Brewed by:
Tröegs Brewing Company
Pennsylvania, United States | website

Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.80%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
Scratch #137 represents a further refining of the HopCyclone process. A stainless steel device inside our fermenters creates a swirling vortex during the dry-hop process that maximizes hop aroma while minimizing hop usage. Dry-hopped with 100 pounds of equal parts Cascade, Citra, and Chinook hops, this intense IPA doesn’t pull any punches. Here at Tröegs, we love testing the boundaries of our equipment as well as your taste buds. Scratch #137 will push your palate into humulus lupulus overload!

88 IBU.

12 oz. bottle poured into a Burley Oak snifter (thanks to DrBier, enjoy your OTWOA)

A: A hazy copper-tinged straw body that has a nice pencil-thin head and leaves a nice thin collar.

S: Quite fruity and floral body from some excellent hops.

T: It doesn't live up to the smell but it is just an ok IPA that is just put together decently. This is almost watery. Just tastes like your standard mediocre IPA. I just looked it up to see what was special about this IPA, and I don't really get those 88 IBUs or anything special from that HopCyclone process. Earthy and piney aftertaste.

M: Easy going but it is lacking some body and carbonation. It is quite thin.

O: I find myself wanting their Triple Mango IPA.

Cheers to a co-worker for sharing a bottle with me...

A - An active cascading pour yields a bit more than a fingers worth of crisp light khaki colored froth comprised of lively medium-to-large chunky bubbles... Modest at best retention gives way to a full veil of lacing and a moderate-to-thick collar... The color is a mix of pale straw and light honey... There is a faint haziness that lingers throughout... Fairly still with just a few streaks of briskly paced carbonation seen towards the top of the glass... Not a bad looking brew by any means...

S - The hops are clearly at the forefront... They take on a wide range of characters... There's an attractive muskiness... There are some floral and piney notes... Some light citrus notes linger beneath the surface as well... There is little or no malt base detected, but the hops are never overpowering... Rather pleasant and satisfying...

T - Holy hop hammer... The flavor profile is blistering with hops... Reminds me of when I attempted to taste hops by themselves as part of my home brewing endeavors... The hops are earthy and piney in nature... The flavor profile is all hops... No malt... No balance...

M - Light-to-medium bodied... Starts light and fluffy but quickly turns bitter and slightly puckering... There's a slightly juicy component as well... Hop resins coats the mouth... A little bit of sharp carbonation...

D - A sipper... I like well balance American IPAs with strong malt backbones... This one clearly isn't that... Rather, it is a hop centric one trick poney... The appearance and aroma were very nice, but the palate and the mouthfeel quickly start to detract from the overall package...
