Notes / Commercial Description:
Some beers just belong in barrels, and Flying Mouflan – a resiny, chocolatey giant of a barleywine ale – is one of them. We pour every drop we brew into bourbon barrels, taming the sharpness of the hops and uncovering layers of salted caramel, pecan pie and rum raisin.

This is just an average barleywine. Hard to believe that Troegs is charging so much for this as it doesn't taste much different than regular mouflan. Troegs has gone downhill over the last few years.

Pours a deep caramel, thin whispy lace, mild carbonation. Aroma is not good on this one - there are some wimpy notes of cheap bourbon, driftwood moss, sweet malt that clashes with the earthier aromas, viney hops. The result reminds me of an antibiotic I used to take as a kid but can’t remember the name of. Very disappointing.

The taste is a little better but still a misfire. Whatever barrels they used imparted a ton of wood flavor - if I had looked down & saw wood chips actually floating in the beer I wouldn’t have been surprised. The bourbon is low shelf, fusel and raw tasting. There are some hops too which add some musty cardboard flavors towards the back palate, along with some german malt that never comes to life. Finishes dry. I love base Flying Mouflan, and was a huge fan of the regular oak-aged version, so I was shocked how badly the bourbon version misses the mark. Troegs is consistently solid so maybe this was just a bad batch but it was a huge letdown in my opinion.

375ml corked and caged bottle into a matching mouflan cervoise. The brew appears a hazy mahogany with ruby clarity and orange around the edges when held to the light. 2+ fingers of yellowish khaki head appear when poured aggressively down the center of the glass (as directed by the label instructions.) The cap fades and holds around the perimeter.

The nose is quite sweet smelling coming across like raison, caramel, vanilla and toasted coconut. Some earthen woody element blends to some tangy alcohol addition. Tangy in a whiskey sense, not bacterial or distracting in anyway...in fact its quite complimentary. The nose on this is perhaps the best attribute, it carries everything I enjoy about mouflan and includes a perfect barrel presence as well.

The taste has a bit of sweetness reminiscent of caramel and raison with a strong indication of cocoa, oak and tangy whiskey. A hint of vanilla and toasted coconut in the aftertaste and slight tannic dryness mingles with the warming alcohol. The typical bitter hop inclusion of fresh mouflan is almost completely faded other than an herbal flavor some sips and in it's place is a fantastic vintage mouflan with great focus on malt and barrel flavoring.

This is medium bodied and modestly carbonated. A great mix of aged mouflan with enjoyable barrel nuance. The alcohol is really well masked in this, in fact its hard to believe its +4% more alcohol than normal mouflan. Troegs knows they did great with this one and they priced it accordingly. If it was cheaper id buy a case but at $50 a 4-pack...yikes. You owe it to yourself to try at least one of these before its gone.

After the fact thoughts and consideration. The label states this is bottle conditioned but there was no sediment in the bottle and it was quite carbonated despite having a bottle date of 3 days ago stamped on the neck. I dont understand how thats possible?

Thanks to lurpy1 for schlepping this bottle back from his much beloved job out east for the guy who got him hooked into all this madness. 375ML corked & caged, all to myself.

And corked is right. I can’t move the bloody thing with my Superman hands, & a utensil designed for the job snaps it in half. Out comes the corkscrew, which finally ends the blitzkrieg. I laugh at the “highly carbonated” description on the label, because there isn’t even a stage whisper when the cork tree finally releases its grip on the glass, & there’s barely any bubbles atop the dark, reddy liquid. The nose is bourbon-soaked Werther’s Original, with a bit of vanilla. Not very much of any of it, though.

Flying Mouflan – Barrel Aged is one of those beers where I’d prefer to head back to base camp. The brewer must have left a significant amount of bourbon in the old barrel, because there’s at least a couple teaspoons in my beer. Caramel fishtails in behind, towing vanilla, light bitterness from the hops, figgy, touch of smoke, big bellow of sweet cane sugar that takes over the finish. Nice & thick, like a girl holding a “don’t like this, don’t look” sign in the middle of a median somewhere. For a near-beer, this is killa drinkable.

Troegs has taken a world-class beer, tossed it into barrels, & summoned a beer that’s about three notches down the Thurstone scale from the original. Still a very good beer, but gimme shelter in the low-flying, non-barrel, straight-up Mouflan any day.

Bottle from Joe. Poured on 3/20/15 into my a Rapp tulip. Pours I dark brown and viscous with a small khaki head, creamy, that dissipates somewhat quickly. Huge aroma of vanilla, brown sugar, molasses, more brown sugar, bourbon, oak, marshmallow. Flavor follows with an incredibly smooth vanilla brown sugar, marshmallow, super mellow bourbon, oak, some molasses. Finishes with more explosions of vanilla left on the palate. Big and viscous, medium to medium low carbonation, just the perfect mouthfeel. Honestly one of the best, best, best Barleywines I have beer had. I am impressed.

This stuff is amazing! I bought a 4-pack on release day thinking I'd try 1 and age/trade the rest but I'm down to my last bottle. It's so damn good!!!
