Thin and bubbly tan froth atop a dark brown brew. Fresh-baked brown bread, cherry, plum and pine to the nose. The taste brings to mind melted caramel dripping off a spoon and mixed with brown bread, brown sugar, mincemeat and currants with a finely tuned resinous hop ending for good measure. Medium side of heavy and smooth all the way down with a creamy core and drier than expected finish.

Top tier.

2011 batch that came as an extra in a trade.

A- Pours a very deep and murky brown that is almost a solid mahogany in color. A small and tan colored head forms and retains very well with a good amount of lacing. It almost looks like a carbonated brandy in the glass.

S- Huge candied dark fruits hit the nose in an aggressive fashion right off the bat. Right after the dark fruits, the booze and dark malts assault the nose next. What hops there might have been are very subtle or removed, probably due to the age of the bottle. The end of the scent has a mostly sweet, but slightly balanced with a touch of bitterness.

T- Starts off with dark and bitter malts right up front. A small amount of the dark fruit flavor from the scent translates into the taste. In the middle of the drink, boozy bitterness is the primary flavor that almost displays a nutty, almond-like aspect. The lingering flavor on the tongue is of black licorice and bitter hops and malts.

M- This beer is surprisingly well carbonated for its age. Outside of the carbonation, it is a very smooth, but boozy and warming beer.

Overall, I think this beer is a little past its prime, but it has held up surprisingly well for its age. The pour, the scent, and even the taste has held up very well after 4 years in the bottle. While this isn't my favorite barleywine, it isn't bad.
