Dang it! I see that the approved pic is of a CAN & yet, here I am, reviewing it from a bottle! The CANQuest (tm) needs to get this back on track. Plans are being made to score some CANs, but I'm not waiting to drink this one just for the CANportunity to CANduct a side-by-side/back-to-back.

From the bottle: "Ale brewed with Mango"; "Each spring, hop growers dust off their pruning shears and trim the first shoots, bolstering the bines for a rich growing season. First Cut – a mouthful of silky Simcoe and a touch of mango – is a nod to this ritual, without which the world would be a less hoppy place."

I want to be hoppy! To achieve this, I began with a Pop! of the cap, followed by a gentle pour into the awaiting glass. My hoppiness increased following the in-glass swirl which produced a finger of dense, foamy, rocky, tawny head with great retention, leaving behind nice lacing in its wake. Color was solid-Amber (SRM = > , < 9) with NE-quality clarity. Nose had the earthiness of wet hops, accompanied by a light cattiness (hello, Simcoe the Kitty) and the unmistakable fruitiness of mango. My hoppiness makes me want to do the Mango Wango Tango! Mouthfeel was medium. The taste was more in line with what I want from an AIPA - less sweet fruitiness & more bite! Here, the catty bitterness was rounded, but not ruined, by the fruitiness. It is one thing to take the edge off, it is another to sand it smooth & I am having a tough time reconciling these new fruity AIPAs. Leave it to Troegs to be the ones to get it right. Simcoe was having at me with her teeth & claws while Mango wrestled her away & my tongue was loving the catfight. This beer was striking a nice balance and the earthiness only enhanced the exbeerience, giving it a breadiness. This makes me want to bake a loaf of fruit bread with mango & papaya. Finish was dry, but on the cutting edge of semi-dry with just enough fruitiness to give me pause.

I gotta score me some CANs!

Mission acCANplished! I have a CAN, courtesy of the FGBS, today is T, 13 March 2018 & so without further ado, a CANQuest (tm) review!

From the CAN: ""Ale brewed with Mango"; "Handcrafted by the Tröegs Bros."; "IBU[:] 45/Color: Hazy Orange/Hop Cycle: Spring/Hops[:] Comet, Simcoe"; "Each spring, hop growers dust off their pruning shears and trim the first shoots, bolstering the bines for a rich growing season. First Cut – a mouthful of silky Simcoe and a touch of mango – is a nod to this ritual, without which the world would be a less hoppy place."

I Crack!ed open the vent and CANmenced a slow, gentle Glug because I wondered about their use of the word "Hazy". I believe that I CAN usually CANduct a Glug that will result in good, if not great, clarity. Sure enough, color was Amber to Deep Amber/Light Copper (SRM = > 9, < 13) with NE-quality clarity. An in-glass swirl raised just under two fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, tawny head with very good retention that left behind nice lacing in its wake. Nose smelled great, to this self-described, self-avowed hophead! Very much of mango, but Simcoe, the playful, mischievous kitty was hiding in there too. For those unfamiliar, Simcoe has a particular, peculiar cattiness. Mouthfeel was medium. The taste was only lightly bitter, very fruity with a slight earthy cattiness. Mmm. This is the sort of thing that a) makes me very happy & b) I could fill a cooler with. Finish was semi-dry, bordering on dry. I CAN't wait for next year's batch!

Pours a very attractive orange amber with a 2 finger sticky white head that leaves plenty of patches of thin lace.

Smell is mango, apricot, honey, tangerine, and grapefruit rind.

Taste follows nicely mango, honey, apricot, tangerine, a hint of caramel, and very balanced grapefruit.

Mouthfeel is medium, plenty of life, not dry at all, and drinks very easy.

Overall I really enjoyed this one @jzeilinger. I would love to crush cans of this around the pool, on the course, or on a boat on a hot day.

Freshest by 5/25/17. 12oz bottle poured into a tulip. Pours a hazy burnt golden; big fluffy off-white head that fades leaving nice retention and sticky lacing. The aromas start off strong, but quickly fall off. Hints of mango and tropical fruit. Lots of fresh bread, biscuits and crackers. Malts are there. The flavors are clean, but sweet. The mango addition gives this one a sweetness to it, but it's nothing cloying or over the top. Lots of fresh grass with some hints of pine. Solid malt backbone. It's not too bitter at all. Alcohol goes unnoticed. Mouthfeel is nice. It's light with moderate carbonation. It's very fluffy and slightly creamy. It's smooth and easy to drink.

This is an okay IPA. There's nothing wrong with it, but it's nothing too crazy. The mango is subtle and present without dominating, which is cool. There's nothing artificial going on. It's very refreshing and would hit the spot when the weather warms.

Pulled from a cask into a goblet.

I'm not a hoppy IPA guy though I really appreciate when they're balanced. This definitely fits the later bill. The head was wonderful foamy, as a good cask will provide. I can't really comment on the lacing as I was sipping it to slowly to tell. The nose has a great blend of slight hoppy aroma mixed with the fruit. The flavor also balanced those two perfectly. The flavor is mango forward, not in an overwhelming fashion. It's simply a very good ale with some mango sweetness. The hops come up in the finish but still are blended well with the mango. Highly recommended!

Very dull in flavor profile for whatever, or any, hops were added.

12 oz pour on tap into a nonic pint

A: body is a rich amber orange color with great clarity

S: lots of caramel malts with nice heavy sweet mango light grass and some herbal notes

M: medium bodied lighter good cling nice carbonation

O: I am not a fan of fruit added IPAs but this one doesn't have a sickly sweet artificial juice taste. Nice balance and good malt presence all around a pretty solid beer

Tröegs Brewing Co. "First Cut IPA"
12 fl. oz. brown glass bottle, "FRESHEST BY 061317" and sampled on 032717
$2.49 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ

Notes via stream of consciousness: "Ale brewed with mango". OK. Hops listed are Comet and Simcoe - I'm not familiar with Comet. So, nice appearance. Full head of off-white over a hazy deep amber body. Aroma? The mango comes through with some other fruitiness (passionfruit, apricot), some pungency, pine, a bit of onion, and grassiness. At first whiff it's a little odd, combining the clear fruitiness of the mango with more piney, earthy, and vegetal notes, but it comes together as it warms a bit. The flavor follows with some fruit upfront, and then more pine, earth, and grass in the finish - all of this over and mixed with a gently caramelish and subtly toasty malt base. It's surprisingly smooth in that way, and the listed 45 IBUs certainly helps - it's just a little lower than it might otherwise be, but of course for a beer with a fruit side you want that. The alcohol never shows, but at just 6.2% ABV you wouldn't expect that either. Medium body, gently crisp and then smooth with a moderate carbonation level.

I luv maybe an hour from the brewery and spend most of my waking hours closer. I also like mango-flavored things. However, this was a letdown. A touch dry, not much discernible fruit, pours orange with minimal head and minima lacing. Not bad, but I’d really love to see a near-hometown brewery do better.
