The Troegenator has awoken! After hibernating for six months in bourbon barrels, we’re excited to report that Bourbon Barrel-Aged Troegenator is ready for release today at 11am. The barrel-aging process has transformed Troegenator into a lush Double Bock with undertones of vanilla, oak, and toasted coconut amid a warm blanket of tangy bourbon notes.

Bottle shared thanks to Maakun. Clear dark caramel pour with a thin tan head. Heavy bourbon smell, with vanilla, chocolate, caramel following. Sweet, with a lot of bourbon notes, some coconut and vanilla, caramel. Medium body, low carbonation and a sweet and alcoholic finish.

750ml acquired in a trade, bottled in Jan 2014, just under two years old.

Pours a ruby red brown with very little carbonation and little haze. Some floaties and slightly thin, probably from age.

Huge nutty aroma up front. Hazelnut, toasted malt, fig/prune/cherry dark fruit notes, vanilla, caramel, and some boozy bourbon undertones.

Less nutty character in flavor. The dark fruit notes that were subtle in aroma take front stage in flavor, followed by sweet vanilla, molasses, subtle oak woodiness, toffee, and some bourbon heat.

Medium-heavy bodied, low carbonation, sweet, fruity, a little too thin.

Overall, this beer has a wonderful aroma and very layered and complex flavor, but I think two years is a bit too long for this one to sit. The body and mouthfeel of this beer drastically changes over time and while the aroma and flavor are still there, this becomes thin and boozy.

Poured from a bottle from the most recent release into a snifter.

A: A super dark translucent amber. Bubbly, but no head at all. Slightly odd.
S: Vanilla and molasses on the nose. Smells great.
T: Some oakiness. Not as sweet as the nose.
F: Slightly bubbly, but drinkable. Chewy.
O: This is pretty nice, but not super flavorful. No hints of booziness though.

A - Just shy of two finger's worth of crisp audibly fizzy medium khaki colored froth that quickly away... There is also no lacing left, just a small splotch in the center of the glass and an uber thin collar... The beer is largely still with a few stray carbonation bubbles and small streaks here and there... The color is a warm medium brown with a faint ruby hue...

S - The bourbon barrel aging notes are at the forefront... Vanilla... Some light caramel notes... Some faint banana notes mixed in as well... The original troeganator goodness is a bit obscured, but it lingers beneath the surface... Quite intoxicating...

T - A slight booze presence to start... Next up is a subtle mix of caramel and vanilla... The lite banana notes detected on the nose are also present on the palate... There is also a strong malt base that lies beneath it all... A slight warmth / burn of the bourbon barrel aging lingers in the back of the throat for a bit...

M - On the lighter side of full bodied... Loaded with prickly carbonation... A bit chewy, a bit syrupy and a bit sticky... Fills the mouth completely...

D - I've got mixed feelings on this creation... On one hand it's a rock solid highly enjoyable bourbon barrel aged beer... On the other hand the greatness that is the tried and true troeganator is a bit missing in action... Perhaps some more time in the cellar will see this one develop a bit more... Still highly enjoyable and recommended...

P- Troegs Brewing Company

A- clear red color with half finger head and no lacing. Looks almost like wine in my snifter glass.

S- vanilla and bourbon dominate. This is gonna be good my friends!

F- the bourbon hits me first followed immediately by some of the oak aged wood. The vanilla rounds it out beautifully. You would think the bourbon would mak eit hard to put down but now, just enough to make it sweet tasting.

M-strong on the booze and you can tell from the first sip. Bourbon coats the mouth and throat and it is very very smooth.

O- OMG one of the top 3 beers from Troegs for me...ranks behind Nugget Nectar and before Perpretual IPA.

Poured from the bottle into a snifter glass at a tasting. Big thanks to K!

Deep chestnut body brown, a bit clear, but with a nice whispy top. Good tan ring with some nice golden yellow hues.

What a fantastic nose on this. Great hazelnut aromas and toast. Creamy vanilla and good controlled warmth and head. Nice amounts of wood and oak, just overall very impressive, with a great nutty angle.

Palate tones things down a bit to bring you back to earth, giving some slightly less impressions. Matching nutty quality with caramel and toffee thick. An interesting palate feel that's lighter and less bold than the nose expects, crisp slightly but still very chewy almost like wheat. Mouthfeel comes interestingly prickly but smooth as well on the finish.

It's overall real impressive, and a neat experiment for a doppel, but it comes out wonderfully.
