Notes / Commercial Description:
The Troegenator has awoken! After hibernating for six months in bourbon barrels, we’re excited to report that Bourbon Barrel-Aged Troegenator is ready for release today at 11am. The barrel-aging process has transformed Troegenator into a lush Double Bock with undertones of vanilla, oak, and toasted coconut amid a warm blanket of tangy bourbon notes.

Gotta throw my review out there, since Troegenator was one of my first craft loves, and the new 16oz tall boys just kill. This one, well, I made the trip Allentown to Hershey, Mapquest said 1:13 I flated it in 1:04. The trip was the highlight. Bought 2, drank 1, couldnt wait to sell the other to a nice, young BA getting his beer at cost ...

It's a looker, ok aroma of caramel and whiskey barrel. Taste ok, caramel and whiskey, you can still taste the original which is good. Wasn't a big fan of the whiskey flavor. For my money, Weyerbacher Blasphemy is much better for $10 cheaper a bottle. Just another pricey beer that fails to deliver, but the buzz was good that snowy Sunday night. What day didn't it snow this year?

Bottle shared thanks to Maakun. Clear dark caramel pour with a thin tan head. Heavy bourbon smell, with vanilla, chocolate, caramel following. Sweet, with a lot of bourbon notes, some coconut and vanilla, caramel. Medium body, low carbonation and a sweet and alcoholic finish.

Very happily pounced upon this beer at the brewery as we were headed north and I had looked forward to visiting this brewery. I like the regular Troeg and this stuff is appreciably better and that is saying a lot. I wound up buying more to take to Maine to share with friends. Good stuff.

Pours dark rust-brown with minimal head or lacing from bottle to glass. Smells of sweet liquor and malt. Taste is sweet, more like rum than bourbon, with malt, hops, abundant vanilla, and some faint raisin, plum or grape at the end. Quite good. Not sure I'd buy it again, but good for a one time $17 a bottle limited edition. Feels a touch boozy but soft and finish doesn't linger and isn't resiny or thick at all.

L: Hazy dark brown with amber edges. A big foamy tan head. Medium-good retention, spots of lacing.

S: Bourbon and rich complex malts. Tons of toasted coconut, vanilla, caramel, rye bread, gingerbread, some date, fig, and raisin. Slight warmth of booze.

T: Toasted coconut, vanilla, and toasted coconut upfront. Some mild bourbon taste. Tons of caramel, brown bread, and toffee. Cherry, date, fig, and raisin notes. Finishes lightly sweet, slightly warm, but cleans away quickly from its lager aspects.

F: Surprisingly light-bodied. Medium-ish, but well-carbonation. Extremely and dangerously easy to drink.

O: A really good bourbon-barrel beer. Super tasty, yet crushable.

750ml acquired in a trade, bottled in Jan 2014, just under two years old.

Pours a ruby red brown with very little carbonation and little haze. Some floaties and slightly thin, probably from age.

Huge nutty aroma up front. Hazelnut, toasted malt, fig/prune/cherry dark fruit notes, vanilla, caramel, and some boozy bourbon undertones.

Less nutty character in flavor. The dark fruit notes that were subtle in aroma take front stage in flavor, followed by sweet vanilla, molasses, subtle oak woodiness, toffee, and some bourbon heat.

Medium-heavy bodied, low carbonation, sweet, fruity, a little too thin.

Overall, this beer has a wonderful aroma and very layered and complex flavor, but I think two years is a bit too long for this one to sit. The body and mouthfeel of this beer drastically changes over time and while the aroma and flavor are still there, this becomes thin and boozy.

My wife says this one smells like a fig newton and I don't disagree. Lots of sweet, dark fruit both on the nose and palate. Also some brighter apple and pomegranate up front and brown sugar and vanilla on the finish. Really well-integrated bourbon flavors, but ultimately a little sweet for my taste (much like the base beer). Still an expert use of the barrel and an interesting improvement on the base beer.
