Nebulous starts with our triple golden ale LaGrave. Some goes into wine barrels, some goes into virgin oak, and some goes into foeders teeming with Brettanomyces. The barrels ferment for months, sometimes years. As long as it takes. The wild yeast gives life to notes of honeysuckle, pear and white peach, while the oak layers in a tinge of vanilla. Bottle-conditioning puts a thousand fine points on it.

2017 vintage. Poured from a cork'n'cage 12.7 oz bottle into a Dogfish head tulip

L: Slightly cloudy dark golden amber pour. Big fluffy white head. Falls fast... nice ring of lacing. A bit of sediment at the finish.

S: Sweet/tart and acidic. Green fruit, barrel, and funk.

T.F: Follows the nose. A bit more sweetness up front than expected. Tart... modest acidity. Honey, berry, pear, and lemon. Oak and funk... some white wine character and green fruit. Apple skins and vinegar. Complex... medium bodied with prickly carbonation. More fruit and funk to finish.

O: A solid barrel-aged wild ale. Super approachable... good flavor and complexity.

Nebulous from Troegs. Purchased 0n 4/1/21 for $ 11.00 (Including tax) for 12.7 oz bottle ($ 0.866/oz) from Franklin Beer, Franklin, PA. On room temperature shelf at store and stored at home at 42 degrees. Reviewed 30/1/21.
Cork and cage bottle marked “Bottled 2017” on the label. Above the label in partially missing black ink is “(Something illegible) 12/19/17”. Bottle opens with a muted “pop”. Served at 46.2 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. Final temperature 55.9 degrees.
Appearance – 4.25.
First pour – Pale Straw (SRM 2), clear.
Body – Pale Gold (SRM 4), hazy. When rear-lite, same.
Head – Average (Maximum 1.5 cm, aggressive center pour), white, high density and initially fizzy, short retention, leaving a 0.7 cm crown fed by massive effervescence, and a thick complete cap.
Lacing – Good. Medium band of near-microscopic bubbles with a few tiny stalactites.
Aroma – 3 – Weak and slightly fruity, no hops, no malt, no yeast.
Flavor – 4 – Initially, not much flavor at all, other than a slightly sweet overtone of tannic acid from the oak barrels. I might be tasting some pear as well. No alcohol (8 % ABV, as marked on container) taste or aroma. Slight gastric warming eventually begins. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl.
Palate – 3 – Medium, slightly syrupy, soft but invigorating carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 3.5 At three years in the bottle, a very mild and soft example of the style, more of a showcase for the oak barrel tannins rather than vanillin. At half the price I’d buy all I could find. At full price, one and done.

Sampling a cellar temp 12.7 oz corked and caged bottle poured into a snifter. The beer was bottled in 2017.
the beer pours a bronze color with a dense creamy eggshell white head of 1.5 cm foaming up and settling to a very sturdy and lingering surface layer. Several very fine streams of carbonation rise to the surface of my glass.
Aroma is some light biscuity and bready malts with hints of green apple, some white wine and musty straw and blanket notes. Pretty complex nose and no real hop character.
First sip reveals an incredibly soft and smooth textured body, almost creamy mouthfeel. Light overall physical character. The carbonation is also very soft and tiny bubbles, almost like a cask pour. Physically I love this beer, it caught me off guard by just how smooth it is in my glass.
After each sip I have dense creamy lattice on my glass. This is a nice looking beer!
Flavor is what I anticipate after the nose advertises to me. I get some biscuit malt and then tart white wine notes, followed by a bit of straw and funkiness, and then some more acidity and tartness on the finish.
I never detect any alcohol heat and hop character is either faded and absent or buried by funk. Either way Im not tasting much in the way of hop profile.
this beer is interesting and funky and I love the way it feels on my palate. Glad to have chosen this beer tonight.

bottle to snifter; troegs cork/cage sampling with Jovial, LaGrave and Nebulous.

LOOK: cloudy dark yellow, small white head, ok retention.
AROMA: oak, blueberry, white wine, mold, hay, barnyard.
TASTE: blueberry, raspberry, pear, peach, wood, baking soda, woody and sweet upfront but with a sour finish.
FEEL: medium body, lacks carbonation that LaGrave has. tingly, but not bubbly.

Interesting for sure, especially after just tasting the base beer LaGrave.

Picked this up at the brewery a few months back. Bottled in 2017
Pours a large fizzy white head that fades fairly quickly at first, then slows to a medium retention, light lacing, crystal clear medium golden pilsner color

Nose lots of souring bacteria and funk, big vinous funk, little farmhouse, with some acidity, then tons of buttery oak, white wine vinous bright stone fruits

Taste brings big funky souring bacteria again, bright acidity and tartness, a little lemony with more stone fruit, a little peach and apricot, sweet apricot jam, little farmhouse funk balanced with big sweet candy malt and fruit, some citrus as well, plenty of buttery and vanilla oak as well, smooth acidity and funk, little bready doughy malt and bacteria funk lingering

Mouth is med bod, smooth acidity, high fizzy carb

Overall pretty nice, lots of great oak, nice fruits, good souring bacteria and funk, without bring over the top acidity as it's fairly smooth, enjoyable

Light taste. Mild for a beer. Tastes of vanilla. Very mild for a beer of this ABV. Pours dark straw colors. Light head - drinks easy. Solid brew with lots of carbonation. Honey and vanilla aftertaste.

One of the best wild ales I have had. The flavors are very subtle and nicely blended. Bought a bottle during a recent trip to Pennsylvania and will look for again when I visit again.

Poured into a tulip glass. Beautiful creamy white head and great lacing atop a slightly cloudy yellow body. Smell of green apples and white wine. Flavors include these along with pear and peach. Nice wordiness to the earthy flavors. Smooth feel. Very enjoyable beer!

Tröegs Brewing Company "Nebulous"
12.7 fl. oz. brown glass bottle, corked & caged, "BOTTLED ON 12/19/17" and sampled on 06/16/18
$13.99 @ Wegmans, Collegeville, PA

Notes via stream of consciousness: This must be filtered because there's no sediment in the bottom of the bottle. Or is there? Yes, there is indeed, a small amount. I was wrong. I thought it initially looked clear but there is some sediment to it. It's amber in color beneath a full head of creamy white. Great appearance. I can see hundreds of very tiny bubbles rising alongside the glass adding to the head. In the nose it's oaky and fruity. There's just a little bit of funk to it, a touch of mustiness. The fruits are hard to make out but I'm clearly getting some sweet apple and peach. I'd say it's got a mild floral note to it as well. Interesting, and enticing. On to the flavor... it's surprising because I thought it would be sour but this is just mildly tart. There's just enough to balance the malty sweetness. It's floral and fruity and honeyish, and moderately bitter. The chalky yeastiness comes through clearly, and there's just a hint of Belgian-yeast phenols as well (clove, spiciness, black pepper). It's surprisingly complex as it doesn't really reveal that upon the first sip. I'm getting some white grape, and earthiness, some straw, and a hint of vanilla and dry oak at the swallow and into the finish. There's also a suggestion, just a drip, of sour cherry in there somewhere. In the mouth it's medium-light in body and softly effervescent, much softer and smoother than I thought it would be given all of the bubbles rising at the outset. Looking back, the head has dropped but there are "mountains" of lace rising up around it, so very good lacing at least, and I thought the head retention was quite good as well. Overall it's pretty impressive. It could certainly have been more aggressive but I can't fault it for that, it's really quite refined which is much harder to do. It's so refined and smooth and balanced in fact that I find it hard to believe (well not really) that it's the La Grave underneath. Very nicely done, and certainly worth trying.

12.7oz corked & caged bottle picked up at the brewery last Friday. freshness dating is smudged, but appears to have been bottled 12/19/17, so 4 months old. not sure this should be in the retired section already.

medium golden yellow body with big foamy white head which shrinks to a heavy ring and covering. decent lacing initially. medium amount of carbonation.

smells slightly tart and wine-like.

interesting taste. some mild funkiness. dry, somewhat sour. some apple and vanilla notes. feels more than the 8abv listed. nice sipper of a beer.

mouth about medium, finish bittersweet and dry.

overall, Troegs took their LaGrave, barrel-aged and fermented it, and this is the result. And it works. nice brew.

Light, hay tinged gold, moderate foamy cap that settles into a thin whisp. Nose has lots of vanilla creme, some Brett yeast but not much “funk”, a little honey. The base beer elements (Troegs tripel, LaGrave) are still very present - fruity phenol, Belgian yeast, etc. The aging adds some tartness & the accompanying Brett flavors but the base beer is pretty husky & the two don’t marry phenomenally. No wine notes discernible, definitely some oak tannin, vanilla, some peach & stone fruit floating out there. Solid but not quite a home run. Troegs sour program is still pretty new some it will be interesting to see how it progresses.
