Very Good
OktoberfestOktoberfest
Notes: Tröegs Oktoberfest is here! Our take on this timeless German style starts with a traditional brewing technique called decoction, creating a bright, dry maltiness. A kettle addition of Hallertau Tradition hops adds subtle floral and herbal undercurrents to this toasty sweet Fest Lager.

Poured into a clear pint glass. The beer was a coppery-orange with a near white head.
The smell was definitely an Oktoberfest beer smell.
The taste was great.
Definitely a really nice Oktoberfest beer.

12 ounce bottle, freshest by 11/26/22 stamped on the label. Thanks to Brutaltruth for this brew! Served in a dimpled mug, the beer pours a clear orange/amber color with not quite an inch off-white head. Head retention and lacing are both decent enough. The brew smells like bready malt and floral/grassy hops. Taste is similar to the aroma, but with the addition of grainy/sweet malt, apple and some caramel flavors. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's coating and easy to drink with a moderate amount of carbonation. I liked this brew, certainly worth trying if you get the chance to!

Glassware: 0.5 L Festmug
Temp at Pour: 50.4

Look:
Nice medium and clear copper. Initial 2-finger off white head appears creamy and dissipates very slowly to a thickness of a single finger.

Smell:
Nice toasted bread notes along with earthy grains and hints of toffee and a touch of caramel. The noble hops provide notes of grass with a touch of fresh hay and some light floral notes as well.

Taste:
Sweet bready malts and toasted toffee/caramel start things off and are quickly met by the grassy hops that provide a very mild spice and balance the sip out. Some note of pumpernickel or rye float around in the background with a faint nuttiness. The sip finishes dry, a tad toasty, and mildly spicy. The flavors might be toned down compared to some other Märzens but they are impeccably balanced. The high ABV (for the style) is not noticeable.

Feel:
Clean and smooth. Almost creamy. Body is medium-light.

Overall:
I was looking forward to trying this and am glad that I did. Troegs did not disappoint. This is a nice, very easy-drinking amber Märzen. It is going down very quickly. Is it as good as the German staples (Paulaner, HP, Ayinger, Spaten)? Nope. But it is quite good regardless. This will become part of my annual Oktoberfest rotation. I am glad that I picked up a six pack (so far). I'll be going back for more.

The use of Pilsner and Munich malts w/o any Caramel malt was an interesting choice. I think that it works. The lack of Caramel malt is likely what contributes to the toned down flavors (esp malts and toastiness) but it does make the beer more quaffable and lets the dryness come through more distinctly.

12 ounce bottle poured into a dimpled mug.
Freshest by 11/30/22

Very clear copper pour with a decent off-white cap. Moderate strength malty nose, bread and honey mostly. Flavor wise, it’s toasty and somewhat spicy but more herbal, some caramel, only mildly sweet with like bitterness. It strikes an overall balance right through to the finish. Aftertaste is earthy /woody. Mouthfeel is medium weight and a little slick but not creamy.
I could certainly drink more than one of these and believe it’s better than the average American example.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle, dated "freshest by" 12/03/22, into the test mug
A - Beauiful clarity, in the copper colored background. An aggressive pour yielded a pillowy white cap.
The cap slowly dissipated to ring after ring clinging to the glass.
S - Hints of caramel, a grassy noble hop, earthy grains
T - Toasty grains, again hint of caramel, not to sweet.
M - Clean, dry, beautiful grain expression without being overbearing
O - Its as if they best of a tradional festbier , mashed up with a light marzen, just on the line between the two.
Excellent texture, lovely attenuation feeds that near perfect dry finish.

Appearance - golden bronze body with white head

Smell - toffee, caramel

Taste - toasted toffee, caramel, brown bread

Mouthfeel - slight toffee/caramel, pumpernickel bread, some kind of an odd rye spice effect going on at the end

Overall - Pretty nice take on the marzen style, not too sweet nor too hoppy. Worth a shot

Price Point - $2.29/12 oz single

Full disclosure, I poured a 12 oz bottle into a liter stein, so my notes may be off. Troegs' Oktoberfest entry pours a transparent amber with a white head. The nose is of no surprise, malt. I was disappointed with how light the flavor was. The body is smooth and inoffensive. Again, I'm thinking the pour may have something to do with my results.

Poured from the bottle into a Libbey style pilsner glass.

Beautiful looking festbier, with light visible carbonation and a khaki to orange mixed colored head which is superfine. Body color is a golden amber, nearly orange bronze mix which is shiny and glimmering. Very good looking brew.

Quite a neat aroma. Clean sensing but a distinct emphasis on malt that goes with a mix of caramel and distinct milk chocolate as well. Light touches of herbal hop and even a bit of nutty sensations too. Very nice.

Palate fits real nicely. Milky sensations of cream and caramel, with a toasty aroma and hops to match. Light herbal presence not just in the finish but in the mid palate too for excellent malt contrasts. Creamed caramel and milk chocolate seem to be even more pronounced as well, with a robust mouthfeel. Superior clean finish, and even manages to stay dry.

Great brew.

The pour is copper colored with a fair amount of carbonation. The taste is caramel, roasted pine nuts, & a soft earthy herbal note. If I never heard of Troegs brewing I would have could have easily confused this with a Wartsteiner or Hacker Pschorr Oktoberfest beer. Cheers! B

12oz bottle into a pint mug. New release, dating too difficult for these old eyes.

Looks splendid in the glass. Crystal clear amber body with a decent white head. Only a little lacing.

Caramel malty aroma.

On tasting, clean, sweet, malty, no aftertaste. Could drink these all night long. Hop an afterthought here.

Mouth medium, finish a crisp clean sweet wash.

Overall, it's a well made product. Hope Troegs makes it an annual release.

(12 oz bottle, freshest by 120122; purchased single off shelf at Total Wine... poured into a 14 oz mug)

L: polished-clear, tawny-amber liquid; finger-high foam build on pour, collapsing into thin cap... only a thin, crescent collar remains; very little lace

S: lightly-sulfured, herbaceous pretzel crust; a malt aroma rich in depth and dimension; grainy up top, doughy below... nutty and apple-y highlights... slight accent of noble hops; little alcohol presence, just an overtone

T: doughy, moderately-toasty foundation, big and round malts unfloding with each sip... grassy bitter top note in the aftertaste, accompanied by some salty pretzel crust at the back and sides... lingering chewy bread crust essence... missing a small amount of lasting depth or nuance

F: near plush in its texture, mildly inflated core; little latent carbonation... I did drink this relatively 'warm', so maybe it gassed off too much... the alcohol and hops team to stoke a mild heat at the back of the palate... despite its faintly flabby feel, it drinks really darn quick with a soft touch of residual malt sludge

O: they did not disappoint with this; it's pretty much how I wished a few of the other 'big-name' local breweries would've made their O'Fest... worthy of purchase in bulk (2012)

Poured into a wide mouth shaped glass: color is copper, transparent, slight head appears with an off white color then dissipates to a thin ring on the glass sides.

Smell is munich, vienna malt, toast, bread, light fruitiness, pleasant hoppy crispness.

Taste is on the maltier side for style but really well done: notable German malt, toast, bread, slight fruitiness, hoppy crispness to finish.

Mouthfeel is crisp carbonation, moderate sweetness, lower bitterness, lingering crisp sweetness.

Overall a really well done Marzen/Oktoberfest style - sweet malt, moderate crispness/hoppiness.

This Marzen is also really good but fairly typical and not mind-blowing. It's just a really good well executed. I am liking Troegs overall a lot more as a whole though.

Better than I was expecting.
I was expecting this to be overly hoppy for the style as most Tröegs beers are, but I would say they cut off just at the right time. Any more and it would ruin the beer.
Pours the usual color with the usual Märzen flavor, albeit on the higher side of the hop schedule.
Overall, better than I expected but not as good as the German staples.
I'd get it again, but there are others I enjoy more.
Worth a try.
