A slightly hazy IPA dry-hopped with Citra, Mosaic and El Dorado featuring notes of ripe grapefruit, mango, pear, and melon.
The path to Field Study began with our small-batch, experimental Scratch Series, the same starting point for our recent Double IPA LolliHop.
“Field Study began life as Scratch #327, when we first started tinkering with some new hopping techniques,” explains Tröegs brewmaster John Trogner. “We built on those experiments over the next few Scratch releases and landed on a grain bill featuring a backbone of local Rustic Pale Malt.” Rustic Pale is grown in Mount Joy, PA, about 15 miles from the brewery and malted by Double Eagle near Philadelphia.
With the malt bill in place, Trogner and his team focused on hop selection, fine-tuning the beer’s recipe. “After a few trials, we finally arrived at what we think is a winning combination for Field Study – Citra, Mosaic and El Dorado.”

Great new addition to Troegs Hop Cycle series and a near perfect summer IPA. Very light bodied, but not watery like session IPA's. Nice combination of hops that provide lots of citrusy flavors, but very little bitterness. Finishes dry. Kudos to Troegs, this one is a winner.

Lightly hazed, pale gold body sporting a large white head and good lacing. Citrus focused aroma with a glance in the direction of some melon. Flavors of tropical fruit and stone fruit meld with the citrus. Notes of pine in the aftertaste. Bitterness is modest. Nicely carbonated, medium bodied mouthfeel.

It's a legit highly drinkable beer for its style. My only issue with it is, for its highly drinkable character, there's just a bit too much ABV. Have to match that aspect up. Probably well 'field-studied' but NOT well enough thought out.

Poured from a can into a pint glass
Appearance – The beer pours a clear golden-straw color with a small head of puffy white foam. The head has a good level of retention, fading over time and leaving a light level of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma is strong of a grapefruit citrus an orange and grapefruit rind smell, mixed with some lemon and a bit of cracker malt. Along with these aromas comes some other hop smells of a light herbal and floral aroma and a bit of tropical fruit smells of pineapple and papaya.
Taste – The taste begins with a crisp cracker malt flavor that has notes of tangerine and tropical fruit sweetness. There is a moderate grapefruit and herbal hop flavor upfront, which grows slightly stronger as the taste advances forward. At the same time hints of grain and caramel grow in, while some of the fruitier flavors fade. Light floral hop and some lemon come more toward the end, leaving one with a nice crisp taste to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is moderate to slightly thinner with a higher carbonation level. Very nice for the mix of citrus and cracker malt, as well as the lighter crisp tastes, creating a nice easy refreshing and flavorful sipper.
Overall - Very west coast style in nature with a nice crisp taste and feel.

I like the hop mix, one of them imparts an earthy element. But it's not as robust as other IPAs I've loved.

They were pouring it on tap all weekend @Delfest and it was the fantastic. Love the Rustic Pale Malt, very nice backbone, smelled delicious, couldn't tell ya how it looked as every pint ended up in an the Cleen Canteen DelFest stainless glasses. Hoppy but not too hoppy, carb was right on, easy to sip right through the pint. Superb job, Troegs.

12oz can served in a tulip glass. Date stamp on bottom: 18:25 220408-806. Freshest by 08/12/2022.
Appearance: Golden yellow, with a bit of haze. Thin white persistent head with persistent strands of lacing.
Smell: Grapefruit, orange, mango, and something else. Peach? Melon? Not sure.
Taste: Citrus up front with some mango, then light malt for balance (a bit cracker-like, just barely there), and then sharply bitter finish with some grapefruit / citrus bitterness.
Mouthfeel: Good carbonation, just right thickness, a bit sticky on the teeth, dry finish.
Overall / Drinkability: I think I would describe this as delicately hoppy. Hops certainly dominate the flavor, but they're not very strong, and you can pick out distinct flavors - other than the one I couldn't pick out in the smell. A sipping and savoring beer, but I'm finding just one is enough. It's somehow a bit less than the sum of its parts at the end.

Pours a clear gold. Thin foam. Sweet lemon aroma. Citrus hop body. Lightly sweet. Finishes slightly bitter. Easy drinking. I'd study this any day
