Tröegs Brewing Co. "First Cut IPA"
12 fl. oz. brown glass bottle, "FRESHEST BY 061317" and sampled on 032717
$2.49 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ

Notes via stream of consciousness: "Ale brewed with mango". OK. Hops listed are Comet and Simcoe - I'm not familiar with Comet. So, nice appearance. Full head of off-white over a hazy deep amber body. Aroma? The mango comes through with some other fruitiness (passionfruit, apricot), some pungency, pine, a bit of onion, and grassiness. At first whiff it's a little odd, combining the clear fruitiness of the mango with more piney, earthy, and vegetal notes, but it comes together as it warms a bit. The flavor follows with some fruit upfront, and then more pine, earth, and grass in the finish - all of this over and mixed with a gently caramelish and subtly toasty malt base. It's surprisingly smooth in that way, and the listed 45 IBUs certainly helps - it's just a little lower than it might otherwise be, but of course for a beer with a fruit side you want that. The alcohol never shows, but at just 6.2% ABV you wouldn't expect that either. Medium body, gently crisp and then smooth with a moderate carbonation level.

On-tap 5/3/2017 at Pour Farm Tavern in New Bedford, MA, served in a tulip glass.

A: The beer is a dark cloudy amber color, with a thin white head that fades quickly and leaves a thin lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains mango and other citrus fruits, floral hops and caramelized malts.

T: The taste starts out sweet with flavors of mango, other citrus fruits and caramel. Then a strong floral hops bitterness comes in. The malt character is hearty but not too heavy brings a very good balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet and slightly hoppy.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: Very tasty, goes down quite easily, not too filling, good kick, good representation of style, this is a solid IPA to drink for a long time.

Dang it! I see that the approved pic is of a CAN & yet, here I am, reviewing it from a bottle! The CANQuest (tm) needs to get this back on track. Plans are being made to score some CANs, but I'm not waiting to drink this one just for the CANportunity to CANduct a side-by-side/back-to-back.

From the bottle: "Ale brewed with Mango"; "Each spring, hop growers dust off their pruning shears and trim the first shoots, bolstering the bines for a rich growing season. First Cut – a mouthful of silky Simcoe and a touch of mango – is a nod to this ritual, without which the world would be a less hoppy place."

I want to be hoppy! To achieve this, I began with a Pop! of the cap, followed by a gentle pour into the awaiting glass. My hoppiness increased following the in-glass swirl which produced a finger of dense, foamy, rocky, tawny head with great retention, leaving behind nice lacing in its wake. Color was solid-Amber (SRM = > , < 9) with NE-quality clarity. Nose had the earthiness of wet hops, accompanied by a light cattiness (hello, Simcoe the Kitty) and the unmistakable fruitiness of mango. My hoppiness makes me want to do the Mango Wango Tango! Mouthfeel was medium. The taste was more in line with what I want from an AIPA - less sweet fruitiness & more bite! Here, the catty bitterness was rounded, but not ruined, by the fruitiness. It is one thing to take the edge off, it is another to sand it smooth & I am having a tough time reconciling these new fruity AIPAs. Leave it to Troegs to be the ones to get it right. Simcoe was having at me with her teeth & claws while Mango wrestled her away & my tongue was loving the catfight. This beer was striking a nice balance and the earthiness only enhanced the exbeerience, giving it a breadiness. This makes me want to bake a loaf of fruit bread with mango & papaya. Finish was dry, but on the cutting edge of semi-dry with just enough fruitiness to give me pause.

I gotta score me some CANs!

Mission acCANplished! I have a CAN, courtesy of the FGBS, today is T, 13 March 2018 & so without further ado, a CANQuest (tm) review!

From the CAN: ""Ale brewed with Mango"; "Handcrafted by the Tröegs Bros."; "IBU[:] 45/Color: Hazy Orange/Hop Cycle: Spring/Hops[:] Comet, Simcoe"; "Each spring, hop growers dust off their pruning shears and trim the first shoots, bolstering the bines for a rich growing season. First Cut – a mouthful of silky Simcoe and a touch of mango – is a nod to this ritual, without which the world would be a less hoppy place."

I Crack!ed open the vent and CANmenced a slow, gentle Glug because I wondered about their use of the word "Hazy". I believe that I CAN usually CANduct a Glug that will result in good, if not great, clarity. Sure enough, color was Amber to Deep Amber/Light Copper (SRM = > 9, < 13) with NE-quality clarity. An in-glass swirl raised just under two fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, tawny head with very good retention that left behind nice lacing in its wake. Nose smelled great, to this self-described, self-avowed hophead! Very much of mango, but Simcoe, the playful, mischievous kitty was hiding in there too. For those unfamiliar, Simcoe has a particular, peculiar cattiness. Mouthfeel was medium. The taste was only lightly bitter, very fruity with a slight earthy cattiness. Mmm. This is the sort of thing that a) makes me very happy & b) I could fill a cooler with. Finish was semi-dry, bordering on dry. I CAN't wait for next year's batch!

12oz bottle poured into a tulip appears a slightly hazy copper color with off-white cap a finger tall that fades leaving stringy lace.

Juicy fruited/hoppy aroma slightly catty and dank towards the back. The wonderful initial aspects of this seemingly breathe away to nothing quite quickly leaving toasty malt, butter and minerals remaining in the glass.

The taste is sadly nothing like the aroma indicates. Its vegetal, mineral laden and has a buttery diacetyl aftertaste. It has some hints of pleasant fruity hops but the bad greatly outweigh the good leaving a lingering aftertaste akin to chlorine.

Medium in body with modest carbonation. This started off like it was going to be amazing but half way through my glass it becomes a vegetal chlorinated mess that I dont want to have anything to do with. How can something smell so promising out the gate and turn this bad? I ended up pouring this down the drain.

Poured from the can into a Spiegelau IPA glass. Freshest by June 9th 2017.

A nice beaming and clear body color, one that is quite bright but also very dark, flirting with a red amber and orange light tangerine in the middle. Head is a good solid three fingers, quite a bit soapy though in retention with pill like lacing and bowing out at just under a finger. Soapy collar and a quick settle with some fast rising fine carbonation.

Good clean hop aroma on the nose. Does have a grassy to herbal/pine kick but with a bit of a juiced body. Not much sensing tropical notes here or hinting of added fruit surprisingly. Solid hop body and pleasant.

Palate takes a simpler if weaker turn. Light watery body almost flirting with a session IPA quality. A much fruitier than expected palate on first sip. A candy like sense of fruited tropics, and a sharp hop herb permeate quite a bit. A bit of a papery mouthfeel, and wet finish on the swallow though. Slight caramel hints also make for a little bit more interest, and there's a good herbal to mint and spicy quality on the finish as well.

A pretty decent IPA but is taken a bit down by a weakened mouthfeel it seems.

A thanks to the founding father of the canquest, woodychandler, for this beer. Poured from a 12 oz. can. Has an orange/golden color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of oranges, mango. Taste is oranges, malts, light mango, mild bitterness. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a pretty good beer, but I expect more from this brewer.
