On draught at the brewery this lunchtime.

Looks excellent in the glass. Black body, generous tan head with outstanding retention and lacing.

Decent aroma of chocolate and cocoa.

On tasting, the chocolate comes through good and strong. Fairly sweet, no roast at all. Very smooth.

Mouth between medium and full, finish smooth milk chocolate.

Overall, very nice chocolate stout, easy drinking, very smooth, sweet but not cloying, at least to this chocoholic's palate.

Pours a dark brown with a thick, mocha-colored foamy head that dissipated rather quickly. Aroma is faint coffee and chocolate. Taste is similar to the aroma, with more coffee than chocolate.

Overall, a good drinking beer.

Pours dark, dark, dark. Tan head, fell to a thin cap after a while. Smell is like hot cocoa, caramel. Taste is cocoa, raisins, vanilla, caramel. Gets bitter in the middle, but sweetness comes back in the finish. I expected a heavier mouthfeel given the look. It has almost a soda pop like feel with the carbonation. Overall, pretty good beer if you like sweeter stouts.

Pours dark and heavy. Cocoa aroma. Very thick chocolate body. Smooth and syrupy. A little too thick for my taste. Slight sweet finish. Definitely a desert beer.

(12 oz can, freshest by 02/26/2020; purchased cold in variety pack... poured into fat tulip)

L: dark, chocolate-brown liquid, good clarity; mocha-tan loose sponge foam cap... slow recede in suds, thin collar remains; little bit of webby lace

S: cola-like candy sugar note in the middle; piney, minty hop essence; subtle chocolate syrup note in the background... bit of brown bread, cookie-like roast character, but relatively mellow... overall smells of basic Amer. stout, with some sweet cocoa

T: cocoa leaps out front, more prominent than on the nose, with some lovely herbal hop and toasty roasted grain blasting out in the finish; lightly peppery-spicy, roasty-bitter aftertaste with merely a soft nibs-y accent... relatively dry, though some dark-toasted caramel slowly builds on the palate; hint of cigar smoke late in the aftertaste?

F: tight viscosity, medium-light bodied, oily texture; mild peppery heat lingering after each sip... soft fizz helps to counter dextrin sludge, lifting it along, rousing the palate with delicate stings

O: rather basic but solid, boldly-flavored American stout, colored with a smart degree of cocoa candy... a nice addition to the holiday pack, but may also do well as a winter sixer (1637)

DATE: December 21, 2019... OCCASION: watching the boys build gingerbread houses before the family's first Home Alone experience... GLASSWARE: Maudite snifter... as expected, this pours a jet black body that streams light brown bubbles upward into two-fingers' worth of thick, pillowy head... chocolate, toasted malts, vanilla, bitter and rich lactic energy, and a bit of brine... creamy, lactic and medium-bodied, drinkable and a bit of thinness at the throat... it cloaks its 7+% ABV quite well... the bitterness evokes coffee, while its milky smoothness is sweet and pleasing... sweetness stems from its chocolate as well, with buttery caramel and smokey malts rounding its profile nicely... this makes for a nice night cap and a dessert in itself...

Decanted from a 12 oz (355 ml) can into a custom taster pint; freshest by 02/26/2020Decanted from 16 oz (473 ml) can into a custom taster pint; canned November of 2018.
A: Pours black with a one finger, light brown head, mahogany highlights, a little more than rim retention, and solid rings of lacing.
S: Aromas of milk chocolate, toffee, banana, and pumpernickel.
T: Semisweet. Chocolate, more Cadbury than Nestle, with maybe a touch of the other aromatic components. Bitterness is light and allows the emergence of the sweetness and flavors.
M: Full bodied with moderate carbonation.
O: This is a fun dessert Stout. Reminded me of Young's Double Chocolate a bit.

Appearance:
Deep, dark brown like the color of coffee beans. Laces in a pleasing, khaki, delicate curtain. Thin, foamy head. Very attractive.

Bouquet:
Whoa! A bombastic barrage of chocolate! The aroma weaves promises of dark cocoa, toasted oats and barley, with a dapple of espresso here and there.

Feel:
High carbonation for a stout, so let it air. Very bubbly, almost abrasively so... Given enough time to breathe, the stout becomes lush and smooth as satin. Medium-bodied.

Taste:
Mild, bittersweet chocolate, roasted oats and coffee, malty barley. The vanilla is a mere afterthought, but a pleasant one! Given the aforementioned bouquet I expected more dominance from the chocolate... but its surprisingly weak.

Overall:
Albeit a bit unimaginative, this chocolate stout is fairly decent. But the chief component---the chocolate---is entirely mediocre. When a beer claims chocolate as it's primary selling point, I expect it to be pervasive when it hits the pallet.
