Style: American Double / Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.80%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
Philly Beer Week is upon us once again, and to commemorate the occasion our brewers have developed a hefty Double IPA as cumbersome as the legendary symbol that embodies the week-long celebration – the Hammer of Glory! Scratch #145 was soaked in some of our favorite American hops before being dry-hopped with two classic citrus-forward varieties (Amarillo and Cascade) to overload the senses with orange and grapefruit. The result is a massive hop bomb teetering on the fringes of 9% ABV that’s sure to provide one with the stamina to wield the coveted Hammer of Glory.

Served on-tap at the brewery.

A - Pours hazy golden amber with a nice one finger tall white head, quickly dissipating down to a light film, leaving small webs of lace down the sides of the glass.

S - Smells of strong citric hops, fresh cut grass, pine, dash of herbs, lots of sugary sweetness and some bready malt backing. A bit underwhelming initially, gets a little better as it warms up.

T - Starts off with the big syrupy sweetness that never really fades away. Hints of citric hops, herbs, grass, pine resin and chewy malt try to balance it out but they don't make a dent. Finish is sweet with a bit of hop bitterness, lingering long after the finish. It tries to be balanced but the sweetness just won't let it get there.

M - Medium body with moderate carbonation. Big, syrupy feel wears on the palate. Booze is pretty well hidden, only really coming forward once it warms to room temperature.

O - I wanted to like this one but I honestly can't. It is just too sweet for my liking, making it hard to finish even a half pint. I would rather have a 144 which is way more balanced and easy drinking.

On-tap 1/31/2016 at Natty Greene’s Tavern in North Attleboro, MA, served in a tulip glass.

A: The beer is a deep golden brown color, with a thin off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thin lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains citrus, caramelized malts and earthy hops.

T: The taste starts out sweet with flavors of caramel and citrus. Then an earthy hops bitterness comes in but it’s a bit subdued. The malt character is hearty and brings a good balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and a little smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, good kick, good representation of style, this is a solid 2IPA to drink for a while.

Beer was poured into a snifter at the Union Brewhouse in Weymouth.

Appearance: A one finger head was poured that reduced to a thin layer. It is a hazy pale orange with good clarity and vision of bubbles coming up through the glass. Nice lacing down the glass as the beer was drank.

Smell: Floral, pungent, grassy, tropical, citrus, lemon, pine, caramel, bready, and a little booze.

Taste: Awesome hop flavor with balanced malt background, mild bitterness, and a little booze in the rear.

Mouthfeel: Smooth, thirst quenching, a little booze, medium carbonation, mild tingly bitterness, and medium to full bodied.

Overall: Love the scratch series beers these guys are doing. Especially this one. Very popular beer tonight at the bar. Happy to have gotten a taste. Hope it lasts to have a second.

Clear dark gold/light amber color. Decent head that leaves blotchy spots for lace.

This smells of pine resin and grated grapefruit peel. Touch of alcohol.

Starts with a surprisingly strong pale malt taste. This actually lasts through the aftertaste. Well balanced, especially for a DIPA. Very smooth mouthfeel with a bit of alcohol warmth. The hop component is straight bitterness but in a muted way. Superior.
