Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.50%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
Scratch #139 represents our interpretation of the classic Belgian-style ale – the Saison. This once near-extinct ale was brewed in farmhouses during the winter months, then stored until the summer when it was served to the farmers, or seasonal workers (“saison” is French for “season”). Keeping with a French theme, we use a strain of French Saison yeast to enhance the mouthfeel, which lends a rich, silky texture and dry, champagne-like finish. The result is a mouthwatering, generously carbonated Saison with a tangy citrus character, sweet malt backbone, and contrasting peppery spiciness. À la vôtre!

A - Just shy of a finger's worth of crisp off-white colored head... Limited retention gives way to a lopsided veil of lacing and a modest collar... A few carbonation bubbles can be seen bursting through the surface... The color is a pale honey amber... There is a moderate haziness throughout... There is a slight to modest bit of slightly sluggish carbonation throughout making this one seem surprisingly thick and viscous... Not a bad looking brew by any means though there are some unexpected facets for the style...

S - An intoxicating Belgian nose... Strong Belgian yeast notes... Loads of candied sugar sweetness... A very subtle but enjoyable floral presence... Simple straight forward and very enjoyable...

T - A potent array of varied flavors clash on the palate... The Belgian yeast is at the forefront along with the candied sugars... Some light honey notes... There is a subtle hop presence... Lots of grassy notes on the finish... Lots of complexities that prove challenging... The flavors seem to clash a bit rather than work harmoniously...

M - Medium bodied... Firm... Crisp... Spry carbonation... A bit sticky...

D - An interesting and enjoyable Saison that seems to meander into Belgian Pale Ale and even Tripel territory... Lots of highlights, but there is something slightly off overall... I will have no problem finishing the six pack, but it's not something I would revisit with regularity... I wish Troegs would tackle more Belgian Ales as part of their Scratch series...

Served on-tap at the brewery.

A - Pours murky light amber orange with a nice one finger tall white head, quickly dissipating down to a light film, leaving no lace at all on the glass.

S - Smells of bready wheat, pale malts, mild spice from the French yeast, some honey sweetness and a dash of earthy hops. Solid nose, I prefer them with a bit more funk but it's still pretty nice.

T - Starts off with some of the spiciness followed quickly by the chewy wheat, earthy hop bitterness, lightly toasted pale malts and a bit of drying booze. Finish is a little spicy with some light dryness, not lingering overly long.

M - Medium body with moderate carbonation. Smooth, spicy feel with a bit of dryness thrown in.

O - A decent enough saison. Not really sure why they called this one a Belgian saison when they used the French yeast. Either way I had no trouble finishing my glass and I would definitely get another.
