Tröegs Java Head StoutTröegs Java Head Stout

Brewed by:
Tröegs Brewing Company
Pennsylvania, United States

Style: Oatmeal Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.50%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
JavaHead is like a day at Tröegs; it’s hard to tell where the coffee ends and the beer begins. This creamy oatmeal stout is infused with locally roasted, cold steeped coffee through our HopBack vessel, releasing subtle hints of cocoa, roasted nuts and dark mocha.

I poured this from a 12 ounce bottle into a mug. It is a dark black with a thick tan head. It looks quite impressive.

The smell is decent, but a little weaker than I was expecting.

The taste is good though. It has a nice combination of malty chocolate and coffee tastes. There is just a hint of hops.

The mouthfeel is good also. It is very drinkable. Even my wife liked this one.

Looks great with a nice head. has a nice thick feel of a good quality stout however it was too bitter considering the coffee flavor and aroma was missing or just overpowered by the hops. I would never turn one down however it would not be a beer I will return to on my own accord.

12oz. bottle dated 05/29/16

Pours dark maroon, almost black with a creamy frothy khaki colored foam head. Smells like roasted malts, dark chocolate, oats, vanilla, dark coffee, caramel, charred brown sugar, nutty molasses, mild dark fruits, with herbal earthy grass and woody pine. Tastes like roasted malts, bitter dark chocolate, oats, dark coffee, some dark fruits, dark caramel, nutty molasses, charred brown sugar, with herbal earthy grass and woody pine. Feels medium-light bodied, slick and creamy with moderate low carbonation. Overall a nice coffee oatmeal stout.

L: Pours near black with tinges of dark brown around the edges. Ample creamy head with very good head retention.

S: Musky, chocolaty coffee with some caramel malt. Some dry oxidized notes with some mild grassy hops.

T: Black coffee with some bittersweet chocolate and very minor caramel. Far drier than most stouts of this strength and style, with some bread crust-like malt.

F: Medium-body, slightly silky mouthfeel with very moderate carbonation.

Thoughts: Halfway decent coffee stout. It would probably be better with some brighter coffee flavors and a touch more malt, but it's pretty decent as is.

Review from BeerAdvocate Magazine Issue #34 (Nov 2009):

Oats and coffee--breakfast beer?

Menacing darkness, though with a very inviting head on top. Ripe strawberry, fruity aroma clashes with fresh-ground coffee and some burnt grain. Modest level of carbonation provides ample smoothness; medium bodied. Chocolate and burnt sugar from the malt pair up nicely with the coffee influence. Juicy in the middle, and the hop bitterness comes in with a semi-harsh sting. Ghostlike, smoky char character from the malt in the drying finish.

Coffee flavors don't come to full fruition as the hops and roasted malt mute most of the coffee out. A decent Stout regardless.

Pours into my glass a nice deep black with a two finger head of creamy tan foam on top. Spotty lacing as it falls. Aromas is surprisingly hoppy upfront. Citric and floral along with a smooth roast from the malt. Caramel, chocolate and a good coffee aroma as well that is more in the background than I would have expected. Bit of creaminess as well.

First sip brings smooth, lightly roasted dark malts upfront with a mix of caramel, chocolate and oats. Hops move in with green herbal citrus and a light floral flavor as well. Brewed coffee is there, but again it is more a background accent. Finishes off with oatmeal smoothness, a bit of bitterness and lingering hops and roast.

Mouthfeel is creamy and smooth with good carbonation. Malt body is solid without being too heavy, making this one quite easy to put away. Overall, this ends up being more a hopped up oatmeal stout to me than a coffee oatmeal stout. I would have liked a stronger more vibrant coffee presence for a brew named Java Head....maybe Hop Java Head??

Pours an oil slick black with a thick mocha head. Love to see the head coloring with any high ABV coffee/chocolate stout. Ample lacing, disapaiting head to islands of co2.

I didnt believe the citrus hop aroma until I read it on the bottle. Sticky IPA hops, very strange for a stout. Im worried. Not much coffee/choclate, maybe some flake oat. Little ABV ... and to be honest, still getting co2. Wanted to give a 3.5 here, but the smell matches what they are trying to do so I cant fault them too much.

Creamy, medium roasted malt. Little citrus, dry roasted nut, biscuit. Missing any sort of coffee/espresso, maybe its coming out in the nut flavor.

Smooth. Sits really well, ABV is about perfect. Love the oatmeal creaminess. Quite a dry finish.

The citrus is very well balanced. I was really worried with the smell, but its balanace for the beer is great. Pretty amazing brew if you look at all the components that contribyte to its flavor. I can appreciate how folks wont like this interpretation of the style, but on the grounds for what they were shooting for, they have hit the mark.

On tap, served in an imperial pint glass that was chilled.
Dark brown, almost black in color. Cocoa colored head. A little bit of lace.
Roasted malt aroma, a little bit of coffee and a little bit of chocolate.
Pronounced espresso taste, some chocolate.
Very nice.
