Enjoy this as a token of our appreciation. With the demise of Tröegs Oatmeal Stout, this long-forgotten recipe serves as an inspiration and a heartfelt thanks to our faithful stout fans. What’s special here? We start with a seductive malty sweetness, combine it with hints of chocolate and roasted flavors and round out the texture and taste with a healthy helping of oats. A three-hop blend brings perfect balance to the sweet malt adding a dry finish to this big beer.

a: Deep dark brown, not black. Pour leaves a half inch ligh tan head that lingers pretty well.

s: Faint alcohol hits the nose first. This becomes more noticeable as the beer warms. Malts and chocolate are also present with a bit of sugar. Subtle and complex.

t: Some chocolate, rough grains, and alcohol. Tastes blend very well making this difficult to decipher. Enigmatic.

m: Dry and thick. Leaves a nice bitterness at the back of the throat. Roasted malt flavor lingers long.

d: One impy stout a day is plenty, but I'll have a hard time ageing some of these as I intend to.

Pours a deep deep dark brown but not quite black with a pillowey two finger almond colored head that settles oh so slowly.Notes of dark fruit mixed in with lingering chocolate and a touch of roastiness but its not overbearing just melds well I even picked up a little iron.I have never picked up oatmeal flavors even in a oatmeal stout until this one its faint but its there with a bit of maple syrup quality and vanilla again the roastiness is there but just to compliment and not be the main flavoring,there is also a bit of raw nut and leafy hop in the finish.Wow a real gem its complex and different in its flavor components it is extraordinary and original in that way,I loved it thanks Rog down in G-boro.

Inky black with a firm and randomly bubbled head of foam that sits a half inch high and hangs out for a while. Curtains of lace with fringe hanging beneath rim the glass.

Low aroma of toasty malt and ripe plum.

The most assertively flavored oatmeat stout I've had, with big flavors of sharp molasses, burnt espresso, dark brown sugar, some tangy fruit, tannic wood, and a distinct ABV warmth. Seems a little over the top for an oatmeal, feels more like an imperial, but I'm enjoying every sip no matter what you want to call it.

Tremendous mouthfeel, full and creamy, a carbonated tingly finish, some powdery talc lingers.

Pretty drinkable, but it's a sipper at this level of strength. Thanks MuenchenerKindl for sending one my way.

Tröegs- Scratch 5

A- Hazy and murcky deep dark brown with a big thick creamy tan head. Thick lacing down the glass. A beautiful looking beer.
S- Sugary sweet molasses malt with a touch of chocolate. Not very strong on the nose.
T- Sweet molasses, corn syrup, brown sugar malt, semi sweet chocolate, and a solid flavor of oat bran.
M- Sweet and chocolatey at first followed by alc. heat, and finishing with a syrupy sweet malt kick.

Overall- At practically 10% alc you wouldn't know it, I would say 8%. An Imperial Oatmeal Stout?! Excellent sipper during the cold months.

Pours deep black with an off white/light tan head. lace is very good. Nose is of roasted malt and a little copper. Taste is quite good with a unique creaminess not found in a lot of oatmeal stout. The first part of the taste is the faintest hop kick, then malts dominate immediately. Roasted malts (could be stronger here) and that creamy flavor are through the middle and a slight hop bitterness with the tiniest coffee bean flavor on the finish. Aftertaste has (suprisingly) some hop flavors. Mouthfeel is outstanding here, as it is quite a bit thicker than the average oatmeal stout. Love the thickness, as it really brings out that creamy taste in the middle. Drinkability is good, but I will down grade the drinkability slightly as there is a little hop bitterness on the finish it could do without, and seems a bit dry. Defenitely a good one. I have heard that this mixes well with Nugget Nectar. Thanks again to Heath.

A strong ABV oatmeal stout that is mostly bitter, yet still secondary malted. Full mouthfeel black with modest white head. Some chocolate and coffee, Maybe not the best oatmeal stout I have tried, bit a good one. Contained roastiness. For the style, relatively easy drnking.Just as good 3 months later bottle.

Dark, without carbonation or movement aside from the initially pleasant head, and only the thinnest stretch of ruby expresses itself on the bottom.
A nice oat/milk/chocolate nose to lure you in.
I was not expecting this beer to be so big, as my mouth is somewhat scorched by alcohol. I feel like I just did a shot of whiskey with a beer back. This is tasty, but unfortunately the flavor is mostly lost by the brutal alcohol. That said, this might kick a lot of other milk/sweet stout ass in the coming months once this has time to mature properly.
Thin, but not too watery.

12oz single, i believe courtesy of no bs III , opened in the 3rd round of games on the 1st day of the tournament

appearance: pours into my go-to bells tulip, initial thought was "wait, isnt this a double imperial stout?", cola-esque body, a full bodied brown but nowhere near black...creamy tan foamy head with pretty decent retention

smell: rather sweet, bitter dark chocolate, oven roasted oats, big caramel n fruit twist to it...

taste: this one stretches the borders of a stout to me...boozy sweet core that dominates the flavor profile, bitter hops lie behind red and dark fruits, roasted oats, dark chocolate...alcohol is pretty pronounced, big caramel core

mouthfeel: creamy and full bodied, boozy hop bitterness

drinkability: somewhat inhibitive

Pours dark brown, but light in color for the style, with a little bit of tan foam sitting on top that fades to swirls.

Aroma is lots of sherry-like oxidation. Roast and chocolate as well.

Flavor is nice and chocolatey. Pretty subtle for an RIS. Some dark fruits and sherry-like oxidation. Like a toned-down, aged Kate the Great almost.

Medium-light bodied for the style, but very smooth. Low carbonation.

Very enjoyable aged imperial stout. Drinkable.

12oz bottle into a goblet.

Pours a deep, dark brown with about a finger width of tan foam. The head retains very well and leaves a ton of lace on the sides of the glass as it isswirled. Very nice. Aroma posesses deep notes of chocolate, roasted
malt, oats, some coffe, and a slight smell of alcohol.

Taste is thick with mostly notes of roasted chocolate malt, coffee, some oat flavors. There is nice balance between the sweet and roasted characters of this guy. Finishes with a burnt bitterness and a warming sense of alcohol. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a smooth, creamy carbonation. The nearly 10% is present but never detracts from the rest of the beer, instead adding some beef and warming nature to the body.

This is yet another successful Scratch offering from Troegs. Very well balanced and drinkable for such a beast of an Oatmeal Stout. I'm looking forward to seeing what a little more age does to these guys down the line.

12oz bottle courtesy of NFLMVP. Thanks Steve! Poured in an oversized tulip and split with my buddy Daive (Infestaxion).

A: Dark, muddy brown. Very little head. Not that impressive looking at all. Decent lacing.

S: Sweet malts, dark fruit, earthy hops, caramel, vanilla and some strong alcohol presence. Doesn't scream Oatmeal Stout at all. Hmmm...

T: Alcohol is surprisingly dominant. Almost Sherry like with lots of dark fruits, cherries, etc... Sweet malts and some very slight hints of chocolate and roastiness. A lot of the flavors seemed buried by alcohol. Once again, not even remotely like a traditional Oatmeal Stout.

M: Light bodied. A little syrupy. Not much carbonation at all.

D: The almost 10% ABV is in full effect here. I thought it would have calmed down with a few years of age on it. I found the 6oz I had to be plenty, this one is a sipper, whatever it is...

Very interesting beer. Other reviews seem to be all over the place with this one as well. Not sure what it was, but I'm pretty sure it's not an Oatmeal Stout Should probably be classified as a Strong Ale.

Ah the bottled version. The liquid seems darker, close to black yet the head is much smaller. The foam is creamier looking stands only one fat finger and leaves a nice lace.

The smell is stronger, Alcohol is present along with dark chocolate and espresso.

The taste is just great, So much so NFLMVP may no get as much as he wants. LOL. I'm loving the coffee notes dancing around with the chocolate flavors and the toasty malt. The hops seem more pronounced in the bottle as well.

The mouthfeel is noticeably better from the bottle in a thicker body, However the coating on the glass seemed thicker on tap.

All in all this is a tremendous brew and the people at Troegs would be making a huge mistake not doing this beer again every year.

Howabout it guys? Can you brew more? We'll keep drinking it! MK

Bottle from 2007; Pours black brown with a light khaki brown head.

Nose is all purple plums with hints of fruited coffee.

Mouthfeel is full and bold with an elegant carbonation and a nice balance.

Flavors are complex plum, sweet milk chocolate that turns to dark bitter chocolate with a coffee/espresso undertones. There is a hop quality to this beer that I normally would not like in a stout that just really works here and with this one. Creamy, malty, lightly sweet and complex makes this a nice stout to drink with food or sip with a whiskey or cigar.

Nice. And, a decent example that a 2007 brew in a small bottle may last nicely to May 2011 if and when stored decently. This one may even have some more time although sooner or later the creamy sweet character may be lost. However, not yet!

A growler filled fresh at the brewery on 11/23 and enjoyed on the same day.

A: The oatmeal stout is a dark red color, easily mistaken for black by a less keen eye. Carbonation is not a worry in this ale; it overflowed on two separate pours. That thick head produces gorgeous lacing throughout the entire glass.

S: The nose is a well-mixed blend of alcohol, chocolate malts, burnt toast and coffee. Quite a bit is going on here, making the anticipation of the sip quite strong.

T: Upfront warming alcohol is the first sensation to register. Behind that blur is a nice mixture of flavors, from roasted chocolate to burnt toast to sweet oatmeal to subtly acrid coffee. In short, this stout has it all. The maltiness is quite pleasing, incorporating the strenght of a double stout with the sweetness of oatmeal and coffee.

M: Man oh man this is good! The stout has so much going on that a mere growler is hardly sufficient to explore it. Luckily I've got another 20 bottles in the basement to work my way through.

D: The abv is a killer, making itself known from the first sip to the last. If you can get beyond that (and you should), the taste is divine. This beer is one of the best oatmeal stouts around. It'll be on tap a few more days at the brewery, so hightail it to Harrisburg and indulge in the sweetness of this beast.

An inch and a half of thick fluffy deep tan head forms and has nice retention. Leaves a bit of lace as it fades. Body is jet black and only shows hints of brown as it is held to light. Nose resembles more of a porter as it showcase's nutty mineral notes and a sweet murky carmel malt feel also. With first sip you get a zap of fruity bitter rich which shines with dark ripe friut. Fuzzy and raw bitter sweet malt covers the back of the tongue. Overall it is even and a pleasure to drink right now, but does show signs that it will develop well and age with grace only getting better. Chocolatey tones develop as it warms, this is pleasant. This brew really almost has hints that remind me of a barleywine. Solid drinkability.

The last couple Scratch beers Ive had let me down.Oh Oatmeal stout please dont let me down...

Pours a one finger tan head thats looks very nice.Almost all black,looks to be some red hints in the bottom of my chimay chalice.

I smell fruit notes.I also smell some slight oxidation.

Powdered chocolate,alcohol.I think I taste some roasted malt but I also think it could be the chocolate.Fruit also in the taste.Sourness,makes me pucker.

Very nice carbonation,silky feeling on my lips and tongue.The body could use a bit more.

The abv sticks out in this brew but its still very drinkable to say the least.I would have liked a bit more body but I still like it.

12oz received as a very cool extra in a trade with DIM... shared with my trading partner .. my share from my New Belgium snifter.

1" lite tan head drops fast .. no lacing. Color does not even come close to a stout ... dark chesnut brown with deep ruby highlites.

Aroma is brown malts with a light fruity yeastiness.

Flavor is big boned brown ale verging in English Barleywine territory.. sorta fruity yeasty component.. some mild dark fruits.. brown sugar and toffee... Alcohol is present but doesn't distract.

Medium mouthfeel with everpresent carbonation ... really not very smooth for an oatmeal "stout".

Despite the above negatives, this is very drinkable .. but I would be on my face after a few.

I really did not think "stout" at all with this one .. that said .. I am rating it based purely on its merits.

Another big thanks goes out to DIM .. Daniel is a top-notch trader.. highly recommended.

I'd been saving this for quite awhile. So with the announcement of the next Scratch series stout, I'll drink the previous one.

APPEARANCE: Pours into my Delirium tulip a strange, murky, dark brown, and certainly not black. A loose-bubbled, tab head forms on top and immediately falls to a large collar with some scattered patches of foam.

SMELL: The aroma isn't terribly intense. Some roastiness with a lot of cocoa and a slight nuttiness. That's about all I get even after letting it warm for awhile.

TASTE: Ah, there we go. An awesome malty sweetness hits you up front. It's incredibly silky and luxurious across the palate with a significant dose of coffee, caramel, and chocolate. The finish has a lot of that lingering sweetness but a balancing hop bitterness comes in and cuts through the sweet leaving you wanting another sip.

MOUTHFEEL: Smooth as silk as an oatmeal stout should be. The carbonation is medium and sharp, and that's right where I like it.

DRINKABILITY: Very nice. Any heat from the alcohol has dropped out considerably leaving a really smooth beer. Too bad this is the last one I have.

The Scratch series doesn't disappoint. I can't wait to pick up the new Scratch stout, Scratch #15.

12oz bottle poured into a Pint Glass

A - Poured a very nice deep caramel brown with a bit of translucence to it so that you could tell it had a somewhat hazy and cloudy appearance. A bit of sediment on the bottom of the glass, though not much. A nice two finger head of foamy light lace gathered on the top and gradually settled down into a thin film with more then adequate side glass lace.

S - The aroma was very interesting; there were hints of caramel and sweetness but also a ton of spice present in it as well. There was a good bit of nutmeg and even a touch of cinnamon that I was picking up in the aroma. A very nice overall smell, with slight hints of alcohol in the end.

T - The flavor was not that of an oatmeal porter or at least not any that I have ever had. It was thick with a deep spicy, and yeast dominated flavor, almost reminiscent of a Belgian Dark for some reason. There were some nice notes of caramel and a touch of nuttiness to it as well, however the spices that were upfront on this continued right into the finish and left a long lingering flavor. The slightest bit of sugar coated hoppiness could be picked up as it warmed and dragged out and there was a slight presence of alcohol that had not yet mixed all the way through.

M - Very smooth and creamy feel was punctuated by a sharp cutoff and adequate carbonation. Decent medium bodied ale this was very interesting, but kept its lively feeling well till the end.

D - This was a fine sipper. Not knowing the style going in I would have maybe thought this could be something to session but not after the first sip. This was quite a big beer and nothing to fool around with by gulping, needed to be savored and enjoyed.

Overall this was a bit of a mixed bag for me. I did not really feel it fit well within the style that it is labeled in. It had a lot more yeast qualities and spices and almost would make a good winter warmer. The flavors were robust and well defined with a smooth feel and a nice drinkability. I would not turn my nose up to having this one again; it seemed like something I would definitely want to have around.

Pours a light black with a 1/2 finger head that leaves touches of lacing. Considering the ABV and style, this really is a bit light in color.

Smells kind of fruity with dates and caramel/molasses sweetness. I am actually not very impressed with the nose here.

The taste is relatively sweet with that caramel/molasses sweetness coming through. The oats seem to provide a softening quality here. Some roastiness here, but I would like to see more chocolate and coffee. This is like a Belgian Strong Dark Ale crossed with an oatmeal stout. That's the best way I can describe it. Just doesn't quite work for me.

Mouthfeel has light to medium carbonation and is relatively soft on the tongue.

Drinkability is good - it sure doesn't taste like 9.9%.

I do give them credit for brewing a very unique imperial oatmeal stout, but I cannot score this extremely well as the overall experience is only decent.

a: One-finger khaki head, gradual retreat to a thin layer and ring. The beer is a deep brown in color.

s: Alongside bittersweet chocolate are big notes of earthy, dark pine hops. A light, lactic sweetness (likely from the oatmeal) gives a fullness to the aroma. Well rounded and quite nice, but a little towards the hoppy side of the spectrum and lacking the dark malt complexity I expect from the style.

m: Carbonation around or just under medium, pretty smooth. Body rides the medium-heavy line.

t: Immediately not as heavily sweet as I expected for a 9.9% beer. Full of roasty bittersweet chocolate with plenty of that oatmeal "starchy" flavor/feel. Big earthy hop flavors. Moderate bitterness accompanies light roast coffee, oatmeal, and bitter chocolate in the extended finish.

d: Very drinkable...abv superbly masked. The only limiting factor is the fact that, with a 6-pack in hand, I'd probably be through 4 before I realized what I'd done.

Appearance - Dark brown, not completely opaque but close to it. Not much head on this one, just a small ring.

Smell - Chocolate and strawberries come to mind immediately, with an underlying milky sweetness. Fruity and mild.

Taste & mouthfeel - Strong bitterness coming from both roasted malts and punchy hops. Notes of dark chocolate and roasted nuts. Medium-to-full mouthfeel with soft, mild carbonation. The finish leaves a burnt bitterness on the back of the tongue.

Pours a murky brown/red color, large frothy creamy head with some good lacing to back it up, good retention.

Smell is predominately malty with some funkiness/spiciness going on, can make out a whiff of alcohol.

Taste is also malty, the spiciness hits the mouth very quickly, followed by the creaminess of the beer, but in the aftertaste the alcohol becomes more noticeable. All things considered though, for a beer that's virtually 10%, it is well hidden.

a - pours a few shades lighter than black, huge dense cappuccino head with great retention and lacing, lots of bubbles continually rising to the top, lots of sediment on the bottom

s - definite oat presence on the nose, deeply roasted malt, dark chocolate, creaminess, kind of reserved on the nose

t - oats and dark maltiness up front, pretty sweet, the midpalate and finish have more bitterness along with some sweetness, dark chocolate, fairly creamy and smooth until the pronounced bitterness of the finish, not much alcohol, definitely would not guess that it's 9.9% abv

m - full-bodied with somewhat lower carbonation, quite creamy/velvety on the palate, the finish is somewhat bitter but pretty easy on the palate, some alcohol warming

d - drinkable for a big oatmeal stout, the alcohol is well masked, and the smoothness of the flavor and mouthfeel raise the drinkability, the alcohol will definitely catch up with you though

Overall, a very nice oatmeal stout. Quite subtle and well rounded on the palate. The aroma is a bit weak, but not too bad. Well worth trying if you can get your hands on a bottle.
