Sometimes barrel aging works out, sometimes it doesn't entirely. Wood can do strange things to beer, and not only the wood, but the bugs the wood can pick up. Add some whiskey into the mix and flavors can change greatly. In this case, the whiskey is light and doesn't take over the beer, which is nice, but there is just a touch of sourness from the barrel here that throws the beer off a bit. It's not infected nor ruined, but nevertheless, the flavor doesn't belong. Pours a very murky brown with a nice tan head and some slight lacing. Smells strongly of new wood and slightly medicinal and funky. The taste is better, with smoky notes, a touch of whiskey, a base of grainy maltiness, and a slightly sour finish. Smooth in the mouth, and not bad, but not magic either. I had this a while ago, and this is reviewed from notes. No new edition that I'm aware of.

Two barrel-aged beers were tapped after the re-opening of Twain's following a slight renovation to the brewing room. One was a Coffee stout and the other is this.
Pours a hazy brown color with a one-finger tan head. The head recedes into a thin layer on top leaving decent lacing.
Smells of bruised medium to dark fruits - raisins, pears, and hints of figs - with a good amount of bourbon and a hint of smokiness.
Tastes good. As with the smell fruit flavors are front and center, however they're a bit less crisp in the taste. There's also a good amount of bourbon present that gains steam as the beer warms. Light smoke flavors enter into things midway through the sip and a faint hint of brown banana flavors come in right before the end.
Mouthfeel is good. It has a nice thickness with moderate carbonation.
Drinkability is good. I finished my glass quickly and could have a few more.
Overall I was interested to see how a dunkel would hold up to barrel-aging and I was not disappointed. Tasty beer and worth a shot.
