Rugged Trail Nut Brown Ale is back on tap in our Tasting Room for a limited time. Originally released as “Nut Brown Ale,” Rugged Trail was eventually given a makeover and became one of our first year-round beers. Rugged Trail boasts a deep bronze hue, rocky head, and subtle hop aroma. Toasted Amber and Chocolate malts impart a rich nutty character and creamy texture, making Rugged Trail an obvious quaffing delight! 5.0% ABV and 33 IBU. 2014 Availability: draft and growler fills only.

T - roasty/smoky mix. Really nice.
F - near medium mouthfeel. Fairly smooth.
O - a really good beer. Can’t wait to have this by the fire pit.

(12 oz can, freshest by 12/27/2022; purchased a cold single at the brewery last night... poured into a 14 oz mug)
L: crystal-clear, chestnut brown liquid; tall stand of open-build tan foam, collapsing all chunky... barely a collar by the end, little lace
S: nutty chocolate with some roasted barley accenting... leafy, piney hop overtones... nice expressiveness overall, potency moderate
T: relatively earthy hop-forward, dry biscuity malt foundation... hop static and toasty grain flavors humming in the aftertaste... is that a mild phenolic (band aid) note building over time? - this in addition to the increasing intensity of thoroughly-roasted graininess
F: rich, near medium-bodied slow flow; little bit of residual viscosity... roasted malts leave a slight smoky warmth at the back of the palate... dry and smooth enough for slugging
O: before having this on draft (a tall glass, over 20 oz?!) at the brewery last night, I hadn't seen nor drank this since maybe the mid-aughts??; minor thrill to partake in it again... the draft version tasted slightly different (see below)
NOTES from draft pour last night: grape and toasted dark dried fruit?!... nutty, latently roasty aftertaste... herbal root beer undertones??... deliberate attempt to make this stand out against their 'Nator?... thin, slow, smooth-bodied... subtle chocolate chip cookie malt notes (2015)

Poured from a can into a pint glass. Pours reddish brown with a small light brown head. Smells of darker roasted grain with slight fruitiness. Tastes of dark roasted grain with fruitiness and nuttiness. Beer is light bodied and very easy drinking, good carbonation. Overall, a very good beer.

on tap at the brewery this afternoon.
clear dark brown with a reddish hue body. good off white head which persists throughout and leaves nice lacing.
not too much on the nose except malts
solid tasting English brown ale. good and malty, a little nutty, and none of that slight sourness you get from time to time.
medium on the mouth, slightly sweet and malty on the finish.
Another very good offering from Troegs, who show quality in their diversity of brews almost every time.
