Notes: Brimming with optimism, Jovial reveals its enduring charm and infinite merriment with each passing sip. This enticing Belgian-style Dubbel ale features hints of raisin, fig, date and prune. As the flavor develops, traces of toffee, chocolate, and subtle spices emerge.

Quick Review: This really lacks the flavor and body of a belgian dubbel. The body ends up being very thin even as it warms up, and while some of the dubbel flavors are present, they are muted and show up briefly. A decent example of the style, but not worth getting again.

Tröegs Brewing Company "Tröegs Jovial"
375 ml brown glass bottle, corked & caged, apparently without freshness dating
$3.99 @ Roger Wilco, Pennsauken, NJ

Look: A careful pour leaving the sedimented less behind offers a slightly hazy deep chestnut brown colored body beneath a short head of creamy khaki colored foam. The head retention is very goody and the lacing leaves walls of solid foam around the glass.

Smell: Mild aroma of light chocolate, golden to medium dark caramel, and raisins.

Taste: As the aroma suggests with the addition of some light phenolic spiciness from the yeast. A moderate bitterness balances it and it finishes dry despite its maltiness.

Feel: Medium bodied with a dextrinous edge. Moderate, fine-bubbled, natural carbonation due to bottle conditioning.

Overall: Very much a classic style Belgian dubbed that's very well brewed, balanced, and rounded. If this came from Belgium it would probably be rated higher.

L: Hazy, dark amber with a thin foamy beige head. Dies down somewhat after a minutes, but plentiful lacing is left behind.

S: Lots of maraschino cherry, fresh and dried plum; pumpernickel bread, clove, and faint banana.

T: Lots of dark bread, like pumpernickel bread; compliment by sweet cherry, plum, and raisin notes. Finishes lightly dry with clove, and slight banana. Tastes like banana bread.

F: Medium-bodied. Well-carbonated.

O: A very solid American Belgian style dubbel. Not as spicy or dry as some, but I don't mind that. Troegs seems to do a good job at making classic European styles. I definitely enjoyed this.

Poured into a chalice: color is amber, a little dense, head poured thick at least 2 inches at first pour, then slowly dissipated, keeping at least 1 inch through the tasting.

Smell is very good, its not as deep in its belgian yeast off flavors, but the malt profile is wonderful: light toast, bread, toffee, then some fig, raisin, and fruitiness - very enticing.

Taste is slightly less in depth than the aroma leads you to believe, the flavor drys out and balances what the smell would lead you to believe would be a sweeter flavor: malt is bready, light toast and toffee, less fruit than aroma, just light fig.

Mouthfeel is very good, nice lighter sweetness balanced by the drying fermentation.

Overall, a very good, cleaner dubbel, seems to be in between a bier de garde and dubbel, but a great aroma seems to create a great balance between styles.

Bottle at the brewery. Pours clear amber brown with a small half finger tall white head, quickly dissipating down to a light film, leaving minimal lacing on the sides of the glass.

Smells of raisins, figs, prunes and other dark fruits as well as dark candied fruit, toffee, caramel and mildly toasted malt. Taste is mainly dark fruits up front being backed by the sweetness and finally some chewy malt. Smooth, sweet feel with a touch of booze after each sip.

Overall I had my doubts about this one but it turned out pretty well. It has all of the desired flavors and it remains quite drinkable. Worth a shot if you are into the style.

This ale doesn't remind me much of a Belgian. It smells and tastes more like a Porter. I get very little of the fruit on the nose mentioned by other reviewers. It looks fine, sports a big head for a short period of time.

Maybe I am disappointed because the bottle came with a cork instead of a cap. The cork kind of promised something special and unusual. Jovial is neither.

Is it bad? No. It's pleasant enough to drink. There are no off-flavors. It's just kind of meh. I've had much better from Troegs.

Pours out a cloudy ruddy brown with a nice thick cap of light tan head. The head has nice retention and clings to the side of the glass as it settles. The aroma is mild but still manages to provide some spice, some yeast, and some sweetness. The taste is a bit astringent at first and while it backs off as it warms, it never really went away. The body has a bit of a carbonation tingle and a nice feel to it, not to thick but not watery, either.

12.7oz corked & caged bottle "FRESHEST BY 9/20/16" printed in black above label. Poured into a chalice at fridge temp 7% ABV 13 IBU. The beer pours barely hazy in a dark amber/ light brown color with light brown head. The head recedes to a pencil thin ring and a small island of tiny bubbles. No lacing. The aroma is minimal with hints of brown sugar, chocolate and yeasty spice. The taste is slightly oxidized burnt sugar caramel with some faint Belgian spice and mild bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium to thin bodied, adequately carbonated and mostly dry in the finish. Overall, good. I can usually sense when a beer would match it's rating fresh, but I'm not convinced here. You'll need a flashlight to read the date, but I'd give it another go if fresh.
