Also known as Scratch #20...

First and foremost, this rating is based on how this one is drinking right now, not in the past.

Another old Scratch Beer ticked off the list. Yet again, big thanks to Deuane for giving me one of these to try.

A - Pours murky burnt orange with a decent one finger tall white head, dissipating down to a thin film, leaving very light lace down the glass.

S - Smells of intense caramel, toffee and brown sugar sweetness throughout. Some hints of faded citric hops and fruit creep in at times but this one is all sweetness now. A surprising amount of alcohol is still present.

T - Starts off with a ton of sweetness - flavors are similar to the nose - slowly giving way to hints of toasted bread, some minerals and the faintest hints of hop bitterness. Finish retains quite a bit of sweetness and the booze creeps in at the end of each sip, lingering on the pallet long after the finish. Those hops are long gone in this one.

M - Medium body with lots of sweet flavors and moderate carbonation. The booze is still surprisingly strong for being almost three years old.

O - This one is obviously past its prime but it isn't undrinkable. Glad I got to try it but if you have one of these sitting around it isn't getting any better, drink it sooner rather than later.

Also known as Scratch Beer 20 - 2009.

A: The ale is a caramel color that looks amber brown. Sunset orange hues sneak through when a bright light is on the other side of the glass. White head lingered atop the beer for a few minutes and had no opportunity to lace.

S: The ale puts off one hell of an aroma. Very spicy with a resiny pine presence. Pepper is in strong supply, along with thick oily needles. A very impressive nose.

T: The ale is advertised as lacking maltiness. Kinda true but not quite. The ale is very well-balanced, allowing darker caramel malts to stand up to Apollo hops. The pine flavors seemingly clump together, amplifying their strength. Pepper heat remains in strong supply and citrusy flavors add a sweetness that differs from the pine. The finish is a dull bitterness that allows cereal grains to come through.

M: The hoppiness, with bitterness and spices, is really powerful. The fuller malts have a sweeter flavor that ably supports the hops. The best hop-centric Scratch offering to date!

D: I originally had a sampler before upgrading to a glass. I also carried out a case and a growler. I'm looking forward to sipping on a few more of these.

On tap at Drafting Room - Springhouse, PA

Arrived at the bar in a 10oz tulip.

A: Golden amber, fairly clear with a nice bright white head. Good retention and lacing throughout.

S: My first experience with Apollo hops and.... damn what a nose! Very strong citrus complemented by very pungent earthy/weedy goodness. Loving this nose. Smells like a good undertone of biscuity malt as well as some perfume.

T: I'm loving Apollo hops! Really good hoppy brew, again the citrus notes dominant, but there is that funky floral hop notes that scream good weed. Very tasty. Big malt bill to smooth everything out and complements the bittering at the finish.

M: Medium light, more resinous than creamy, but still slippery smooth.

D: Damn, don't know why I didn't realize this is a IIPA. I mean, it is a hop bomb, but that big malt back bone and the easy drinkability of this one threw me for a loop.

Troegs continues to impress.

On tap at the drafting room July 4th weekend.

A: Very nice looking deep copper color. A touch of haze in there as well. Had a finger of white head on it when it arrived and had nice retention. The lacing was nothing short of impressive.

S: Really nice citrus hop nose. I was looking to compare it to nugget nectar but the comparison was just not there. Quite a bit of malt in there as well. A touch spicy towards the back.

T: The hops were super bright. Quite a bit of grapefruit came through. You also got some biscuit malt in there as well. The finish was a touch bitter but lasted forever and was really enjoyable.

M: Fairly light for a DIPA. Very refreshing.

D: Paired really well with my buffalo philly cheesesteak. Had two pints of this and could have gone for a third. Really great beer.
