Notes / Commercial Description:
Until the 15th Century, it was common in Germany to use rye malt for brewing beer. However, after a period of poor harvests, it was decided that rye would only be used for baking bread. (Reinheitsgebot, anyone?) Rye beers virtually disappeared for almost five hundred years until finally resurfacing in Bavaria around 1988. Rye is now a commonly used ingredient in modern American craft brewing. The addition of rye imparts a somewhat grainy flavor similar to pumpernickel bread, although the rye presence here is quite subtle given the low percentage of malt used in the mash. The complexity here lies within the hop profile, which runs the gamut of piney and peppery to floral and fruity. The rye adds a slight spicy, dry finish to this otherwise hop-forward ale.

Served on-tap at the brewery.

A - Pours amber orange with a nice one finger tall white head, quickly dissipating down to a light film, leaving sticky webs of lace down the sides of the glass.

S - Smells of spicy rye, doughy pale malt, piney and earthy hops, caramel sweetness and a bit of booze as it warms up. Pretty solid nose, glad the rye doesn't overpower it like others do.

T - Starts off with a quick dose of spicy rye quickly being joined by the caramel and toffee sweetness, bready malt, earthy hops, pine needles and some light booze round things out. Finish is kinda sweet with some mild booze burn, not lingering for very long after the finish.

M - Medium body with moderate carbonation. Sweet, spicy feel from start to finish. Booze is present from the start, only really coming on fully once it warms to room temperature.

O - A decent enough rye IPA. I like how the rye is more of a bit player rather than the main focus. Worth the try if you get the chance.

on tap at the brewery 6/7/14

Pint glass, golden yellow with a decent white head.

Very little on the nose. Was hoping for more, since I like Rye beers.

Faintly peppery taste, very malty, with a light hop bite at the end.

Mouth was around medium

Overall, a little disapointed with this one. As I said, I enjoy rye beers, but this one didn't smack me in the mouth as much as I would have liked. Probably a good try for first time "ryers", and those who don't like being smacked in the face. :)
