Notes / Commercial Description:
JavaHead is like a day at Tröegs; it’s hard to tell where the coffee ends and the beer begins. This creamy oatmeal stout is infused with locally roasted, cold steeped coffee through our HopBack vessel, releasing subtle hints of cocoa, roasted nuts and dark mocha.

Needs some tweaking but is a decent offering from Troegs.

The nose highlights one of the main flaws with the beer, as the malt just seems off. There is a coffee aroma but it blends in with bitter chocolate and strong malt notes. Instead of being a rich and roasted character, the malt profile almost smells like an IPA that has gone well beyond it's shelf life; a bit flat, sour and bready which hangs over everything else.

The taste follows the nose almost exactly, but with much more coffee. This is definitely a coffee beer but that isn't it's singular flavor or defining feature. The malt tastes like it smells, and I still believe it isn't right for a stout. A scotch or brown ale might be better suited to the taste of the malt, but it doesn't ruin the beer.

The mouthfeel of this beer is decent but nothing special. Doesn't pull off a creamy mocha or even a bitter black coffee vibe that a lot of people like in their coffee stouts, but offers something a bit more dry and bready.

Overall, none of the flaws are deal breakers but there are many things that can be improved on. For the price I wouldn't say stay away, but I also wouldn't say it's a must buy when you see it in your local shops.

From a growler via Jungle Jim's. This nice little stout pours a rich opaque with a
nice head of light tan foam that settles to a thick ring, thin pool, and features
very nice lacing. Nose of chocolate, coffee, char, and sweet malts with a touch
of dark molasses. Flavors lightly exceed the nose with char and chocolate vying
for dominance over mellow strong coffee and herbal hops that have a touch of
cream and molasses (black strap) on the back. Excellent mouth feel; medium
full body fades to a light creaminess with medium carbonation and a bitter
malt, char, and hop finish.

Overall this is a solid offering from a great brewer.

This coffee heavy sought is like a cold mocha in a bottle. It puts blackish-brown with a slight beige head and a apparant carbonation in the body. Smells of mild coffee, chocolate, and roasted malt. Tastes of weaker than expected coffee and roasted malt with some nuttiness and quite a bit of chocolate in the end. Medium-full body that finishes bitter like dark chocolate meets coffee.

Served in a pint glass from the bottle.

Appearance: Thin super dark brown with heavy bubbles to the body. Head rose to maybe one finger's length dropping quick with easy lacing but still sticky.

Smell: Light mocha scent, and believe it or not like a spoon full of fresh coffee. Comes off what bland but still super attending scent.

Taste: Bitter coffee, malts are pretty heavy with smooth bitterness. I love the Chocolate finish at the end...like a bitter nutella.

Mouth: Medium to heavy carbonation and average stickiness.

Overall: Good brew, definitely one of those diamonds in the rough which took me a bit by surprise. Hopefully you like it as much as me, Salud!

Slight heavy Coffee, slight hop bitterness, slight malt to balance the coffee taste.

Thanks to FriedSlug for this trade!

A dark ominous pour forming a 1/2 finger of beige bubbly head.

Aroma of peppery black coffee bean covered in chocolate. Some basic caramel, crystal, and cocoa malts are also detected.

Strong coffee flavor with suggestions of chocolate, some stale oats, slight cocoa. Stale milk, peppers.

Feel is creamy, very watery, semi-carbonated, and a dry coffee roasty finish.

Overall, pretty underwhelming. I was hoping for more but alas this did not meet my expectations. Won't return to.
