some wisps of carbonation.

S: love this. This is a classic American hop profile. Sweet with a muted, "dark" citrus. Not dank, just darker in tone and mood than the modern citrusy hops. Paired with loads of sweet, bready, crystal malt, this smells almost like a barleywine, which I love.

T: immediate sweet distinctly cascade citrus hoppiness, with a touch of alcohol. It is a dark, floral citrus in the first taste; unmistakably sweet. Sweet, thick, and bready on the mid palate, turning to a lingering floral dankness, with some lingering alcohol. The alcohol here is not hidden, but the beer does not seem to suffer for it.

M: heavier end of medium bodied, relatively low carbonation, and surprisingly clean finish. This, I suppose, is what stops this from being a barleywine. It is sweet and hella hoppy, but is not thick and syrupy, the way a barleywine would be.

O: if there is such a thing as an imperial pale ale, this would be it. Take a good APA, and make it 10% ABV with the volume turned up on the hops and malt accordingly, and you get this. If it were more available to me, I'd pick up a bottle or two of this annually. Reminds me of Bigfoot, and of Mt. Carmel Harvest. But the alcohol on this becomes more noticeable as you drink, to the point of becoming a little unpleasant at the end.

Appearance: pours a dark hazy orange color with a short 1/8" head that falls to some surface bubbles quickly.

Smell: malt sweetness and some alcohol come through to the nose.

Taste: big malt profile here. Some fruity sweetness in the background with earthiness, pungent bitterness, and a bit of alcohol.

Mouthfeel: heavy bodied beer. Light crispness to start, smooth and dry at the finish. Long lasting aftertaste.

Overall: a slow sipping big DIPA that leans towards big maltiness.

This is a massive imperial IPA that is more than adequately hopped but for my taste is was way too malty. There is a massive caramel/honey sweetness that is far too sweet.

A: [3.50] The bottle lists the ABV (10.6%). I could not find a date code. The beer is a darker mahogany color. It forms a finger of white head. The head has some nice staying power. The head also has good lacing and alcohol legs on the glass.

S: [3.75] Toffee, caramel, very mild lemon scent.

T: [4.00] Similar tot he nose (malt forward). I get toffee, pancake syrup, caramel. There is a mild touch of hop bitterness late. It is more of a feeling than a flavor.

M: [3.75] Nice rich body with lower carbonation. Overall this gives a hefty mouthfeel. It also has the previously mentioned late bitter feel.

O: [3.75] I think blindfolded I would not guess this was an IPA. It is very malt forward. The malts are front and center and the Cascade hops are far in the background. It is possible this is how this beer is designed - or it is possible that I have an old bottle. There is no way to tell. If this is the brewer's intention it is a well crafted beer. The malty flavors play really well together and the 10.6% ABV doesn't appear in the flavor anywhere. I'd like to have this again (and see if I could find a fresher bottle).

Before I review this beer I have to say that name for a high abv beer is perfect and spot on.

Appearance = Dark amber color and given the high abv an understandable small head of one finger.

Smell = I only get a malty smell of dark fruit. Do not notice any hops even though bottle says its dry hopped.

Taste = Not bad,but I would categorize it as a malt bomb. I actually like the taste even though I drink IPA's 90% of the time. No noticeable hops on the taste either. This is a sipper, but taste is pleasant enough.

Mouthfeel = Medium bodied not too carbonated

Overall = This is a tough one to rate. I do enjoy drinking it but cannot see me drinking this on a regular basis. I will keep the 2 beers left in the 4 pack for a winter warmer in 6 months.

Not gonna lie, the primary reason for me buying this beer at this time is the name. As far a double IPA goes, it's sweeter and maltier than I prefer my double IPA's to be but it pulls off this end of the spectrum pretty well. The alcohol content roastier bitter flavors make me think barleywine. Dense hops, lingering bitterness, some dark fruit flavors mixed with tropical fruit flavors.
High octane and aggressive. My first try at a brew from this brewery and I'm interested in trying more.

Imperial is a term that doesn't do justice here. This is a strong beer, and I suppose that's the point. It's too thick, too malty, too sweet and too bitter to be truly enjoyable. A sip is like chewing on raisins and pine cones. I guess it's not quite that bad, but this unlikely to ever be my first choice.

Poured into IPA glass. It pours a pretty amber red color with a thick, frothy, ecru-colored head and extensive lacing. Its primary smell is malt, along with caramel, grapefruit, and dark fruit. The initial taste is sweet malt with raisin, caramel, and bitter hops. It has a nice balance of sweet malt and hops. This ale is medium-bodied, lightly carbonated, and has a very noticeable 10.6% ABV. I generally like malty IPA's and this one didn't disappoint. While it seems to be rather polarizing with a wide variance of ratings, I enjoyed it and would drink it again.
