Tröegs Brewing Company
Pennsylvania, United States

Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.20%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
A slightly hazy IPA dry-hopped with Citra, Mosaic and El Dorado featuring notes of ripe grapefruit, mango, pear, and melon.

The path to Field Study began with our small-batch, experimental Scratch Series, the same starting point for our recent Double IPA LolliHop.

“Field Study began life as Scratch #327, when we first started tinkering with some new hopping techniques,” explains Tröegs brewmaster John Trogner. “We built on those experiments over the next few Scratch releases and landed on a grain bill featuring a backbone of local Rustic Pale Malt.” Rustic Pale is grown in Mount Joy, PA, about 15 miles from the brewery and malted by Double Eagle near Philadelphia.

With the malt bill in place, Trogner and his team focused on hop selection, fine-tuning the beer’s recipe. “After a few trials, we finally arrived at what we think is a winning combination for Field Study – Citra, Mosaic and El Dorado.”

Tons of ripe melon intermixed with with some spicy black pepper and husky malt. Tries to be a mix of old school / new school IPA, doesn’t quite get there but decent

A: The beer is clear yellow in color and has a moderate amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a short white head that left a large patch of bubbles on the surface and a collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light aromas of floral hops are present in the nose.
T: The taste follows the smell and has underlying notes of fruity yeast and hints of biscuity and cracker malts. No bitterness is perceptible.
M: It feels nearly medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation. There is more chewiness than there is crispness.
O: For an IPA, this beer isn't that hoppy and tastes more like an American Pale Ale.

Much to like at brewer, notably Nugget Nectar and Nimble Giant IPAs. Cant miss when in Hershey.
Great selection quality and people.
But this Fieldstudy is simple to the point of also ran.

A - Clear straw gold with a finger of white head w scant lace or last,
S - Pils profile malt, floral, pineapple, too much grapefruit.
T - More too much grapefruit, melon, floral, grape and herbal. Not much bitterness.
F- Prickly clean, easy, good summery clear brew.
O- Unmemorable.

Look: Clear, pale yellow with good carbonation and a thick, creamy, off-white head.
Smell: Strong pineapple and mango aromas. Pine, lemon. Great aromas from this beer.
Taste: Lemon citrus with some malt, mango, and melon sweetness. Slight hop bitterness at the end. On the whole, this is fairly crisp and dry, very much like a Brut IPA.
Feel: Thin, crisp, dry, and extremely refreshing.
Overall: Another great IPA from Troegs.

Pale, sunny yellow in color with a light haze that clarifies a bit as this warms. Poured with a tall, soapy, bright white foam with medium retention. Ripe pineapple and mellow sweet melon with notes of crackers and malt. Medium bodied with soft, medium light carbonation and a delicate creamy, silky smooth feel. Tropical fruit and pineapple flavors followed by medium hop bitterness. Fruity and melon flavors follow. Finished with tapering bitterness and fruity notes that fade into the sunset. Nice look and a fabulous feel. Hop flavors and aromas are delicate and mellow and are nicely balanced by medium light maltiness and fruity hop characters. A great new addition to the Troegs lineup.

Pours a pale, straw color. Decent carbonation with moderate head that dissipates quickly but leaves a light lacing.

Smell is pineapple and orange, very fresh and fruity. I actually preferred the smell to the taste.
Taste: light on the malt, which makes it nice and refreshing for summer - Again, citrus and pineapple... only after it started to warm up did I notice an aftertaste of melon.
Feel: moderate carbonation

Nothing spectacular, but not bad either. I'm not a fan of wheat beers, and I'm finding the wheat in an IPA not to be my favorite combo. Choice of hops is nice... not too overwhelming, but distinct and noticeable... for me, the hop aromas were what stood out the most in both smell and taste.

On tap.

A - Gold color with nice clarity and sticky white lacing.

S - Very aromatic and juicy citrus on the nose with red grapefruit and pear.

T - Nice fruit rind spiciness, melon, mango, and ends with some lingering mango juiciness and a citrus bitterness that lingers.

M - Big medium body with lots of prickly carbonation giving way to a soft finish.

O - Troegs has a winner here.

This looks very light straw colored with a decent white head. Although the bottle lists this beer as “hazy golden”, mine is straw and see through. The nose on this one gives me the impression of a juicy NE style brew; very pineapple, peach and melon forward with a citrus back...good nose. Oh man, nice flavor but I was expecting a punch and got a glancing jab, its watery dank if that makes sense. Also more carbonation than you would normally find which I actually like and a decent abv level for this “summer” IPA I guess. In summary, nice nose.

Pours a relatively clear light yellow with a nose dominated by citra hops. Kind of juicy in flavor but nothing really stands out to me in terms of the overall taste. It doesn't know if it wants to be more of a light hoppy ale or more of a juicy IPA, but fails on both accounts. Certainly not offensive but I don't feel any overwhelming desire to revisit it. Not up to par with other Troegs I've tried.
