Our latest Scratch Beer creation represents our interpretation of a traditional dunkel (German for “dark”) beer. Originally developed in Bavaria, the Dunkel Lager is generally regarded as the world’s oldest true beer style. Keeping our roots in traditional German brewing in mind, but giving a nod to our more exploratory instincts, Scratch #132 is a refreshing, slightly gentler take on the style. The use of Chocolate and Munich malts coupled with noble hops results in a smooth, rich, and complex lager. Scratch #132 combines a slightly dry chocolate note and bready sweetness with the roundness and crisp character of a classic lager, but without the heaviness of other dark beer styles such as porters or stouts. Prost!

I had this on tap at Tröegs, served chilled in a lager glass.
The color is deep amber like maple sap w/ light haze w/ thick beige creamy head. The smell is aromatic with slight toasted malt smell and gentle caramel accent with mild yeast in the nose. The mouthfeel has a malty bready quality with medium high carbonation and dry finish.
The flavor is very good with mild sweetness and toasty malt w/ a slight caramel accent. The yeast adds a mineral quality with light hops in the mix and gently dry nutty finish.
This is another very good lager from Tröegs-fits the style well and is drinkable w/ refreshing feel.

Draft offering at the troegs tasting room. The brew appears a clear amber color. A yellowish tan head sits atop about a finger strong. A spotty webbing of lace sticks to the glass.
The smell includes notes of caramel and toffee malt. Some fruity sweetness mildly floral with hops breaks things up.
The taste is caramel/toffee with a fresh grainy sweetness. A mild hop bitterness and a fruity hop/alcohol aftertaste rounds things out. Pretty typical of the style.
This is a medium bodied brew with a modest amount of carbonation. It is crisp and easy drinking. No thrills, nothing bad about it either. Just a middle of the road offering that you could take it or leave it.
