Style: Hefeweizen

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 4.80%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
The dream begins with open top fermentation. At high krausen a foamy, rocky yeast head crests the sides of the fermenter releasing notes of black pepper and spicy clove. Unfiltered and cloudy with yeast, it's slightly tart & downright refreshing.

Pours a pale gold, with a think white head that quickly settles to a think cap across the beer. Beautiful lacing is seen, and the small head quickly reforms with slight agitation. Loads of carbonation can be seen bubbling up rapidly through the brew, making it appear quite lively.

The nose is startlingly complex, with notes of citrus, a grassy scent, deep earth, and even a medicinal scent all vying for top billing in the event. These notes all shift, rise and fall, leaving you content just to sniff the beer periodically. Like the visual, the scent really stimulates your senses, which is somewhat contrary to the brews name. The flavors are somewhat of a let down for me, with a dank, super earthy note overtaking the entire brew. You get a faint hint of the other flavors right at the end, before, inexplicably, the flavors are cut short and you are left with a light flavor reminiscent of the medicinal quality I perceived in the nose. A real let down compared to the rest of the beer. This beer is neither bitter nor sweet, it just is, which does stand out amongst the other beers I've had the pleasure of having, so there is that.

The mouth feel is incredibly light, almost like mildly carbonated water. Along with one of the most dry finishes I've ever had in a beer, this one goes down easily. If only the flavors where there to make you really want to keep drinking. This brew is not offensive, but it's also no inspiring at all. Like it's bitterness vs sweetness, this beer just simply is, and in a world of great beer easily attainable, I'll be passing on this one.

Poured with yeast roused from a bottle into a weizen glass.

Overall: A fine hefeweizen with all the characteristics you'd expect.

Look: golden and cloudy with a one-finger head and fair amount of lacing.
Smell: characteristic ripe banana, clove, and tart funk.
Taste: somewhat tart and phenolic, some banana and spice wafts up, and a hint of bubblegum upon swallowing.
Feel: bites the tongue, fairly light and smooth.

Straw yellow, but the cloudiness is nice. Smells and tastes too heavily of banana and clove. The grain and any hopping are barely noticeable. Good full body, smooth on the tongue.

What jumps out at me with this beer is the spicy notes that I don't typically associate with a wheat beer. It's very pleasant and very refreshing to come across something like this, and aside from that little bit of spice, you're still looking at a solid wheat beer. Very good.

Nice bouquet of pepper and yeast, and clove. Cloudy, unfiltered...aftertaste of rubber or burnt plastic. A pretty good beer, not one to write home about though.
